Is this just a another shit example of the selfish society? Could the bus driver or one of the other passengers not just given her the 20p she needed for her fare?

Oh balls titsalana.

So if I saw someone who was a bit tipsy walking home and being followed by a couple of scary looking men, there's no point in talking to her and checking she is OK and generally seeing everything is OK?

I have done that and stayed with the girl until the scary fuckers had gone. Obviously I shouldn't have bothered doing that as leaving it and then if they raped her it would only have been their fault.

None of you ever heard of the story of the good samaritan? Of basic human decency? Of looking out for others?

What a bunch of bastards you are. And I don't care if this gets deleted I am horrified by some of the attitudes on here.

SardineQueen · 08/06/2012 12:21

I can't believe that the "rape is the fault of the rapist don't blame the victim" idea is being used here to defend people who turned their backs on someone in need with absolutely dire consequences.

It's just unreal and it'a making me really angry.

AnyFucker · 08/06/2012 12:23

I think the problem here is that people are taking the mantra "only the rapist is at fault for raping someone" (which is completely true and correct, of course) at completely face value and forgetting the human aspect of this

a young girl, 20p short of her fare

what happened to her because she wasn't allowed to get on that bus is not the driver's and passengers fault, but they are guilty of turning a blind eye to her distress, for the sake of 20p

I don't want to live in a society like that, frankly

AnyFucker · 08/06/2012 12:25

I don't want to read the link (will find it makes me far too ragey, watching it on This Morning was bad enough) but how old was the girl ?

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 08/06/2012 12:25

sardine no ones defending them but when people are not mentioning the rapist and blaming the passenger and bus driver it is fucking wrong!

As a victim of this my self I'm angry as it is the rapists fault! Fair enough the driver should have let her off with the 20p but he didn't but that doesn't mean its his fault! He didn't send her off to be raped!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 08/06/2012 12:27

No, of course I'm not saying that human kindness shouldn't happen Hmm
what I am saying is that the fact we live in a world where a woman can't safely walk home alone is the problem here and it was the rapist that attacked her, everyone should feel safe to walk anywhere regardless of sex.

I would have given anyone 20p at anytime day or night to save a long walk, of course I would, and yes I think the people on the bus were awful not to have given it her if they had it, but it doesn't make it their fault that this man decided to prey on a young, vulnerable woman.

UnChartered · 08/06/2012 12:27

i answered the way i did because of the way the thread is titled...

but i agree, we're on a hiding to fuck all if no-one will stump up 20p

FamiliesShareGerms · 08/06/2012 12:28

THis is being discussed on Radio 2 now.

20p FFS. A driver and 30 people on that bus were happy for a young woman to be left alone without another bus for hours, because they wouldn't stump up or waive 20p.

Of course it's the rapist's fault that she was raped, and it should be safe to walk around alone in the middle of the night, but it's not safe and someone should have helped her.

claig · 08/06/2012 12:28

I think bus companies need to train drivers to allow people on without the full fare late at night if the case looks genuine and they are alone etc. Proof of identification is not always possible. Most people will pay, I don't think the system will be widely abused by people trying to get on for free, and if the company needs to cover the lost revenue, they should charge everyone 1p extra during the day.

SardineQueen · 08/06/2012 12:28

SPs the bus driver who ditched me in the middle of nowhere in the pissing rain when I was 18 was clearly half-hoping that something would happen.

How do you know what the bus driver was thinking.

FanjoForHerMajesty · 08/06/2012 12:29

AF- she was 22, apparently

CarrotsAreNotTheOnlyVegetables · 08/06/2012 12:29

The bus company really makes me angry. Kicking someone off the bus in a dangerous situation is unforgivable.

A bit off subject, but years back my brother, who was 10 at the time, was kicked off the bus in the middle of a lonely moor because he only had the money for half fare and the conductor didn't believe he was under 16 as he was very tall. He didn't give a toss about how a child was supposed to get home from the middle of nowhere (not a house in sight). And not one passenger gave a monkeys either.

Luckily he found a public phone and got my Dad to pick him up. Otherwise he would have been forced to hitch a lift home.

My parents were furious and complained to the bus company but they didn't care. Said my DB should have carried his passport to prove his age! Angry.
Err, he's 10 and has never left the country so doesn't have a pssport...Hmm

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 08/06/2012 12:29

AF it doesn't state her age but says she was out celebrating in town so I'm assuming over 18

FanjoForHerMajesty · 08/06/2012 12:29

BTW I also would have given her it during day too, of course you would

SardineQueen · 08/06/2012 12:29

carrots you get that sort of story on MN quite a bit.

AnyFucker · 08/06/2012 12:30

that poor girl, Fanjo Sad

FanjoForHerMajesty · 08/06/2012 12:30

I have come across a few bus drivers in my time who actively seem to dislike passengers and go out of their way to make things more difficult for them, without a doubt.

OddBoots · 08/06/2012 12:33

It's easier for us to relate to people on a bus than it is to relate to a rapist - rape is so far off the scale that it is so much harder to have the thought in our heads. It feels like it goes without saying that we would not rape someone but to know there are normal people (the plural is important) on a bus who would not give a young girl 20p to get the bus feels like an image of a selfish society.

Two wrong things happened that night, the money for the bus and the rape and I think everyone on this thread would condemn both.

tittytittyhanghang · 08/06/2012 12:35

It goes without saying that the rapist was responsible for the rape. But that doesn't excuse the frankly appalling behaviour of the driver and the other passengers. They are just as bad imo, in that they were in a position to help and turned their backs.

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 08/06/2012 12:35

sardine so the bus driver and passengers didn't help on the hope that she will be attacked? Hmm I very much doubt that. Bus drivers are wankers but its the rapists fault. If it wasn't her it would have been someone else

Meglet · 08/06/2012 12:37

I would have given her the money Sad.

I gave a teenage girl a lift home once when I saw her waiting at a bus stop, after dark and being hassled by some boys.

SoupDragon · 08/06/2012 12:38

If you are going to blame the driver and passengers you also need to blame the victim for not ensuring she had her bus fare.

Which i am sure you are not going to do (quite rightly).

The rapist would have attacked and raped someone as he is clearly that kind of person. He has now been found guilty.

CarrotsAreNotTheOnlyVegetables · 08/06/2012 12:39

Bus drivers would not behave like that if their bosses cared enough about the safety of their passengers to change their stupid rules and discipline the drivers.

It's so sad to hear stories like this where people come to harm because people just don't care about those around them. Doesn't excuse the actions of the rapist, but wouldn't the world be so much better if we all just looked out for others a bit more?

SardineQueen · 08/06/2012 12:39

SPs how do you know what the bus driver was thinking? Honestly how can you know? He could have let her on and he chose not to. He could have let her go to the cashpoint and he chose not to. He could have accepted the 20p from her mum at the end of the journey as offered, and he chose not to. At the very least he was hoping she'd be cold and stranded and probably scared and upset.

claig · 08/06/2012 12:40

' If it wasn't her it would have been someone else'

Yes, but the point is it was her and it wouldn't have happened to her if she was allowed on the bus. You can't stop every crime from happening - there will always be rapists, murderers and muggers etc. - but you can do your best to not leave people in vulnerable positions late at night.

Most passengers probably didn't realise the seriousness of the situation, but bus companies should train their staff to understand what the possible consequences may be and they should be held to account if they behave with undue care, in my opinion.
