June know it's the fledgling flyers?

Stillchuckingit · 30/05/2011 09:53

A warm welcome to the June Fledgling Flyers' thread.

If the state of your house is getting you down, this is the thread where we follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style Wink) with lots of chat and support along the way and where lace-up shoes are definitely optional.

A huge thank you to Linzer for keeping us all on track so splendidly during May and thank you to DroitwichMummy for the thread title.

As usual, we will be following the Flylady three-pronged approach:

  1. Baby-steps (a daily step to establish routines)
  2. Then baby-steps + 15 mins daily decluttering
  3. (And once decluttered) babysteps + daily missions

If you are feeling overwhelmed by clutter and mess, you can make a difference, one step at a time.

For more information, have a look here. You don't need to sign up to Flylady e-mails (we advise you not to do so in fact - you will be overwhelmed - all the information you need can be gleaned from this thread).

All long-standing members, intermittent returnees, lurkers and newcomers welcome!!

Evening all,ok have had a quick glance at this "flylady" today but am going to have a closer inspection when this message is posted.Have to say I am loving the ta da list & the wish list even more. Now fro someone who has put a 40hr week in for at least the last 2 weeks on the flippin PTA I am actually quite proud of what I have achieve today & how restrained I am becoming about other bits,so......
Ta da list

dog walked (neccessity or else due to breed "sprollie" pointless in trying to attempt housework)
bathroom de-contaminated
downstair loo de-contaminated
washing don,dry & in correct place
dinner cooked & all washed up
entire ironing basket empty
2 episodes of "desperate housewives" off hard-drive (courtesy of ironing, took 2hrs)
& can't take credit for this but can take credit for looking so forlorn that dh went & cut lawn instead

things I was restrained about

dd (age 11) bedroom, for the 4th day in a row have picked up all clean washing & put back on bed instead of doing it myself
kept completely quiet when dh took over kitchen at tea time to bottle 30 bottles of his home made plonk-not a peep :-)

So all in all a productive day "flap flap flap" (imaginary bunting outside house),don't think wil be same tomorrow as house now returned to complete mess but am feeling positive that with the cheery flow from here & actually reading about flying I may just crack this house milarkey :o

Curlyfrizzball · 28/06/2011 21:08

Hello everyone
Can I also join you all? I joined the FlyLady website last week so am very new to all this, but I have managed to shine my sink and keep it relatively shiny (including all washing up done before going to bed) for 4 days now! Not much of an achievement when the rest of our flat is messy, cluttered and not nearly clean enough, but it's a start!
One day I hope to have it to the point where I'm not too embarrassed to invite anyone round!

I work 3.5 days (and paperwork most evenings) and have a 20-month old DD so finding any time to do anything else (except surfing MN of course!) seems impossible. Everyone else seems to manage it though - what am I doing wrong?!...

reastie · 28/06/2011 21:11

evening,

too busy to post during the day but have managed

ta da list:
taken dd to baby class
posted parcels narrowly missing thunder storm
did dhs business banking paperwork and paid in his business money
black leaded the fender on the fireplace
set up the travel cot for dds day time naps down stairs
spent 15 mins decluttering dining room
made dhs sandwiches for work tomorrow
made home made pizza for lunch
cleared/cleaned the decks in kitchen
various phone/email tasks completed (but not all done yet)
short walk down the road in pram to give dd some fresh air
2 loads of washing done
watched and slightly enjoyed 'kirsties home made home' at lunch Blush

still feel like I never get anywhere close to getting done what I want Hmm

Stillchuckingit · 28/06/2011 21:43

Evening ladies

I'm afraid it is going to be a very quick one tonight as dh (who has been working since supper) still needs computer.

A warm welcome to Curlyfrizzball!! You are not doing anything wrong!! It's just called life (particularly with a l.o.)!! And it IS an achievement to have the motivation to start to turn things around ... I'm certain you'll find the system helpful (just don't be put off by barftastic language on the Flylady site) Any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Reastie that's one impressive ta da list!! Well done!! Don't be hard on yourself - you are doing really well - small steps remember, small steps ...

THACA am liking this new invention, the "restrained about" list!! I REALLY need to start keeping one (particularly in 32°C heat!!) Your ta da list is v. impressive too - as is yours Toffee - in fact you are all putting me to shame today.

[I dunno - the heat just got to me this evening - it was extremely oppressive - I only got through half my tasks and then settled to 13 games of Connect Four with dd. She beat me 8 games to 3 and she is only 7!!!]

Arf at your imaginary bunting THACA

Toffee well done for battling through!!!! LOL at "mess monster" [My floor is also covered in Playmobil ...but it is staying there tonight I'm afraid]

Right, dh champing at the bit (as it were) so back in a mo with steps and will catch up with everyone else tomorrow!!

OP posts:
BartletForAmerica · 28/06/2011 21:44

toffee, I love the idea of the 'mess monster'. I think he sometimes visits here too. Grin

thehusband, curly, welcome! You don't need to read or get the emails if you don't want to. Stillchuckingit is very good at keeping us updated with what to do.

Remember, as our guru Flylady says, your house didn't get messy in a day, so it is not going to get better in one! I'd really recommend starting with the Babysteps.

reastie, you have done LOADS today. Well done. When you say that you don't get close to doing what you want to do, are we talking chores or fun things here? I keep meaning to spend 15 minutes a day on piano practice - never going to pass Grade 1 if I don't practise!

Stillchuckingit · 28/06/2011 21:51

***

Your baby-step for tomorrow, Wednesday 29th June, is here and worth doing if you can possibly fit it in.

here is this week's pamper mission!!

Tomorrow and up to and including June 30, we will be in Zone 5, the living room here

And your mission (5 mins attending to your "knick knacks" apparently) will appear here once the Flylady site has updated itself.

However, sneak peak can be seen here

Wednesday is anti-procrastination day and boy do I need one of those.

Must go - dh impatient to start work again - and dd (who hasn't really gone to sleep properly yet) is terrified of lightening and rather big claps of thunder currently passing over our house)

See you in the morning!

Ohh Bartlett remind me to ask you about starting piano lessons tomorrow

G'night all

Aooohhh Shock that was a BIG bang

and here comes the rain .....

OP posts:
Thehusbandsatcricketagain · 28/06/2011 21:59

eeekkkk only 5 mins to dust decorative items.........how can this happen,it takes me 5 mins to go to cupboard & dig about for lemon oil polish !!!!

reastie · 28/06/2011 21:59

bartlet I mean chores - never get the house spick and span no matter how hard I try and means I feel guilty sitting down and doing something I want as there's always housework to do and I feel a bit like dh works all day in his job and it's my 'job' to look after dd and keep the house clean and tidy and I never quite manage the latter as well as I want to Blush . GL on the piano practice - I really want a piano in our house as grew up with musical parents and it rubbed off on me. one day.....

LadyInPink · 28/06/2011 22:11

Sorry i have been awol, I have been up to my eyes with DD birthday (twas yesterday) as had her party on Sat - went really well, a disco in a hall with 30 children. Made cakes Friday for her Rainbows class and then more yesterday for her schoolmates plus more for her drama class last evening too. The 'club penguin' cake worked out beautifully and was much admired, hated cutting into it though Sad and she was involved in a poetry competition (on her b'day too) yesterday which was probably more stressful for me than her it seemed as she took it in her stride.

House a tip though managed to clear all wrapping paper away, and put some of her new things in its rightful place. Work has kept me busy too but i am booked in to have a facial on Thursday which was a b'day pressie from mil from beginning of last month so i will love that.

Hope you are all okay and that some of you in England have had a thunderstorm to clear this muggy humid air (bloody flying ants are rife here), we haven't down in the South as yet.

See you all again soon Smile

BlueEyeshadow · 28/06/2011 22:46

Erk! Why did I look at that pamper mission link?? Now my eyes are burning with the pinkness... Shock

Ta-da!
Washing out
Posted parcels
Got glasses fixed
Changed skirt in M&S
Toddlers with DS2
Afternoon's work
Got washing in before the storm
Cooked tea for boys and curry for us
Dishwasher
Swish & swipe
Swept kitchen floor (x loads)

I think I need a "being restrained about" list too - had a major falling out with DS1 at lunchtime due to us both being too hot and him needing a bloodsugar boost. :(

To do:
Post letter
Music
B&Q for sealant to keep the blasted ants out - they're regrouping. :(
Change beds
Tidy bedroom
filing
Dusting - inc nicknacks mission
Declutter sitting room
Work - inc various emails

Hi to Curlyfrizzball and Lady - I'm glad the cake worked out well.
Waves and yawns. Night all.

Morning fledglings

[props eyes open with match sticks]

Didn't get to sleep until 3am here it was so stuffy. Lightening was bouncing off our terrace rather alarmingly. Thankfully very cool and fresh this morning.

Determined to crack on today and finish yesterday's list and start a new one!!

I know THSCA I have some silver photograph frames that need polishing - that's at least a 15 min job. We do sometimes have "ishews" with the timing Flylady allocates to things. Many people on here (including myself) find home blessing (bleeurgggh) difficult to get done in one hour for example.

You'll get there Reastie!! As Fat Fairy says herself, it may take 9 mths, but you'll do it!! (My house was a veritable pit before I started Flying and although there's still loads to be done, the system really does work. You just (counter-intuitively sometimes I know) have to lighten up on yourself and be patient, whilst at the same time doing the routines and steps every day. I think the Flylady theory is that if you worry that you are behind, then that negativity will adversely affect your motivation and you can get bogged done (or some'at like that anyway)!!

Well done Pink- the cake and party sound amazing! Am very impressed by your baking bonanza. Good to see you are taking step 29 seriously!! You deserve it after all of that!

Top flying marks Blue You are on a roll!

Right, best get cracking! Have a productive day everyone now its cooler out there.

Can't believe it, but it's time to think about next month's thread. That went quickly didn't it??

Any volunteers??? Any suggestions for titles???

I will be travelling for parts of July and August and when I'm not, will have hoards of visitors staying but happy to volunteer again for September.

Erratum

Er, that should have read bogged down not bogged done! Grin

And some appalling maths demonstrated in last night's post.
I played 13 games of Connect Four. DD won 8 and I won 5!! (hum, Blush)

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 29/06/2011 08:08

Morning all,

Sympathies re the lack of sleep SC - it's far too hot here as well and the DC keep complaining that they can't get to sleep because of the heat. Going for a run in these temperatures was possibly not the most sensible of ideas but I didn't want to leave it too long... My legs now feel like jelly and I could quite happily collapse for the rest of the morning, but I need to make sure I'm ready for the two English lessons later on and then start doing something - anything! - about the state of the house. I have the feeling that two hours won't be enough.

Was it ellie who volunteered to do July? I'm sure that someone did. I won't be able to volunteer this time I'm afraid, as we'll be away for about half of July and for a couple of weeks in August too, but am happy to provide back-up when I am here.

Welcome to Curlyfrizzball and an exhausted wave to everyone else! Smile

reastie · 29/06/2011 08:16

sc i always lose connect 4 Blush - just dont think i have the right sort of brain Hmm

much fresher here this morning thank goodness

ladyinpink what a lot of cake making . Grin

not looking forward to today - to do list includes dds jabs and a coil fitting for me Confused . going to take it gentle today I think but would really like to polish the leather sofa properly. I used to take pride in giving it a proper polish every 3 months....but since getting pg I haven't done it now for over a year Blush

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/06/2011 09:15

Morning all,

Have scanned all your posts but no time for personals. Feeling more cheerful now, the air here really cleared overnight on Monday so it has been much fresher for the last 24 hours, we had thunderstorms yesterday lunchtime but it is a lovely day today.

I went out and ran 5km last night [proud emoticon], the first time I have managed it, normally I run for half an hour, but had only managed around 3.8k in that time. I decided to go for 5k and see how long it would take, left it late till it was nice and cool and picked a levelish course, it took about 40 mins, will need to increase speed next. Was feeling inspired by your weekend efforts Linzer!

Totally agree about home bleurrgh taking more than an hour, I did at least 2 hours of it on Monday and still didn't hoover upstairs, I don't think my levels of pre-bleurrgh tidiness are quite up to FLylady standards. However house looks nice now. Off to work in a minute, catch up later.

I could do July if no one else has volunteered, but not August.

BartletForAmerica · 29/06/2011 09:55

Good morning.

WhoKnows, well done on the run. I've been doing a bit of Couch to 5K (had bad SPD during pregnancy so getting back into it gently), so I was quite inspired.

Still, the lightning sounds amazing (if scary). Hope the air clears a bit today. I'm not doing piano lessons at the moment, but am using a "teach yourself" book for adults - or I would be if I practised.

reastie, hope your DD is fine with her vaccinations today and doesn't get too grumpy tonight.

ColdHeartedBitch · 29/06/2011 10:33

Morning. Right am starting a fresh. No to do list from hell. Have been on mn far too long though this morning. And not helped by a late night my own fault and an early start ds up at 4am

Wish list:
Do a couple of loads of laundry
Fold washing as done
get ironing up to date
put clothes away
Tidy ds' room.

I have caffine so that is a start. 5 more mins on here and then i am going to get on with flying. I hope.

Stillchuckingit · 29/06/2011 10:41

um, erratum again as erratum below should have been errata. Confused Anyway ...

Linzer and whoknows well done on your jogging/running! V. v. impressive.

Reastie Hope vaccinations go ok for your dd and good luck with coil. I am scheduled to have this done in a fortnight or so, so (very selfishly) would be v. interested to hear how it goes.

Linzer will check back and look at last thread but thanks Whoknows for offer to volunteer.

Bartlett You are off to a v. good start today - good luck with the rest of your list and well done to your dh for helping. Interested in starting piano myself (in a bid to lure back dd's interest but have wanted to do it for myself for a while). First - need to buy second-hand piano. Second, is it really feasible for a 47 year old who can only read music a tiny bit, to learn to play the piano from scratch reasonably competently, or am I whistling in the wind????

Lord, dd due back at 12.30pm, better get my skates on. Don't feel so great today it has to be said: dizzy when I bend down. Disappointing.

I'm happy to do Roundups, but just can't do links. What about just a weekly thread for the summer, with the zone area, and regular baby steps link at beginning of each thread? Possibly we are all at different stages anyway of the babysteps, so just a general link might work alright?

Plumber is here, dismantling the hall (in the best possible taste)
My friend has left after overnight stay.
There was a lingering smell of something horrible yesterday: I scrubbed bin, I shut fridge quickly, I put it down to the poached haddock...
then when friend left I found ON TOP OF THE FRIDGE SOME OLD STEW THAT DH HAD TAKEN OUT OF FRIDGE ON SAT! [aargh - holds nose]
felt most upset that my two friends had sat in "the house of pong" for a whole evening - very cross with dh this morning, don't move things out of the fridge without consulting ME Grin

also helped a bit with fete bric a brac this morning
three children to school with sports colours
persuaded ds2 to do his book review on Wimpy Kid
recycling (more house of pong emoticon]
kerbside rubbish
hung out washing

Reastie hope jabs alright, and have a very calm afternoon on sofa rather than polishing it

Whoknows brilliant on run too!
SC sorry for jangled night
Linzer I cleared the sitting room, cleaned decluttered dusted etc, for overnight guest to sleep in, but now the PLAYROOM is full of sitting room junk - really I cannot solve the mess problem either....another whole wave of hot spots seems to have hit me...HmmSad and I thought I was going to do something other than tidying today....

BlueEyeshadow · 29/06/2011 11:21

Ugh. A bad start to the day, so why am I on MN and not starting my work??!

ColdHeartedBitch · 29/06/2011 11:21

I can do links if you like Swan. Not so good at getting around to the round ups. Happy to double team if you like

Must remember not to get caught up in bun fight threads first thing. Must save for later reading or nothing gets done Blush

LinzerTorte · 29/06/2011 11:37

Phew, thought I'd lost my post when I got the "offline for an upgrade" message, but must have pressed Ctrl + C automatically!

The house is going from bad to worse; had absolutely no time to deal with it this morning as ended up spending quite a long time on the phone to a friend, and only just managed to get both English lessons prepared in time. Have just struggled home on the bike with two big bags full of the DDs' old school books, my bag of stuff for the English lesson, DD1's school bag (DD2 carried her own) and a huge bunch of flowers that the two classes gave me - I'm surprised I didn't topple over!

CHB and swan You will be a dream team. Grin

WhoKnows Well done on the run; you are my inspiration! It took me almost 30 minutes to do 3.8k today; I'm so glad I didn't have to do the race in this heat as I would definitely have come last!

SC I had a coil fitted a couple of months ago and am really happy I made the switch - feel much better for it and absolutely no problems so far. I'll PM you as I don't want to overwhelm the thread with TMI!

reastie Hope the fitting goes well - you should definitely take it easy afterwards (it was a good excuse for me to spend the rest of the morning with a book in the garden!). My gynae advised me to go home, take some painkillers and take it easy for the rest of the day; I found that I didn't actually need any painkillers, but certainly wasn't up to doing anything energetic!

Must go and get lunch ready now - we've got a busy afternoon ahead of us with DD2 at ballet, then piano rehearsal and finally the DDs' piano concert in the evening.

Thehusbandsatcricketagain · 29/06/2011 11:48

Aaaaahhhh just spent ages typing a post & it asked me to log in & then my post vanished.

Ok I tried to read flying page last night but seems to be in an alien language so will try again when not so tired.

ta da so far
actually put some makeup on
put all last nights dishes away

to do list today
strip our bed (nasty wiffs this am from sheets)
find clean uniform for DD music concert tomorrow night
find babysitter for music concert tomorrow night (ooops, forgot)
walk dog
put all yesterdays ironing away
mop kitchen floor (DH bottled his homemade plonk last night,no explanations needed there)
attend fairtrade lunch meeting after school (stupidly volunteered)
attempt to re-read the concept of flying

Still can't complain have been out this morning investigating a wee business venture a couple of us are interested in setting up & DH is out till 10ish (the clue to his whereabouts is in my nickname) so have plenty of time to attempt to catch up today :o

Wll update later on what was achieved & have to say am thoroughly enjoying reading the posts on here (sound of me switching laptop off)
