Happy New Year!

This is the place for you if you have made a New Year's Resolution to get on top of the chaos in your home

Here you can do any of the following:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering

Here you can find out what it is all about. Try to ignore the cutesy stuff - cute the regulars on here are not! We also take some of the suggestions with a HUGE dose of salt (look out for wearing tie up shoes in the house)

If you decide to register for the e-mail updates from flylady be warned: unless you choose the daily digest only option you will be innundated with e-mails throughout the day. I will post the links you need each day so you don't need to register on the site to join in.

Dive in and mark your place - we start on January 1st!

evening all, bad mum alert, bad mum alert, spent half the morning whinging at DS for saying he was feeling poorly and that he was just tired because he hadn't been going to sleep when i asked him and then.........you guessed it he decided to demonstrate that he really was ill by vomiting all over me. Cue guilty mum alert, guilty mum alert .

So any plans that I had for the day have been shelved for looking after my poorly boy. although it is nice to see i have been trumped in the wierd ds contest .

so rest of day mainly involves wine, tv and takeaway. pizza or chinese, now that is the question. plus it is snowing rather heavily now. i am a little over the snow now, it's been hanging around for weeks now and i've had enough!

pluto your post made me smile although am not sure you have been doing the same

all you new fledglings remember not to burn out, babysteps are the way to go. but well done, you are doing far better than me and i've been here 4 months.

dwm glad i made you feel better about nakedness . seems we're not the only ones...must be a boy thing!

mmmmango hang on in there. am crap with maths so can't figure out how far ahead you are but if i am right there are normally a few os uf about earlyt in the morning, and we will all read your posts and encourage/sympathise/kick up the bum/ and dwm will inspire (delete as appropriate)

hag enjoy the cheesecake...no-one apart from me likes it in the elliepac household so when i buy some i know it's all mine (spread out over several days you understand )

tibni routine will resume soon so i hope ds adjusts, am with you on the walls thing. complete waste of time in this house. dd has voted with her hands anyway by tearing off the wallpaper behind her cot...she obviously thought it was too dirty to stay there .

ssc no need to be embarrassed one large glass of wine on nye equalled day long hangover for me . no breastfeeding excuse am just crap .

anyway, i have takeaway to order and wine to drink. see you tomorrow!

itshappenedagain · 02/01/2010 19:05

this evenings list:

shine sink
takedown and put away decorations
move table back to original location
mop kitchebn floor
do more washing and ironing

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 02/01/2010 19:12

I'm working on lots of updates of lists to keep me on track today so here's the latest update of state

List for today
Up done
Clothes away some done.
Ironing and away
lego models made missing pieces identified
hell R us done - roads are bloody dangerous out there at the mo
Tescos done
paperwork filing
Essay?
Washing one load onto dry one load to go on after lunch. not looked at this yet...

Laminating of lego instructions and the 11 tidy commandments - i feel needs must today.

Made an insert page for the control journal to shoove all the blumming membership cards i have acquired and likely to loose otherwise
(and for the pendants what the hell is the difference between loose and lose anyway?)

Right a few games with ds then bedtime and then i really need to start flying...

MrsDinky · 02/01/2010 19:44

Evening all!

I have a DS who likes wandering around naked too, at this time of year he tends to wear a top and will wear pants if requested but prefers not to.

Didn't post a list as I have said I am not starting till Monday, but to get myself back in the swing this is what I have done today.

Cleared remainder of stuff from yesterdays houseguests.
Hoovered downstairs - so quick when all the DCs crap things are out of the way
Swish and Swipe
Shined sink
Fed birds
Took DCs for a bracing walk
Walked to town for fruit from M&S
General tidying
One load washing done and in dryer

I have a new years resolution to use the car less, hence the walk to M&S, it is only 10 mins away but have been known to be lazy and take car.

DCs are sharing a room tonight as we still have a visitor staying, they are happily singing "The Twelve Days of Christmas" upstairs as I type. They have been singing this since 1st December, hope it's going to stop soon.

Off to watch the darts again......

DreamTeamGirl · 02/01/2010 20:02

Evening all
Too many posts to mention most by name except

Poor ellies DS- dont blame yourself. Mine has been horrid all day and it was only after I put him to bed that I thought 'oooh I wonder if ...'

Pluto awesome list hun!!

Chaos Did someone say laminating?? I thought I knew EVERY bit of fat fairy- what are the commendments??? Oohh and I dont have a membership section for cards so I will put one in mine too. Thanks. I did do the 'stick envelope here' for reciepts thing for Christmas journal tho, and that was just amazing

Going slightly against the flow, but I disagree about the shoes
I dont have lace ups, and I tend to think that is something that is slightly lost in translation, like how the have weird words for flour and so on, but I do dress to shoes that can be worn out to the garage/ bin/ car and I do dress as soon as I wake up. And I do shower, make my bed and make myself up the moment I wake up too.
Its a baby step that is SO ingrained now that I dont even realise I do it, and it is completely worthwhile

What I would say for the newbies is, that yes often it doesnt seem to make sense the things she says, but try it, just for a day or two, and if you still hate it THEN dump it. But many of us on here have avoided something- like me avoiding Swish & Swipe for 3 years or taking 2 years to do a control journal, and then when we do it we are like 'DOH! and suddenly it is all clear why she suggests it.
I guess I am jsut saying as well as 'expect to fail a few times' is 'park your sense of disbelief' and just TRY her ideas- you never know!

Not bad here BTW.
All the usual routines done, some decorations down and beds stripped, boil washed and 2 out of 3 back on

Getting nervous about next week tho when I am back to work with DS at school and me all alone. yikes!

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 02/01/2010 20:09

Well today has been a funny old day. DH went to pick up the car from the garage (£400 for a new clutch EEK! luckily I had started a fund for car stuff and we could cover it.) Been over to see the in-laws and spent longer there than I wanted, but hey! Great Granma, bless her has given us a wodge of money to replace all the stuff that has given up the ghost in the last month or so. So off we tootled to Curry's to look at prices and it looks as if I will be able to replace my Dryer, Dishwasher and printer and, and, and, and add some money to what I have already saved to get the american fridge/freezer I have always wanted. God Bless 'you can't take it with you dear, can you' Great Granma So now I know what I want I can order off their website through Topcashback and get some money back as well, woohoo!! Then it was off to my parents for a quick (long) visit and got takeaway on the way home.So not a lot done today.

Baby Step 2 Done
Shine sink Done
Washing up Done
Washing 3 loads done Will put aother on over night
Carry on with bedroom Not managed anything today but DH may take DC out tomorrow so I will concentrate on doing it tomorrow

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 02/01/2010 20:09

The Eleven Commandments of Tidy:

Keep your sink clean and shiny.

Get dressed every morning, even if you don?t feel like it. Don?t forget your lace-up shoes.

Do your morning and before bedtime routine everyday.

Don?t allow yourself to be sidetracked by the computer.

Pick up after yourself. If you get it out, put it away.

Don?t try to do two projects at once. ONE JOB AT A TIME.

Don?t pull out more than you can put back in one hour.

Do something for yourself everyday, maybe every morning and night.

Work as fast as you can to get the job done. This will give you more time to play later.

Smile even when you don?t feel like it. It is contagious. Make your mind up to be happy and you will be.

Don?t forget to laugh everyday. Pamper yourself, you deserve it.

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 02/01/2010 20:19

Cool rules Chaos. I really have to learn rule 6 as I am hopeless at that. Also I usually have 2 or 3 jobs running at the same time.

itshappenedagain · 02/01/2010 20:26

list:

shine sink
takedown and put away decorations done
move table back to original location done
mop kitchebn floor
do more washing and ironing
hoover all downstairs

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 02/01/2010 20:43

Chaos surveys the bombsite, and starts counting....

... i think i have about 12 jobs on the go at the mo Time to start finishing off a few me thinks. No essay tonight again as the master woodworker has only just finished being noisy in the kitchen so only just about to shove ds into bath for bed. There is no way i am draggin all the paperwork out for an 1hrs worth of work. Will try to finish the to do list instead.

MiniMincemeat · 02/01/2010 21:17

Waaaah! Washing...I forgot to do any washing...It was that repeat of Cranford that did it...

Maybe I can just get a load done now. Oh, DH says no too late now!

I think it is going to take a bit of effort to get back into this!

Here is what I have done today (just to make myself feel slightly better):
swish and swipe
make beds
sweep kitchen and dining area floor after each meal
folded and put away some clothes
cooked a roast dinner
wrote a letter
supermarket shop

to do:
finish cleaning kitchen and shine sink

Only scanned everyone's posts this evening, sorry. Seems to be a lot of discussion about which bits of the fat fairy's 'rules' to take on board. As DTG says most things have a basis in common sense, try it, see what works for you. For me, the morning routine works best if I get up 15 mins before DS and have a shower, swish and swipe get dressed (to socks for me) then make my bed. I do my make-up after breakfast when I brush DS's teeth. I've been showering after DS wakes up during the holidays - it has been great to have a lie-in but I've felt totally disorganised and behind schedule all the same!

droitwichmum · 02/01/2010 21:18

Hello everyone!

Special mention for today's newbies: FlamingBird, Mmmango, Bookswapper, asdx2, in1981 and tigga! ellie poor DS. Don't feel guilty they all put it on most of the time but it does feel awful when they are really ill doesn't it?
MrsGok thank goodness for Great Granma - star of the day to her I think
BYR definitely a boy thing running around with no clothes on. DS made me feel cold today just by looking at him
matumble how was your day?
chaos whatever happened to one job at a time?
3x how is Mt Washmore? Hope its more like a hillock by now
missb liking the meal planning. There are some ideas for flying with DC helping (having their own missions) I'll post a link tomorrow
Bobbie if you look at what you have done you will find you did loads - especially all that cooking. I often do a weekend list so there is no guilt trip if the list is not cleared by the end of Saturday
MM hope you had a good day
Cat yay - a cleared list (as good as) well done you!
tibni you did well today - babysteps!
pluto impressive list cleared including meltdown. Poor DS2 I'm glad I don't have to go through teething again
hag enjoy that cheesecake! See you on Monday
itshappened Saturdays are supposed to be 'family fun time' according to the fat fairy so no problems with your day. Decided not to advertise the fact this morning as you had all probably had more than enough of the family by now...
MrsD yours may still be on Christmas but my DS tonight asked when the Easter Bunny was coming
DTG I know what you mean about the shoes. I know that even when we are 'allowed' to I can't wear jeans to work because they don't seem right so putting shoes on might make you get down to work better. Worth a try.
in1981 great start just take it steady
FlamingBird it will work this time - just stick with us
tigga well done on getting rid of the tree (loving the sign offs too!
Mmmango no problem with Thailand - isn't one of us in NZ?

Is that everyone? Sorry if I missed anyone out.
I've had quite a good day (at least that fish tank got done) and will finish the rest off tomorrow. See you in the morning (or whatever time it is in Thailand Mmmango)

I had to x post with someone after a run-down like that!

Hello MM you seem to have got quite a lot done today. What was DH doing while you were watching Cranford? He should have been putting washing on

Well, I managed to do the following:
-two bags of clothes to charity shop
-one bag of books to second hand shop and got paid £4.50 for them
-didn't buy more books from either charity shop or book shop - RESULT!!
-emptied recycling
-meals planned
grocery shop completed ....and....
sink is shiny!

Didn't achieve the hoovering or sorting out DD1's room as DD1 and 2 convinced me that shopping was the thing for today. Taken after negotiating room clearing tomorrow. I know why she doesn't want to do it - currently looks as though someone has taken contents of large clothes shop and tipped them in her room - and then added some odd bits of rubbish and a handful of A level notes! Tomorrow we will be ruthless!

Both DDs now engaged in bumper edition of Casualty. I can't stand the trauma so half an hour of mn then off to bed to read. One of the pluses of teenagers is you don't have to get them undressed and into their pajamas!

MiniMincemeat · 02/01/2010 21:38

Hehe DWM he was watching it too. He protested initially but then got sucked in...then got it mixed up with Lark Rise to Candleford so I spent most of it explaining that actually 'saffy' wasn't the post mistress this time but was the daughter of the railway engineer man but was currently in India (not that she was actually in it anyway)! I think he probably would have been better employed putting the washing on

Well done on all your recycling MissBennett Mmmango every time I see your name now I will be reminded that, being in Thailand, you can say this because you are likely to have recently eaten a properly ripe yummy mango !

Sorry, am very waffly this evening!

commuter · 02/01/2010 21:57

You are all very quick to get your decorations down! They hide the dust. I am still hoping for some Christmas visitors tomorrow through the snow and icy roads. May succumb before Epiphany on account of having to saw the tree up.

But I can see a difference already - it's that 15 minute mentality I will have to adopt!

washing done
blitz hall of wellies and drying outdoor clothes done
hoover done
soup and trifle made for potential lunch
clean mucky boots cluttering up otherwise shiny utility sink
drink wine

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 02/01/2010 23:21

right last update before bed:

List for today
Up done
Clothes away done
Ironing and away
lego models made missing pieces identified
hell R us done - roads are bloody dangerous out there at the mo
Tescos done
paperwork filing some done
Essay?
Washing -tomo's tops up wash only to do now.

Laminating of lego instructions and the 11 tidy commandments - done and file in relevant places.

also thrown minor woobly due to the imposed bedtime deal which resulted in it being 10pm before ds was in bed. Hopefully he will lie in a bit. I'm for an early start to try to get some essay bits done first thing.

clemette · 02/01/2010 23:53

I shone my sink (yay me).
Today was quite productive but only in an organisational type way. I filled in the new calendar for this month and made my month's to do list on toodledo.
Also took the decorations down and put my DS's curtains up.
Tomorrow need to persuade DH to put up the new coat rails and then start thinking about school uniform (DD starts reception on Tuesday).

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 03/01/2010 01:44

not sure what happened about the early night either

elliepac · 03/01/2010 08:12

morning one and all,

ds is thankfully much perkier this morning and has managed some food late yesterday evening and not thrown up so guess it was some kind of very quick bug.

such a lot of posts yesterday that i haven't got time to respond to them all or nothing would get done here but dtg is right about giving everything the fat fairy says a whirl. i know i don't subscribe to the dressed to shoes bit but there are other things that i have thought wouldn't make a difference but have. i remember thinking when i started this 'what difference to my hosue can having a chiny sink make?' and then realised that it does make a massive difference particularly motivationally (speaking as one who has a very unshiny sink at this moment in time and is very irritated by that fact). so just give everything a go and see what works for you. .

today i have to do everything i didn't do yesterday so:-

wm on
dw on + washing up (only have a slimline dishwasher in tiny kitchen and there's too many pots to fit them all in )
general tidy
mop floors
s+s bathroom (i love this babystep)
work trousers
enjoy last day at home with dcs

have a good day everyone!

StillCounting · 03/01/2010 08:40

Happy New Year everyone!! Reporting in for duty.

A warm welcome to all Newbies!! Loads and loads of you (or are you name-changers?) If so, could someone please provide a key!!

Guests left last night and I felt so exhausted I lay on the sitting room floor while dh fed me alcohol through a straw ...feel a bit wretched this morning .. and the house is almost as bad as it was in my pre-Flying days ... could cry ....

Oh well, back to baby-steps .....will be doing 1, 2 and 3 today so I'm off to shine my sink.

Oh, btw, really didn't want to believe that getting dressed to shoes would help ...but it definitely does .. ...

Wish me luck (last day of hols and I really do NOT want to clean all day but here goes):

  1. shine sink & clean kitchen
  2. pick laundry up from all over house
  3. tidy and clean sitting room
  4. tidy and s&s bathroom
  5. strip all beds and change
  6. start washing
  7. clean out gps
  8. dd bath toenails/fingernails
  9. personal grooming for myself prior to going back to work tomorrow (nails etc)
10. tidy up hall and landings 11. clean downstairs cloakroom 12. evening routine, clothes out etc 13. early bed

Have a good Sunday everyone ....

StillCounting · 03/01/2010 08:41

Ellie - forgot to say - glad your ds better!!

Waves to everyone else!!

BlackYellowRed · 03/01/2010 08:50

Morning!

Today:
dry sheets and put them & new pillows I bought on our bed
empty dishwasher
hoover and dust bedrooms
clean bathroom
clean out the rabbit cage

The downstairs is still tidy. Might wizz the hoover around again. Keeping up with just wiping kitchen as I go.

I'm having a serious problem with overflowing amounts of recycling. Our wheelie bin is completely full and there's a huge bag of more in my house. I don't know what to do with it all. They don't empty the bin until Thursday. We haven't suddenly become super eco or anything. I did notice our normal bin isn't as full as it used to be. Suppose it's a good thing, really!

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 03/01/2010 09:10

My aim today is to finish the littlies room anything else I get done will be a bonus. Oh! and I also need to do some more washing up, we got behind and obviously everyday we are adding to it, also need to do at least 2 washes to keep on top of it.

And just to add to the chaos DC2 has broken the downstairs loo, tried to take the top off for some reason and dropped it. Broke the syphon and the pan [roll eyes]
