Or maybe some greenery and warm lights hanging from the ceiling above the table.. cox and Cox may also do some nice bits that will soften and warm up your look

Milkmani · 11/02/2024 19:35

@custard3point14 Don’t despair, not everyone has the same taste. From the different links you have posted you tend to steer towards glitzier home decor and that’s okay if you like it :) If you want it less glitzy I would go for rattan under plate chargers or a rattan or black wood tray for the middle of the table? You could even go for a planter centre piece. Maybe go for an off white on the walls or a warm grey/griege rather blush the tone isn’t quite right with the coolness of your table, chairs and carpet. Just an FYI marble stains easily, do you know if it has been protected? If not definitely put mats down for your children or it will be a bolognaise stained nightmare before you know it. Also mug rings - big yes to coasters as the mug rings from coffee and tea are quick to stain and hard to get out.

These chargers are Oka, pricey yes but lots of great inspiration on their website and you can easily find cheaper alternatives online

A planter centre piece, this one is artificial but you could make your own with real orchids and moss if you prefer real plants.

A centre tray like this?

or this?

I know these are expensive but lots of alternatives available online at a cheaper price. The expensive websites are good for ideas and then you can source things else where on Facebook or eBay - both are great for Oka, India Jane and Brissi homeward which would fit with your marble table. Our homes are a place where we can express our personal taste. I wouldn’t worry about the comments, bet loads of their home are grim or just copy and pasted from Instagram following the latest trends.

Rattan Underplate | OKA

A lovely alternative to traditional placemats, these woven rattan underplates will compliment and enhance any china whilst fully protecting the table surface beneath.

Cushions in a couple of the chairs to break up the grey?

Fedupwitheveryone · 11/02/2024 19:38

OP just stick with it. Buy a couple of big palm trees in nice pots for the corners of the room, some low vases of flowers on the table and embrace the maximalist vibe.
It's not my taste but i've seen far worse. the chairs look comfortable and i'd happy spend a night drinking wine at at dinner party in there.

We can't all make the right decisions all of the time, so don't sweat it :-)

diddl · 11/02/2024 19:41

Yup!

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 11/02/2024 19:45

It's not to my taste but I don't live with you.

I mean, it's a table. When it's got crockery and the like on it, it'll look less weird. Or when it's covered in shite that your kids never put away Grin.

And 'tacky' is an opinion used by rude people.

DiamondGazette · 11/02/2024 19:48

I think it's a perfectly nice table and I love the glittery carpet. People have different tastes and some people can be very rude. I wouldn't be brave enough to post photos of my house on here because I know my decor and furnishings would be mocked and sneered at. I love them though and that's what matters. It's my home.

Waxlyrically · 11/02/2024 19:51

I think it looks much nicer in daylight and I prefer it to the old table. I’d live with it for a bit and if it still annoyed me buy a new tablecloth. Definitely give it a chance!

Sageyboots · 11/02/2024 19:57

Unless you have a smaller room in the house that needs a new carpet?. You could get the grey one relaid in another room and get a sea grass or similar rug to go over the tiles in the conservatory. That would preserve the carpet from fading and people traipsing grass etc on it in the summer months too

ClumsyNinja · 11/02/2024 20:09

I’ve got white marble kitchen worktops and they stain far too easily. Just be careful to wipe up any spills immediately. I’d put a tablecloth on it when it’s not being used for a nice dinner party.

DaBlackCatsAreDaBestCats · 11/02/2024 20:12

I’ve seen worse

Mirabai · 11/02/2024 20:25

It’s definitely not my taste, rather than trying to tone it down why not embrace it? Buy a silver candelabra, some fairy lights and fuck ‘em.

NewHouseNewMe · 11/02/2024 20:33

For me, it is the combination of a very strong carpet colour (almost slate grey) with the equally strong chairs and a marble table.

Personally I’d keep the table and carpet and consider changing the chairs either to a mix of colours (pink, green, patterned, one or two grey) and then put some nice things around the sides to break it up.

I don’t think the original pine table worked either with the carpet.

Yup sorry.

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 20:38

@custard3point14 Don't worry - there's just a lot of people posting who have neither taste nor manners!

NewHouseNewMe · 11/02/2024 20:38

Even chairs like this might work better.

But don’t fret because it actually doesn’t look bad at all. Some nice centrepieces and objets around the room would help.

I keep clicking on your pics Op & the more I do the more I like it all!

custard3point14 · 11/02/2024 19:01

The carpet was £600 and fitted just before Christmas 😢🤦🏼‍♀️ see why I could cry. I always try and fail.

There are as many (if not more) comments saying that it looks unfinished and how to improve it. Add some colour and some plants, dress the windows (conservatories do look stark without something in the windows).

This is much more practical than the table you had before. And a lot of the time you will have a wipe clean table cloth on to protect it from food spills.

pictoosh · 11/02/2024 18:59

This is not directed at the OP in particular...but how is it that people don't understand that if you put a lot of grey into a room in Britain it's going to look rather dismal for much of the time?

Soft greys do well in the south of France, say, where they have sunshine to counteract the muted grey tones which in turn, are not as blinding as white tones. It works.
In an average British home the grey simply reflects and extends the overcast weather outside. Bringing the uninspiring outdoors, indoors. It's not classy, it's drab.

Worst interior fad ever.

I’ve never liked grey decor and when it was on trend I couldn’t find anything I liked as everything was bloody grey!

We were moving house and one property had every room decorated in shades of grey. My DD called it the “House of Sadness” as the grey everywhere was so dismal 😂😂

I think OP if you’d posted this a while back when full-on grey was more popular, you’d have gotten more mixed views.

I don’t like grey (or marble) so it’s utterly pointless me giving my opinion as our styles are so different. You’d hate my style - it’s very rustic!

The point is, everyone is different and even if everyone else hates your style it doesn’t matter. Your house is for you.

The carpet looks warm and cosy. The chairs are very comfy (I’ve sat in very similar!) The table is perfect for Lego (very flat with no bumps like a more rustic table would have). Practically they’re excellent choices so don’t feel bad.

There are loads of low cost ideas in here to make it a bit less grey. I think that’s all you need to completely change the feel of the room.

Ideas I liked: table runner, colourful table centre piece, big plant, place mats, maybe a rug to break up the grey? Colourful chair cushions?

If you’re feeling adventurous a PP suggestion to rub down and change the colour of the legs is great,

Don’t despair. Think of this as a starting point, a base upon which you can build a beautiful room with some well-chosen non-grey, coloured additions. I bet it will look completely different when you’re finished.

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 11/02/2024 20:49

It does look slightly better in the second photo.

I think what's happened is that all 3 events are statement pieces:

  1. The carpet
  2. The table
  3. The chairs

I think at least one if not two needs to be altered.

I think the chairs are too low to work with a table like that - something with a higher back would work better.

It's also lacking a splash of colour.

Carpet with a large table like that also clashes. The table is cold bit the carpet is warm. It would look better on a wooden or even tiled floor.

Runnerinthenight · 11/02/2024 20:50

I love the table and think it would look much better with strong coloured chairs, something like these:

https://www.next.co.uk/style/ST505271/U75069?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA_aGuBhACEiwAly57MegTi8yaSSbWKX8vDga6xZONGCUEwFDC1TkTKt3GQ3uECTDYXR3PnhoC8gwQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds#U75069

Could you return the chairs? I guess returning a table isn't easy - but honestly, it's a lovely table! I like modern style but equally I don't think marble is going to date?

I hate pine with a passion though. It's so much nicer than what you had! Everything was pine when we first bought our house! I'm still getting rid of the last of it even now!

I don’t think the original pine table worked either with the carpet.

Alternatively if she got rid of the carpet the table and chairs would look a lot quieter. But she paid £600 for it, why would she get rid of it.

I’m sure she can make peace with it all.

ttcat37 · 11/02/2024 19:18

Perhaps if OP doesn’t want to hear that her decor is horrible she shouldn’t start a post saying “this is horrible isn’t it?” and then get upset when people say yes, it’s horrible

The op asked for comments on the table, not for rude remarks about the rest of the room. It's always clear when someone is a keyboard warrior though who wouldn't say this to someone's face. 🙄

Su55anr · 11/02/2024 20:58

I think it’s really nice. I’d rather have something on trend than a wood ‘rustic’ type dining set that looks old from the start. Some people say buy once and buy best you can and it’ll last a lifetime. I can’t think of nothing worse than choosing furniture for that long. Please Do Not put a tablecloth on it, even my gran wouldn’t use a tablecloth these days

RosaCaramella · 11/02/2024 21:01

I think the table is fine but I’m not a fan of the chairs or carpet although I’m sure they are very comfortable.
I’d replace the chairs with something more refined - pale wooden / painted white or cream or even metal chairs.
If you like the chairs and carpet, just put a tablecloth over the table or put more ornaments or plants on it. 😊
