Happy New Year!

This is the place for you if you have made a New Year's Resolution to get on top of the chaos in your home

Here you can do any of the following:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering

Here you can find out what it is all about. Try to ignore the cutesy stuff - cute the regulars on here are not! We also take some of the suggestions with a HUGE dose of salt (look out for wearing tie up shoes in the house)

If you decide to register for the e-mail updates from flylady be warned: unless you choose the daily digest only option you will be innundated with e-mails throughout the day. I will post the links you need each day so you don't need to register on the site to join in.

Dive in and mark your place - we start on January 1st!

So pleased you had more sleep last night. Hopefully you will have another good night tonight.

Thanks for the sympathy as well.

commuter · 07/01/2010 10:17

Sorted another day off on account of snow and school. So today will have to hoover all over . For s and s I am a great fan of those flat packets of antibac wipes - buy cheapo ones, they do a great job, also smell nice. Off to walk to shop through the snow. I can't carry much so have to go more often. Am in awe of people who can work a slow cooker to their advantage. I do actually have one, but it's in the garage in a pile somewhere, so I must look up a recipe and see what I can do (not a lot)...

ln1981 · 07/01/2010 11:13

woohoo!! dd is finally back at nursery! her room is the only one with heating and the council didnt update their website til 8.30am so not even half the class in but i am so HAPPY!!! (so is she by the way!) she was beginning to eat my cupboards bare!

list for today-
washing done and on airer done
breakfast dishes done
todays mission
15min declutter- toys in living room today, they are piled up behind sofa and just realised that 'Piled' is the key word!
some ironing
shine sink.

byr it was nice not having to carry washing down as well as any other stuff, push the button and go. only frees up a few minutes but evry little helps!

Hope you all have a nice afternoon. catch you all later!

BlackYellowRed · 07/01/2010 11:19

Result! I've been e-mailing back and forth with the council this morning and we're getting an extra recycling wheelie bin! They still haven't emptied today and didn't think they would with the snow, but I can see an end to the bags full of the stuff in our house.

Kids are at school today. Getting them ready was easy again. DS did get a bit stroppy about getting dressed though.

Better go pick him up and then get some jobs done!

optimisticmumma · 07/01/2010 11:29

Had a bit of a crazy morning here and have only just gor dressed . My DSs school sent a rather stroppy email to everyone basically questioning why so many of them were off school yesterday . So we all do as we are told - get 'em up, have a row, get'em dressed, have a row look at school website, listen to local radio and - NOTHING! (That shout was directed at them!) Being an 'old' mother I was damned if I was making them walk for half an hour to train station to then see about a train without knowing if school was definitely open.guess what? it closed at 8.30!!!! Our kids in the local area all leave home at 7.30 to get to school so realy very
And another thing. My teenagers 10 foot snowman was alos destroyed! Bit like sandcastles isn't it??

Rant over!

And breathe......

DTMummy - far from being the class creep my DD is a jammy whatsit and has avoided detention by the skin of her teeth due to the snow! In fact it would be fair to say she actually prayed for snow ( and not much of that happens here!)so she could get her Tech done. I ellicited a promise that if her prayers were answered she would actually do her work and held her to it!!!

Right flying...

umm....

dressed done
um
dw on done
um
washing processed willbe doing all day
um
defrost sth for supper ha ha
um
drink coffee with neighbour 8about to do*

Trouble is I just think of snow days as extra holidays.....

see you all later!

optimisticmumma · 07/01/2010 11:31

due to typos and spelling - sorry! Will get my act together later!

StainlessSteelCat · 07/01/2010 14:32

Hi! No more dramatics here thankfully, jsut busy ... and internet been a bit sulky too

DS been off nursery this week as it was closed due to snow, and DD fine now I think ... she was sick again this morning (about 6 am - really not a good way to start a day) and I'm really hoping that that was the last of it .. got one clean bed sheet for her cot left, and the washing machine has frozen so can't do any more! ALso, not got any hot water because a pipe has frozen somewhere ... thankfully heating still works

so, today ...
very little! given up, just not allowing nayone to leave too much mess anywhere, and will get on top of it all next week when DD starts nursery ...

Pluto · 07/01/2010 14:39

DH snowed in the in the town he works in last night and had to stay with my parents. This meant he was unavailable for dawn pre-sunrise shift with DS2 and I was up and doing breakfast with him at 6.20am. However, I was super organised ladt night and had laid everything out and consequently it all fely very cosy and tranquil!

(Feeling very smug emoticon)

Today I have

negotiated the ironing mountain
processed a load in the w/m
changed snotty sheets in DS2's cot
meal planned for the next 5 days and wrtten a shopping list for DH (who made it back this am)
worried a bit about finding time to do school work before I go back

still need to...
tidy loft room

PositiveAttitude · 07/01/2010 14:41

Afternooon ladies, just a quick log in to see how it is all going. This thread moves so fast!

OM - I would be well annoyed at your DCs school! Have they no understanding? When was DS's AS mock exam? DD2 s has a couple next week and she is hoping that it will all still stay as it is, so that she misses hers! She is using her days off to do some revision though. Yes, to me snow days are extra holidays too, especially after not having much time to come out of holiday mode!

Communter - My slow cooker is my life saver. I love it and use it at least 3 or 4 times each week. Once you have few good recipes I honestly think you will get on well. My favourites are curries, shepherds pie, bolgnese, I also do my joints in there for roasts. It makes it wonderfully moist. What sort of meal would you like to be able to do in it? I can pass on a some ideas if I know what you like.

Mrs Dinky - I hope the Lemsip does the trick for everyone.
How did you enjoy the darts, then? And how are you coping with no more every evening? The final was brilliant, more so because Barnie wasn't in it . I did really get to like Simon Whitlock and will enjoy following him this year in the premiership, but national pride won out on the night and good old Power done good!!!!

manic waves to everyone else as DS now needs computer "for revision". - Funny how the revision web pages look very much like games pages and I get frequent "ooohhhhh" "aaahhhhrr"" Yes" "NOOOOOO" "I'm dead". Not quite like I remember revising?????

optimisticmumma · 07/01/2010 14:58

Afternoon all...
I have calmed down a bit you'll be pleased to hear! Enjoying the peace and quiet before the hungry hordes return from the 'slopes'!

Managed to dig out the car this morning after the restoratative (is that a word?) cup of coffee with my neighbour ( a good friend)so at least i feel I could get out if I wanted to!
Also, the boys' school put a very apologetic message on to their website so I am feeling a bit more magnanimous towards them too!
The Optimistic household has resumed it's usual levels of calm

Just about to put chicken casserole in the oven for later...

See you for alcohol later!

MrsDinky · 07/01/2010 15:04

Hello everyone,

My turn for bumped heads today, Dcs were using the Ewbank carpet sweeper to help mummy and Ds managed to whack DD on the temple with the handle whilst turning round. She seems fine now, but has got a big egg on her head.

You all very nearly persuaded me to get guinea pigs last month, this month it is slow cookers I am getting tempted by! I have hankered after one for ages, it is just lack of storage space that prevents me (even with the recent decluttering the kitchen is very full indeed). Will have to think what I could throw out to make space (DH's coffee machine!).

PA Darts final was a cracker wasn't it? Barney was really not himself (apparently recently diagnosed with diabetes). I was glad to see him go out TBH, wouldn't have liked to see him humiliated by The Power. I too really enjoyed watching Whitlock, but I also have come round to Taylor a lot, never used to like him, but as I have read more interviews and seen him more, he has grown on me. They played and spoke afterwards in a very gentlemanly manner I thought. At least can watch a bit of normal telly again (when Sky works, intermittent in this weather).

Anyway, better go, DCs running wild again.

droitwichmummy · 07/01/2010 15:25

Just reviewing where I am. Don't think I have done much -
finish my cross stitch - huge and been on frame in living room for as long as I can remember. Only got some outlining to do and then its done done
take frame down and put away done but not put away yet
clear dining table (hot spot)
washing done
ironing if any washing dry done
clear up after painting/playdough (if he does any) almost done
kitchen missions not yet
s&s later
shine sink later after painting things dried
put washing away later
empty dw done
do some revision if DNeice appears to entertain DS no she has not appeared
anything else that comes to mind! cleaned microwave but only because lunch exploded in it
Hey - done loads of my list and done some knitting too!

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 07/01/2010 15:26

SSC lol at sulky internet. I have that but have given mine a kick up the bum stuck back together the dodgey connector with selotape Hope it stops sulking soon.

PA- didn't you know they now make special revision games not how i remember revision either.

Essay update and I know you arent really interested but tis helping to post is so feel free to ignore the following.

ok, main bulk of essay needs to be 3,300 words. I have 3,230 but i havent done half of the literature review so will have to shift a load of it to the appendixes. But hey its getting there and looking likley that the assignment might well be completed. Feeling so much better for having taken something for the yuckiness. I reckon I have 1000 words bulk work, i know i have 1500 words appendix minimum and i need to be selective in my data inclusion.

So progress has been made. Am heading off for a break. might go see if ds is up to a board game or something for an hour. Then back to the books til ds's bedtime. Save me something stiff i am likely to need it.

MulleredOnWine · 07/01/2010 15:36

Hello!
I'm back, HNY everyone.
First job to think of new non xmas name not done

But i have tackled the disgusting kitchen floor - hooray!

feetheart · 07/01/2010 16:03

Failed miserably to do hotspot before bed last night, 2 mins in the daytime is SO much easier Will try harder.
Babystep today is one that I have, mainly, kept from various previous Flying attempts so should be able to manage it!

School closed again - DD spent all morning doing crafty things she got for Christmas and getting me to teach her cross stitch (I can cope with 6 yr old level, yours sounds a bit more challenging droitwichmum) DS spent morning at pre-school drinking hot choc and eating toast again though he did go outside today!

Today have:
1 x load washing done and hung up
Dusted various surfaces in living room
Wiped LOTS of cupboard doors in kitchen and still haven't finished. Had no idea I had so many - there are 17
Swept kitchen floor
Hotspot in kitchen
Got DD to do some tidying in her room. Usually set cooker timer for 5 mins but the other day gave her a boiled sweet and said she had to tidy until sweet was gone - approx 15mins! Today she came back and asked for a 2nd sweetie

PositiveAttitude - I'd be up for a slow cooker recipe swap/share. Use mine weekly and am always up for trying something new - last winter it was rice pudding and steamed puddings - yummmmmmmmmm

DC have created some amazing dinosaur/playmobil world and are completely absorbed so I'm off to make tuna pasta bake and attack rest of cupboard doors

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 07/01/2010 16:09

Well have got 2/3rds of the worksurface done, seems to be taking forever. Then I will need to go round all the surfaces and scrub them.

Flagging a bit now from the begining of the week. DH wants to know when I am going to order the bits but I don't want to untill the kitchen is a least looks as if I am not to much of a slattern.

ln1981 · 07/01/2010 16:16

om not surprised your annoyed! I only found out dd was back in nursery as one of the dads came back to the car park without the lad thats in her class-they decided at 8.30am her room was open-the others werent (Heating probs). I had to unload dd and ds2 (who wasNOT happy) and walk back up!

Have not really doen much to be honest since this morning, just wanted to check in as by after kids bedtime, there is so much to read. going sledging after tea as kids sledges arrived today-yeah!! not sure who is going to have more fun...

StillCounting · 07/01/2010 17:55

Hi all,

Confession time ... had every opportunity to clear up home office and master bedroom today (both in usual pitiful state) and I haven't done it ...no excuses ... just a bad case of CNBA!!! Couldn't (or wouldn't) get started somehow and absolutely no sense in it because all the more to do tomorrow ...so time frittered away that I'll never get back ... didn't even enjoy it because I felt guilty for not get stucking in!! How ridiculous is that??? [sigh]

Hope you have all had a much more productive day than me ... in spite of snow-bound and/or ill dc or horrid coughs and colds..

However... to read of people stealing children's toys and knocking down snowmen ... what's the world coming to eh??

MummyD - you HAVE done quite a bit you know!! Was it 'naked' painting in your house this morning then?

BTW because schools are closed on Wed afternoons here, an amazing array of state-subsidised and private organisations have been established who run sports/language/music/any activity you can think of(!) courses for dc (and during school holidays too). Belgian dc are kept v. v. busy (!) the provision is, as BlackYellowREd will testify, amazing.... it does involve a bit of juggling re work & drop-offs and pick-ups though but distances not very far fortunately ...

Same with Feetheart - another long list!!... I do my evening routine in the afternoon because I'm usually too lazy tired once I've sat down of an evening to move again, and it's so cold and dark in this house it's much easier to do earlier in the day.

Hey Mullered good to see you ...!!! I can see your floor shining from here ...

WhereChaos - essay IS interesting ... what's it about???? Well done on making such progress, hadn't realised it was quite such a mammoth task ..

MrsDinky hope your dd's head is less sore now. You won't try and combine gps with slow cookers will you??? [Some interesting Peruvian recipes come to mind [grin[] Hope your dh got to work safely!

Glad your day improved as it went along Optimistic

lol MsBEnnett about your bath pot pourri

Well done with your super organised start to the day PLuto

Glad you had a better night's sleep Flamesparrow BlackYellowRed Proficiat re: bin!

Hope warm water restored soon SSC Whyme2 how did your dh's interview go?

Waves to 1981, MrsGok, PA (some slow cooker recipes/tips wd be good!!!) Commuter Matumble and Mango

Not going to post a list at this time of the day and set myself up for failure, but just going to try and do X4lots of 15 mins in kitchen, laundry, master bed and home office.

Have a good evening everyone!!

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 07/01/2010 18:26

you'll need it before you read on...

It is an investigation into the methods in which vocabulary is learnt and the skinner-vs-Chosky debate, applied to scientific termnology learning and applied to teaching to prevent underachievement due to an inability to access the vocabulary and the resources which are used to teach the vocabulary....

Its at the chomsky-skinner debate bit that i fall asleep. Struggling to find enthusiasm at the mo. hope to perk up after ds is in bed. He is draining at the mo.
Plus the next job is to trawl though the big pile of paperwork to find the bits that i need.

missbennett · 07/01/2010 18:50

Well so far I've achieved very little!
Got to work to find no water on our floor so had to go two floors up to get a drink, use the loo etc!
Got home to find DH cooking tea but hasn't yet taken Christmas decorations to loft .
Is my Guides night tonight so I'll be out later and limited time to do much in the house - am determined however to do mission which should be achievable and it looks as though, as a special treat for me today, the DH and DDs (who have all been at home all day) have used every dish in the house thus giving me the opportunity to hone my washing-up skills later
Right, off to eat tea and be a jolly Guider.

StillCounting · 07/01/2010 19:30

Crikey WhereChaos ... [swigs gin .. and yes I know everyone - I should be tidying up instead of procrastinating Mnsetting] that is a fairly stiff topic, particularly the applied scientific terminology bit. Interesting though. I once had the honour of speaking to Noam himself, believe it or not, in a former life (publishing). I was scared stiff (imagine (v. timorously) having to point out typos to "God" himself) and he could not have been more charming.

Weren't there some articles in the press recently revisiting Skinner ... .... will go and have a look ....????

Hats off to you MissBennett ... that must take commitment on a freezing night like tonight ....

OK, back to my 15 min mega room rescues ...

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 07/01/2010 20:04

The skinner Noam debate seems to be an arguement between the initial acquistion of language and the further development of language. From what i can see both have valid points, skinner is more relevant to teaching specific terminology and i need to look at rewrting the pile of poo that will currently fail me. Just check it against the marking criteria. Am not well and hate writing essays.

WhereChaosTheoryRules · 07/01/2010 20:08

[sorry] that was a bit of a rant. i think i am going to take a nap and some meds and see if it makes me feel a bit more positive. And then have another look and see if it can be tweaked.

optimisticmumma · 07/01/2010 20:37

Crikey WCRT more power to your elbow!
Am going to look up Skinner and Whatshisname!
As a teacher I really feel I should know what you are talking about!

Large bottle of red open over here if anyone's interested!

MrsGokWantsatidyhouse · 07/01/2010 20:54

I'm not going to do much more today, will make DC1 sandwiches later as it looks like he is going into school tomorrow. DH's school may be open too but with some restrictions. Just have to see what the weather does tonight, they are predicting -11 yikes!!

Have washed up the dinner things and I have a shiney sink . Cereal and bowls and drinks ready for tomorrow morning. School clothes are ready. Wash in hte machine ready to switch on in the morning.

Today I have

Kept on top of the washing up! yay! me
shined my sink woohoo!
washing is up to date whoop! whoop!
Cleared the middle counter (all bar 1/5th) and half of it scrubbed.
The clothes mountain has been moved (only from the kitchen to the settee in hte lounge. Can't put them away until DC1's room and our room are finished but needed to move them for when the appliances come)

Not as much as I had hoped but at least it is more than I have been doing.
