@custard3point14 I think if it were me I would swap out the flooring and keep that table. As a PP suggested you need a wood effect LVT (or even a stone floor but it may not be warm enough). If you have different flooring that table would be lovely. Its just the combo of the two that doesn't work

GrouchyKiwi · 11/02/2024 19:04

Agree with PPs. Get some plants in there, live with it for a little while, it's honestly not as bad as some (horrible) people are making out.

If you wanted, you could get some fabric swatches in different colours - teal, pinks, russet, mustard, navy - and see what you like best with the overall look to warm it up. A mix of some of those colours would look great too.

I don’t get the hate. It doesn’t look awful at all. I would love to see the houses of all the people saying it looks terrible

Why, so you could recoil in horror at houses with colour and personality?

Anjea · 11/02/2024 19:09

RomeoandJomeo · 11/02/2024 18:42

Absolutely hideous.... goes well with the rest of the room.

Has that made you feel nice and warm inside?

BlueGrey1 · 11/02/2024 19:09

is the rest of the house furnished in a similar style?

The cheapest and biggest change you could make to the room would be to change the carpet to a lighter grey ( similar to colour of chairs), this would lighten up the room and give it a more cohesive look, it would tie it all together

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 11/02/2024 19:10

You are never ever ever ever (add a bunch more evers!) going to have taste that everyone loves, it’s just not going to happen for anyone. (And then there’s generally a bunch of bitchy responses on a mn thread for the sake of it)

What’s important is that YOU like it and I get the feeling that you like the carpet and chairs but not the table. Firstly, unless you have the opportunity to return it, live with it for a bit, it’s a huge difference to the last one so give yourself some time to get used to it, then add something like a table cloth or runner, put something on it as a centrepiece style.

If you still don’t like it in a few months then sell it and buy something else, you should enjoy the space you live in but don’t jump the gun

ttcat37 · 11/02/2024 19:12

It’s hideous but it matches the hideous chairs and even more hideous carpet

kalokagathos · 11/02/2024 19:12

Katie Price / Essex vibes to me 🫣

GrouchyKiwi · 11/02/2024 19:12

Also: get on Pinterest and see how other people have accessorised marble tables, etc. You might find some colour and textile ideas that appeal to you that way.

Unlike your personality which is apparently delightful 🙄

NewKingontheBlock · 11/02/2024 19:13

You haven’t failed OP, honestly please don’t let these nasty comments upset you, I know it’s hard, there is another thread I am on, a poster is feeling inferior because she visited a 2 million pound house which was apparently beautiful and the owner was also slim and well presented, posters have piled on saying the house must be soulless show home and they much prefer their cluttered messy tiny houses, they have also given the owner a character assassination, she must be deeply unhappy, be neurotic, anxious, have a miserable existence etc, all these comments even though there are no pictures of the house and they have no idea about the woman who owns it, it’s just a chance to give strangers a kicking because they are so deeply unhappy with their lot in life, contented people have no need to that, just listen to the constructive comments and ignore the rest, they are really not worth your head space.

Peanutsnanna · 11/02/2024 19:14

I would change the carpet to a hard flooring and live with the table and chairs for a while. You must know that asking this sort of question on Mumsnet leaves you very open to blunt answers.

IsaidIwouldAndIwill · 11/02/2024 19:15

It's ugly and common, as are the chairs and carpet. Why would anyone have carpet in a dining area??

Aria999 · 11/02/2024 19:16

The table isn't really my style but I think the real problem is the chairs. Too big and too grey.

Christy135 · 11/02/2024 19:17

I think it goes with the carpet and chairs.
Not my style, but nothing wrong with it.

ttcat37 · 11/02/2024 19:18

Perhaps if OP doesn’t want to hear that her decor is horrible she shouldn’t start a post saying “this is horrible isn’t it?” and then get upset when people say yes, it’s horrible

HCMM · 11/02/2024 19:19

Actually the carpet seems cosy and will be really warm in winter, maybe a forest green? Loads of places and some willow place mats, coasters etc? I think it would/ does look nice 😊

Houseplanter · 11/02/2024 19:21

OP ignore the deliberately unkind comments. Just vile and unnecessary.

EmpressSoleil · 11/02/2024 19:21

OP please don't take the nasty comments to heart. I can guarantee that if I posted pics of my house here, a few people might like it. Guaranteed, many would hate it and I can only imagine the comments! But they don't live in my house. I do. It really doesn't matter what they think.

The table you've chosen is very practical for the purposes you've described and pp's have said those chairs are comfy which is far more important than them looking a particular way. If people are going to be working/playing/eating there then you want comfort.

If the thread is just making you more upset then I'd leave it. Have what YOU like, not what you think you should or what other people like.

isthismylifenow · 11/02/2024 19:22

custard3point14 · 11/02/2024 19:01

The carpet was £600 and fitted just before Christmas 😢🤦🏼‍♀️ see why I could cry. I always try and fail.

Ok so the carpet has to stay.

It is very different to how it was before with the old table, so anything new is always going to be different and sometimes it can take a little while to get used to.

The positives are that everything is practical. It's warm, table is family friendly and the chairs are comfy. Does it really matter what it looks like to others? Are your friends and family going to come to yours to visit you, or judge your decor? I doubt the latter.

I think this thread has been harsh as you asked people to agree with you in being negative about it.

I'd walk away from the thread now if I were you, and enjoy your new space. If you still dislike it in a year or so (go through all the seasons) then change up wherever necessary.

Naptrappedmummy · 11/02/2024 19:25

Getthethrowonthesofa · 11/02/2024 17:47

Yeah I’m not sure to be honest, I’d not advise that, too heavy and dated for that room.

I agree, I don’t understand people who put heavy dark wood furniture in small spaces. It nearly always looks awful and oppressive. Especially with black metalwork.

Ophy83 · 11/02/2024 19:26

So the carpet looks soft and the table is practical and hard-wearing. I think the whole room just needs homey touches. I would say not the candles from Amazon you selected as there's already a lot of grey metal shades in the room and you want to warm things up. Have a look on the white company website for inspo x

mypafology · 11/02/2024 19:28

Aria999 · 11/02/2024 19:16

I agree with this. If the table has to stay, I'd get some mid century modern style chairs instead, with some colour on them. I'd cover as much of the carpet as possible with a rug, maybe a traditional persian style one, and really lean into an eclectic look. Make sure that nothing else grey or chrome comes into the room...all other touches like plant pots, table runners, place mats etc should be natural materials...it could look quite cool.

IsaidIwouldAndIwill · 11/02/2024 19:15

It's ugly and common, as are the chairs and carpet. Why would anyone have carpet in a dining area??

Because the people that sit at their table are housetrained and don't throw food around.
We've got an oatmeal coloured carpet in our dining room. There's not one stain on it and it's been there for 10 years.

Aria999 · 11/02/2024 19:30

I think it would look quite different with smaller chairs and hard floor plus rug rather than carpet
