Is this just a another shit example of the selfish society? Could the bus driver or one of the other passengers not just given her the 20p she needed for her fare?

whilst it was shit that no-one would stump up the small financial contribution towards this woman's bus fare, it's not their fault she was raped

it was the rapist's fault.

someone not giving you 20p does not mean you will be raped.

joben · 08/06/2012 10:06

I wasn't impying it was their fault but wonder how they ( and the bus driver) could be so thoughtless and selfish. Clearly it's the rapist's fault, but it could also have been prevented. And no "someone not giving you 20p does not mean you will be raped" but in this case it did.

yes it wasn't their fault..but there are risks of a young woman walking home alone at that time and that should have meant someone gave her the 20p.

daenerysstormborn · 08/06/2012 10:11

when i was 14, i had to bus it to school. i had a free pass but it was only valid during certain times of the day. i can't remember why (it was a long time ago!) but one day i was coming home early, so had to pay the fare. the person in front put their money down, got a ticket and sat down, the money was still in the tray when i put my money in there too. i sat down, then the bus driver got up and made a bee line for me. one of the coins was a foreign one instead of a 5p. might not even have been my coin, could have been the other persons. bus driver shouted at me and told me to get off the bus as i was 5p short. i can't remember what happened beyond that bit (this was in 1984), but i can remember how much the bus driver shouted at me. he was just plain nasty.

OhNoMyFanjo · 08/06/2012 10:14

What a horrible case. I believe if she had not been there he would have attacked the next woman he saw. His intention was to do that to somebody that night. I hope everyone who reads this takes away tgat sometimes tge little things you do can make a big difference to that person.

daenerysstormborn · 08/06/2012 10:19

agree the rapist would have attacked whoever he came across. he was obviously on the prowl that night.

UnimaginitiveDadThemedUsername · 08/06/2012 10:19

daenerysstormborn - a lot of bus drivers where I grew up loved to bully children.

susiedaisy · 08/06/2012 10:21

The rapist is too blame, poor girl she must of been terrified, it is sad to hear that she pleaded to the bus driver for several mins and no one offered her 20p.

KateSpade · 08/06/2012 10:21

I read that story a while ago & it was in Nottingham & I'm at Uni near their.

I think the meanest thing was the driver not waiting whilst she got some money out. The bus driver has let me off my fair many times on my bus journey to work & I'd give it him back the next day.

HecateTrivia · 08/06/2012 10:25

Awful, isn't it? Poor girl.

Nobody is to blame but the rapist, of course. The decision to rape was his and his alone and he is 100% responsible for that and his responsibility should in no way be diminished by putting some of it onto other people.

BUT.

The bloody bus driver could have let her nip to an atm - which she asked him to do! That was vile. A few minutes. At that time of night. Where's his humanity?

If I'd been on the bus, I'd have given her the 20p. I think it's awful that nobody on the whole bus was willing to help her out and the bus driver - my god. 3am, woman alone, begging him to wait while she went to the atm. And he wouldn't.

threeleftfeet · 08/06/2012 10:30

It was absolutely the driver, and passenger's fault she was in a vulnerable position though. They could have helped and they chose not too.

I remember got on the last bus once when I was 15. I only had a fiver, and the driver refused to give me change or let me on the bus. He knew I was a child and still wanted to kick me off, at nearly midnight! A nice passenger gave me change. i would have had to walk home on my own 2 miles in the dark in a rough part of London. Some people are nice, and some are just arseholes.

HecateTrivia · 08/06/2012 10:39

That is true.

OhNoMyFanjo · 08/06/2012 11:42

Have just seen this discussed on tv and she spent 8 minutes arguing/begging the driver to let her on, said her mum would met her tge other end with the money. How did none of the other people on tge bus not give 20p just to get tge bus moving. Her poor mum who was driving to pick her up.

RandomAdams · 08/06/2012 11:46

In Birmingham when I was much younger, but an adult already, I happened to be be the only female on the night bus. The others were the driver and a ground of loud young males, coming back from drinking session in town.

I was uncomfortable so sat near the driver. We neared the terminus and it was clear I would have to get off same time as the inebriated youngsters. The driver asked me how far my home was, I explained. He asked me to stay on and would drop me at my door.

He did just this. I am grateful. There are nie people out there.

Presumably nothing nasty would have happened, but I still think it was good of him to somehow make sure.

RandomAdams · 08/06/2012 11:46

nice people

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 08/06/2012 11:49

It is not the drivers fault or the passengers! If they had given her the money the man would have still attacked someone.

It is the rapists fault and his alone! She should be able to walk home without been attacked by some dirty low life.

Blaming the bus driver and passengers ain't right. They didn't rape her and they certainly didn't make him attack her.

As a rape victim myself I don't understand how anyone can blame anyone but the rapist!

BlackOutTheSun · 08/06/2012 11:55

Why are people blaming the bus driver and passangers?

The only person to blame is the rapist

SardineQueen · 08/06/2012 12:03

Bus driver once ditched me somewhere in the middle of the night in the pissing rain. Not going to give details as someone might recognise the story! He was a right bastard. I hitched home, thankfully it was fine.

Some people are just right bastards unfortunately.
8 minutes and no fucker would give her 20p. She's only young. Makes me so mad. What is wrong with people.

SPsFanjoHarboursDeadCats · 08/06/2012 12:09

sardine are you seriously saying 'what's wrong with people' about the passengers and bus driver?! Not a thing said about the rapist Hmm

SardineQueen · 08/06/2012 12:09

Incidentally most bus companies (all?) ave a policy like this from aviva:

"If in special circumstances you are unable to pay for your intended journey, the driver will at their discretion accept you for travel only if your journey is deemed necessary and if you are able to give details of your name and address with some supporting identification to the satisfaction of the driver. Vulnerable customers, children under 16 and people who in the opinion of the driver are in distress and unable to pay their fare will be carried at all times providing their name and address can be given in order that the fare due may be collected, together with administrative costs where appropriate, at a later date."

He could have taken her, he could have let the 20p go, given that she was begging, miles away from home, and it was her last bus. He could have let her go to the cash point. He chose not to.

SardineQueen · 08/06/2012 12:12

It goes without saying that the man who raped her is an evil bastard and he needs to be locked up until he no longer poses a threat to anyone ie probably forever.

This thread is about our society though, and how people treat each other.

I have stumped up the odd 20p for fares for others, from time to time, especially late at night / if they seem upset. It's the human thing to do.

The driver on that bus could have taken her, he chose not to. Everyone there could see her distress, begging, for 8 minutes. They chose not to help either. In that 8 minutes she could have got to the cashpoint and back. But no, not allowed.

Since when did turning a blind eye to the difficulties of others become an acceptable way to behave?

TitsalinaBumSquash · 08/06/2012 12:15

The only person EVER at fault and in the wrong where rape is concerned is the rapist.

FanjoForHerMajesty · 08/06/2012 12:17

yes but the difference is not giving someone 20p during the day means they'd have a long walk, whereas at night it is definitely more risky to walk home due to the existence of rapists and muggers so therefore it would be even more of an act of human kindness to give a young woman 20p so she could avoid these risks, however small.

AnyFucker · 08/06/2012 12:18

The rapist is at fault for the rape

it doesn't take away the selfishness and ignorance of the bus driver and other passengers though

they are two different things

I would have given her the 20p

AnyFucker · 08/06/2012 12:18

and i would have given her the 20p at any time of the day or night
