What else can I do to this room?

I’ve reclaimed the living room. This is going to be my yoga room & my space for peace and quiet.

What else can I add to it to make it more cosy?

Maybe a rug? I want to buy some cushions but I don’t want them to clash with the hypothetical rug. A throw perhaps?

I have a max budget of £150. Please help!!

It’s a beautiful calm room but I really think it could do with some colour. It feels a bit soul out and bland. If it’s going to be for yoga could you get some Indian fabric cushions. They sell them in tk Maxx for not much? Maybe some books on your shelves?

KnickerlessParsons · 02/01/2023 14:50

I was also going to say colour! Or plants - they are calming.

Bobbybobbins · 02/01/2023 14:50

Agree - colour and plants

TurtleTriplets · 02/01/2023 14:50

I would go for curtains cushions and a rug in a nice colour. I like a dusky pink with grey but someone will probably tell you that's old fashioned or something - I am no fashion designer!

Guavafish1 · 02/01/2023 14:51

A rug

LetUsPonce · 02/01/2023 14:51

I would repaint the walls a warmer colour. To my eye, the tone of the current colour is too "cold"

LetUsPonce · 02/01/2023 14:52

(I appreciate that that is not "adding" to the room however!)

NormalForNuneaton · 02/01/2023 14:52

A rug and vibrant colourful cushions, plus a big green leafy plant on those cases and a trailing plant on the shelves

Whowhatwherewhenwhynow · 02/01/2023 14:52

Oh I really like it. Seems like a fab soace.

Yes I think a rug or a throw and maybe some other pieces (pot/wall decor) that is made of soft/natural texture. At the moment it looks a bit hard and cold.

what is the lighting like?

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 02/01/2023 14:52

A much bigger picture above the fireplace (at least the width of the fireplace opening) - the balance is wrong at the moment.

Flowers, lamps, cushions. Add a light diffuser - nice for calming yoga eg www.johnlewis.com/made-by-zen-mercura-aroma-mist-diffuser/p5100183 (can get much cheaper ones!)

Maybe not curtains if you want to maximise light, but you could hang curtains just for cosiness even if you never close them.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 02/01/2023 14:53

As you said, rug, throw, cushions. Think about different how things feel/look, so that you get a mix of various textures. Get the rug first as it's much easier to find cushions and throw to coordinate with it.

Whether it's soulless or not is very much down to personal preference - many people find pared-back, neutral or 'bland' decor very calming and restful.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 02/01/2023 14:54

Btw for balance that’s pleasing to the eye the clock needs to be hung a little lower - level with the break in the windows. Refer to the golden ratio for picture heights etc - it really makes a difference to the proportions and feel of a space.

LightGreenDot · 02/01/2023 14:56

Move that sound waves print somewhere else and replace with a much bigger piece of art, or a nice framed mirror. Are you creative at all? If so you could have a go at a piece yourself on a canvas.
A rug would be nice, again, go big.
Agree that a plant or two would work well.

It's a lovely room already though. I like your shutters.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 02/01/2023 14:58

Adding plants and low lighting will also make it more hyggelig.

Candles, if you like them, a few more objects d'art.

As pp said the picture above the fireplace definitely needs changing out IMO (unless you're in the process of creating a gallery wall). You can hang it elsewhere on the wall or place it on one of the shelves instead to add further interest to the overall room.

I personally don't think you need to add curtains. I like the sleek look of the blinds. Blankets/throws will do the same job of softening the space.

ouch321 · 02/01/2023 14:58

It's got quite a doctor's waiting room vibe with all the grey. I'm sure it's very Insta trendy and whatnot but it doesn't say home to me. So I'd be painting the walls as step one, sorry.

Spendonsend · 02/01/2023 14:59

I agree that the picture over the fireplace is too small. I also think the clock, whilst useful, would keep reminding me of the time and needing to get on.

I think some plants would be natural and calming but add some colour

If you arent into colourful go texture, so something fluffy, something woven.

LightGreenDot · 02/01/2023 14:59

Ooh also it would make a big difference if you got some cable ties and tidied up the wires behind your TV unit. Sorry to be picky!

DillDanding · 02/01/2023 15:00

That’s a gorgeous room.

Yes to a rug and a large palm or similar, and cushions.

I would add a shelf over the fire place and the picture there needs to be miles bigger (or have a gorgeous mirror).

Lose the clock, that looks all wrong.

The tv stand is terribly dated. I’d replace it with something with drawers.

planefullofotters · 02/01/2023 15:09

I’d lose the cases - they really aren’t adding anything to the space.

BridaBrida · 02/01/2023 15:11

Definitely a rug, throws, cushions and candles. If you don’t like colour then texture is a must. I do think the grey walls and sofa make it cold and clinical but that’s personal taste.

A much bigger piece of art or lovely big mirror above the fireplace. A wooden beam would also work really well. Agree with others re the clock - get rid, and replace the tv unit with something taller, and more timeless and classic.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 02/01/2023 15:16

I hadn't wanted to mention the TV stand...

But yes, if you can switch that out your space will instantly look much, much nicer.

DogInATent · 02/01/2023 15:19

Give it some personality. Some of your personality (books, plants, photos/pictures), not someone else's from the internet.

White and grey can be very stylish, but it needs something personal to give it some warmth otherwise it can tend towards the Dignitas waiting room look.

Fearnecuptea · 02/01/2023 15:23

Agree with what others have suggested- a few healthy plants (maybe some palms), a (much larger) piece of authentic art on the wall and just a bit more colour in general.

I love the calmness of the room, so just think a few little tweaks and it'll be a really nice space to chill/ do your yoga in. Don't think you need bold, bright colours, looks like a few hints of muted greens/sandy colours will be enough.

I personally would get rid of that glass tv cabinet and get something abit more modern but that's just me as I have a quite disproportionate aversion to glass tables/ tv cabinets 😂

Other than that it's a really nice room and tbh it's all personal taste anyway so some people would probably feel it's perfect as is so 🤷‍♀️

VioletLemon · 02/01/2023 15:27

A rug, try Wayfair and a large framed print or a group of gallery style pictures on chimney wall, some greenery, trailing plants.

Fluffymule · 02/01/2023 15:29

The basics of the room are already great - the floor and shutters, the shelving, and the light appears good too.

I'd add the rug, cushions and a throw as others have suggested. I'd also add a floor lamp, books on the shelves, and plants - large and small.

I'd swap the small print for a big mirror or piece of art work and remove the wall clock that looks a bit utilitarian/office space.

If budget allowed I'd also add some definition above the fireplace - a chunky sleeper style shelf for example.
