Decluttering Thread 13 - Hopefully Lucky For Some!

Good morning fellow sorters, chuckers & sellers! Starting a new thread as No 12 was almost full. This thread is one of my favourites & I find it hugely inspiring. I have a very long way to go as my house still resembles a jumble sale but I have got rid of a lot over the last few months plus made some money into the bargain. Last night I transferred several carrier bags of clothes that are on Vinted into a pink velvet storage chest that, ironically, hadn’t been assembled & was taking up space in DH’s office 🤣🤣🤣 It’s now in front of the storage cubes in the lounge & honestly, the pleasure I get from seeing it & the space created is immense.
I need a day to dedicate to Vinted as I have bags of clothes still to photograph & upload, some clothes to try on which may end up on there too & some TJC rings to photograph for selling. They were quite expensive but I rarely wore them & now they’re too big. I have a huge car bill to pay so the extra pennies will be great. Have a productive day all!

DC have finished school and a week of doing not much seems to have inspired them to clear out a bunch of stuff … slow but steady

Left 9 books outside for people to pick up if they want them

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 05/07/2026 02:28

Sold the spinner ring on Vinted.

I’m watching the Hoarders channel. The early episodes say 3 million Americans have hoarding disorder, and ten series later it’s saying 19 million.

I wonder if there are more sufferers, or more ppl willing to acknowledge it.

Been going through paperwork slowly but surely. Also sorted through phones that have been kept rather than recycled.

More vhs tapes for the bin, but it’s already nearly full and not emptied for another two weeks, so I’ve set them to one side in the garden.

I suspect one tv could be donated or more likely recycled.

Stuff is taking up much less space, like with like in boxes until a DC can take me through what to keep and what should go.

IndianSummer78 · 06/07/2026 20:41

It could just be statistics tidyclutter. Hoarding disorder is a fairly newish diagnosis, it used to be thought of as being part of obsessive compulsive personality disorder.

Back at the decluttering again. DH finished building the wheeled shelves for the garage so moved boxes onto that and made room to move around.

Recycled - 3 very large cardboard boxes
Binned - 5 damp & pest soiled boxes, plastic lids, rusted screws and old wall plugs.
Compost bin - moss, leaves, grass cuttings, twigs.
Bagged - canvas storage bags for an old gazebo, 4 canvas sides for old gazebo, polystyrene insert from recycled box.

Packed ready for recycling - old hoover, old sandwich maker, escooter. Small bag of worn textiles. Metal radiator, metal pieces from an old door, fire grate.

Could do with a skip again this summer as waiting for bins to he emptied every two weeks is slowing me down. Have some old tiles ready to be disposed of too and don't think recycling centre takes them.
Hoping to be consistent for the summer. Great to read that everyone is still doing well.

Sold a New Look dress on Vinted for £3 & a brand new pair of Lemonade sandals for £18. DD & I bought a few nice things at a couple of charity shops, including 2 lovely china wall plates for £1 each which should sell for at least a fiver. I may keep the kingfisher one though!

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 07/07/2026 21:11

Sold a ring for £1 on Vinted then took about half an hour to find the bloody thing! More bits added to the charity shop bag. I have some XL tops to try on but pretty sure they will be too big for me now. Put a dress in there too that I used to wear loads but is now like a tent!

Hope everyone is getting on ok in this heat! we have continued decluttering; I took another large bag to the charity shop again on Monday, as well as few items to work which I hope can be used there. Trying to get enough stuff together again for another "wall mart" day!

Out so far:
4 kids clothing items
skirt
6 more books
pair of pants
pump bottle
nail polish
lithograph print
tupperware lid
small plastic container
3 cat toys (I think I have to accept our cat is beyond playing age)
small plstic toy
hiking backpack
roll of wrapping paper
2 cushio covers
17 vinyl records
play tent
14 pairs of kids socks & pants
colouring book
packet of plastic cutlery
pack of paper cups

BUT I think I had a little emotional shopping spree. My friend was visiting (she lives overseas, in a very small town) and wanted to go shopping. I usually hate shopping, but the mall was airconditioned so I was slightly more happy to go than normal. And I bought a jumper, a waistcoat, and a necklace for me; a pack of 2 water guns for DC (who had been asking for one for ages!), new school backpack and a card game for the whole family, Even though they are nice items which I love (card game especially - we have played every night) the whole point is to reduce stuff. I think it was definitely emotional spending. I felt I had done so well that I deserved a treat. Plus my wardrobe is looking more lean than it has in years. Still. Must do better

Hope wall mart does well for you on these sunny days. I think a card game that has been played and enjoyed is a win and also very easy to store or pass on.

I got a bit more sorted in the garage and DH built a second set of wheeled shelves for me.

Four wooden boxes and three cardboard boxes emptied and put aside for recycling. Contents have been placed in plastic tubs and will no longer gather dust and cobwebs. 18 tubs filled this summer. Last year I only managed 5 jumbo tubs but filled skips. You can actually see the difference.

Listed some wheels, car cover and a couch for sale and have sold the wheels already. I only put a nominal charge as I didn't want to be messed about but am happy to just get rid of them. Can actually see the white goods we stored in there 3 years ago and might list those next.

Binned - elbow strap that was no good, pillowcase from a duvet set already recycled, wooden offcuts and put a tin of old rusted nails and screws aside ready to be binned after the bin collection on Sunday.

Feel like I've created a bit of momentum, in the garage at least, with around 4 hours work twice this week. Once sorted I want to pest proof it and get a roller door. That's the motivation.

Good luck everyone!

Clearout continues - our hallway has several small bags and parcels scattered about, on their way to new homes. I just have to find the time to drop them off.

After I said I won't do vinted again, I left it for a few days and thought i'll take everything down and to the charity shop this morning, and then on Saturday (very early too) loads of stuff sold. I parcelled it all up and dropped off - now I have absolutely no more packing material either, the past parcel went out wrapped in a gift bag lol

Top, trousers, skort, sweatshirt and bundle of 3 kids books sold on Vinted
a gingerbread house kit
3 gift bags
puzzle
kids straw cup, broken
metal jar
massive kids stamp set
33 thick academic journals which DH finally (reluctantly) recycled
christmas wreath
lipstick
3 cleaning products that I won't use
new loofah donated

In = a book and an ice cream guide, both gifts

Hi everyone! I have a week off work before my children finish for the summer, we have a skip and I am determined to declutter and clean to make our lives so much easier!

Today I came across a whole bundle of my eldest daughter's school books from over the years (she's coming up to year9 in September) what does everyone do with these?

Darkspiderplant · 14/07/2026 17:19

Big bag of clothes to the charity shop from my wardrobe. Mostly work clothes from the late 90s 😳 why have I kept them this long? I haven’t worn most of them in 18+ years!

MarmaladeSandwich7 · 14/07/2026 22:00

An Avon car diffuser with refill - it didn’t fit my vents & I really don’t know what to do with it.

I think, well I hope, today was the final sort out of the garage. All my late DH’s tools habe been sorted and I know what I have and where it is. The ‘junk’ I can’t get rid of went to the shed. I can now see the floor, and swept it, and get to the freezer and the shelves with all the tools.

Took lots of random stuff to the tip today. Our tip has a section for good stuff to go to a charity shop so I put a few nice things I didn’t want anymore in there.

Hoping it will last, but I’ve said that before soooooo many times.

I have had such a busy few weeks that I have forgotten to post on here!

3 old towels binned
2 bedding sets in clothing bank to be recycled.

4 bottles of shower gels/shampoo and conditioner used up.

A bag of some old toys to a local pre school..they don't get played with here.

2 jumpers to charity shop (they are itchy material, son won't wear them)

I feel like i am slowly getting somewhere now with the decluttering 👍
