I did it yonks ago (origional threads Wink) , have drunk alot of tea slipped since then and really want to start it again as it really seemed to work for me :) I am going to blitz as much as I can before the 1st (tree/decs away tonight etc.) so I am starting as much as I can with a clean sheet :) Anyone a lapsed flyer (or whatever we call ourselves) or wants to be a domestic goddess (Hmm) as of the 1st? OMG!

SilveryMoon · 07/02/2011 18:55

This is what i struggled with last time I did this.
The missions are great and do get you doing bits that you might not normally do, but, for example, there is no mission telling you to clean the chip pan, so when do I do that?

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 19:00

How often would flylady have us do the detailed cleaning?
I have to say I don't feel I am living in squalor despite living in total ignorance of that list!

I have adapted missions that just don't seem relevant to me and I definitely want to adapt my daily focus.

I may need to have a second double decker now - in deep shock!

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 19:05

Ok, I have read it a bit more carefully. This is for those of us who have finished the decluttering stage. Phew!

I will be decluttering for a loooooong time so I will put that nightmare to the back of my mind for now.

I suspect some of us may be ready for it now though.

So when we are told what zone we are on, is this what we are supposed to be doing?

SilveryMoon · 07/02/2011 19:11

carrots The way I understand it, this week we are in the kitchen, so before friday we need to complete the daily missions, do all detailed cleaning, plus daily focus (which I don't do) and the routines etc picked up in babysteps.......

bessie26 · 07/02/2011 19:19

lalalala I'm not listening!

bessie26 · 07/02/2011 19:52

Yeah, I reckon we'll have to do the "detailed cleaning" in every zone, so we'll be giving the bathroom a thorough clean once a month, which actually seems reasonable (it should be easy to do remember, coz we'll have kept the mess under control with our babysteps & weekly stuff.

If you think about what's in this new list it's not actually too bad for example

Clean cobwebs
Dust window sills and front door
Clean switch plate of hand prints and walls if needed
Put plants in to the shower and give them a good rinse. Let me set there until you are finished.
Dust furniture
Dust baseboards
Straighten the coat closest
Sweep vacuum or mop the floor
Put back the plants. You would hate for DH to walk into a jungle tomorrow morning. LOL
Add your own personal touches to make it more welcoming.

That whole list is just a long winded way of saying vacuum, mop, dust, hang up the coats & water the plants! We can do that! Can't we?

Anyway, like carrots, I'm still decluttering so will try to do some of it, but (as with kelly's missions) won't fret when if I don't manage it all!

SilveryMoon · 07/02/2011 20:03

Suppose so.
Maybe the 15 mins a day you guys are decluttering can be replaced by 15 mins a day of detailed clean.

I've just washed out my kitchen bin and wiped down the wall in that area and the side of the fridge/freezer (which the bin lives next to)

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 20:28

I have eaten many Maltesers and feel a bit a calmer now.

What you are both saying makes sense. When I think about what I have done today the only bits I would have left out would be showering the plants, dusting the skirting boards and the mopping (which I should have done anyway). The only plants I have are herbs in the kitchen so that is not a big deal.

We can do it bessie Wink

bessie26 · 07/02/2011 21:17

I washed the inside of the bin last week, so I decided not to do that again. Did 15mins in the spare room, which is mainly full of stuff from the dining room.

carrots sounds like it was a good call by you to not mop the floor! Are you mainly decluttering your chocolate stash today? Wink

silvery How often do you need to clean a chip pan? Could you add it to the detailed cleaning list for your kitchen zone?

so dyls and curly - are you adding detailed cleaning to your routines??

I'm off for a soak in the bath now, I've got a nightmare week at work ahead of me, so really must get to bed at a reasonable time tonight!

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 21:28

bessie choc stash nice and empty now. Sad Feel a bit sick Wink

SharonGless · 07/02/2011 21:59

OH MY GOD
Detailed cleaning

I think I want to declutter forever!

Can't believe you didn't save any choccie for me!

Well as usual when working have only managed basics. however DH is currently clearing out sideboard in dining room which has been his sole contribution to decluttering so far.

Hotspots done and daily routine plus load of washing this morning and one in now. Off tomorrow so need to decide what to prioritise

Carrotsandcelery · 07/02/2011 22:27
Carrotsandcelery · 08/02/2011 11:26

Ok this is what we could get up to today, should we feel inclined <a class="break-all" href="//tflylady.net/pages/FlightPlan_Detail.aspo." rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this weeks detailed cleaning

Today's mission from Kelly

today's daily focus

Alternatively we can just do our baby steps and eat chocolate!

I have been on slow mo today. I have put on some washing and emptied the dishwasher and, strangely enough, given Kelly's mission, just scrubbed the kitchen worktops.

Hoover is out to try and unearth the kitchen after yesterday's craft explosion - and then I will do a basic mop!

What is everyone else doing today? Is anyone going to go for the detailed cleaning?

bessie26 · 08/02/2011 12:13

I'm at work today, wed & thur, so won't even be thinking about any detailed cleaning until Friday. I have every confidence in you & look forward to hearing how you all get on! Grin

SharonGless · 08/02/2011 13:11

I actually don't think the detailed cleaning list is that bad other than the oven bit. I really can't face doing mine. In fact am really considering paying£40 for someone to come and do it for me! Is that really really bad of me?

Microwave - done
Fridge - done on Sat when weekly shop was done
Windows - done this morning
Pet dishes - done this morning
Under sink - did couple weeks ago when decluttering

So really for the week I still have to do the extractor hood, front of cupboards and fingerprints off walls and its only Tuesday Wink

Took DD to park so she is fairly quiet now so I got time to do the bits in the kitchen plus she likes to "help" me do the windows.

Off to get birthday presents/cards for Feb now as have quite a few.

Back later

Carrotsandcelery · 08/02/2011 13:56

The list isn't that bad once you take a breath and look at it calmly. I also need to get my head round the idea that I have a whole week to do it - so it doesn't need to be done in one go.

Microwave - done
Fridge - done on Saturday before the weekly shop
Windows - done a couple of weeks ago and still gleaming
Pet dishes - done on a very regular basis anyway
Under sink - did it yesterday and felt very smug about it until I realised it was on the list Shock
Extractor hood - all clean apart from grill which is in the dishwasher - hope it survives Hmm
Cupboard fronts - half way through
Light difusing bowls - don't have any Grin
Clean oven - have never in my life done this and have no idea how but it doesn't look too bad to me. Grin
Wipe fingerprints off wall - all cupboard fronts so that doesn't really count either

Straighten drawers and cupboards - this is the one which scares me - this could take me weeks! How thoroughly does this need to be done?
I did a few at the end of last week but there are still loads to do and they are all full. Do I just do as many of them as I can this week? Presumably by the time this next comes around I can work on the rest? Any suggestions?

SharonGless · 08/02/2011 20:08

Well done Carrots - see you are flying!!

It does say you don't need to do detailed cleaning until you have finished decluttering. I feel like I want to deep clean though too so think I might go for it but still keep decluttering along the way. So would probably do as much in the drawers as I could this week thenleave it until next time it comes round

How is everyone else doing today?

Carrotsandcelery · 08/02/2011 20:47

That makes sense Sharon. I started on the cupboards as I thought I could double it with my decluttering. I went for an easy one and emptied, cleaned and sorted my cook books. I took out all the ones I don't think I use and have boxed them. If I never go looking for them then they can go to the charity shop.

How is everyone getting on today?

Curlybrunette · 08/02/2011 20:53

Hmmmm detailed cleaning....I think I'd been subconsciously aware that we weren't doing that but was happy to ignore it! I'll look at the link now.

I've done a good clean of the shower cubicle today, the bathroom had a proper clean the day before I started flylady and the swish and swipe has kept it looking great except I don't tend to wipe the inside of the cubicle so it did need a clean.

I've bleached my bins and wipe the front of the fridge, freezer, grill and oven.

I think I sort of get round to doing all the jobs but not always in the right order. I don't mind that really, since flylady I've done more cleaning than I ever have (please don't think my house was totally gross it wasn't honestly Hmm !)

I've come to realise what you can get done in a few minutes whereas before I'd have though 'oh well I've only got 10 minutes there's no point starting a job'

bessie26 · 08/02/2011 21:23

oooh, haven't you all been busy! - I am very impressed!

curly I was exactly the same about not doing anything coz I "only had 10 minutes" - I decluttered my dressing table & the top of my chest of drawers while I was running a bath last night Grin

I think the detailed cleaning list would look alot nicer if she hadn't TYPED IT ALL IN CAPITALS!

But like you say carrots, it's not actually that bad once you look at it calmly - I always clean the cat food bowls & wipe down most of the cupboard fronts when I mop the floor, so they won't take long & DH cleans the top of the oven every weekend so that never gets that dirty.

What do you think she means by "WASH CANISTER/KNICK-KNACKS" ?

Have you ladies heard of "oven pride"? I've never used it, but have seen quite a few people on here raving about it - it's only about £4 so think I will get some in next time we do a supermarket shop.

I'm off to clean the microwave now before I do my bedtime routine.

Curlybrunette · 08/02/2011 21:38

I think I've used ovenpride before, if it's the one i'm thinking of you get a big plastic bag thing which you put all your shelves and baking trays in and leave it to soak for a while. It was really good and brought everything up shiny again but it doesn't clean the oven itself.

x

bessie26 · 08/02/2011 22:18

Ooh, sounds like it might work for me then - my oven is "self cleaning" which means you put it on high for a bit (I've only done it once so can't remember exact details), let it cool down & then just wipe down the inside of the oven! It seemed to work really well, but I don't think our oven really gets that dirty as we never cook any messy spitty meat in it (vegetables are much better behaved!)

Cleaning the microwave took at most 5 mins -why have I been putting it off for so long?!

Carrotsandcelery · 08/02/2011 22:22

bessie I took Canisters and Knick Knacks to be the tea and coffee jars by the kettle and any other things that sit out in the kitchen (eg my Mum has a windowsill full of porcelain ducks in her kitchen Hmm)
We only have a toaster, kettle and fruit bowl so I just gave them all a clean.

I also agree that the trick is to do a lot of it in stolen moments eg wipe some cupboard fronts while you wait for toast to pop, declutter the desk while the kettle boils.

The idea that everything doesn't have to be done at once eg I can do 2 cupboard fronts now and 2 later, is a revelation to me.

I might have a go at the oven pride too - won't shop til Saturday though and the dcs are off school for half term after tomorrow so I suspect progress will be a little slower.

Curlybrunette · 09/02/2011 10:27

Morning all,

Wow I'm never the first here! i'll attempt to link on the daily mission but it doesn't seem to work for me (must contact MN techies for help):

Wednesday

Today's kitchen mission is:
Grab those toothbrushes and get ready! Yep! You guessed it! Get an OLD toothbrush and some soap and scrub those kitchen sink faucets!
You will be amazed at how much gunk and grime will come off around
the handles! You shine your sink everyday but today we are going to make those faucets sparkle! While you are at it take that soap, toothbrush and scrub your rings that you are wearing that have gotten grungy and make them sparkle too!

I've cleaned all the worktops, cupboard fronts and the above toothbrush/sink thingy (as well as my morning routine) so feel pretty good today.

I also did the microwave, you are so right Bessie it does only take a few minutes!

Carrots I also feel quite terrified about sorting the cupboards out. I have a big cupboard food cupboard that has got so much in it. Baking ingredients, crisps, tea, coffee, pasta, beans etc. etc. I've been thinking for ages I need to organise it better. Not today though, at the weekend I'll have a really good go at it.

Wednesday is my childfree morning so I've got a couple of hours on my own but really need to settle down and do some work now. At least I've done some jobs and can feel good its done.

Have a good day all
x
