Help me not hate my new kitchen!!!! (+photos)

Ok - my kitchen (which is supposed to be a delicate, cool grey) has just been installed in our new build.

Bear in mind there are no lights yet and the 2 side windows are covered in blue protective film. Finally the white carrara worktop has not yet been installed which will hopefully give it a lift.

However, I can't help feeling it just looks drab!! Please can you help reassure me that it will look a lot better when finished? I can't decide what paint colour to go with either so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm starting to panic!
Thanks

P.S 100% aware that this is a complete FWP.

I like it and I think a big leafy plant might look good with it. Something like this. Or a feature canvas.

I think it will look great when its finished and it doesnt look cheap at all! Blank canvas really and perfect for a splash of colour (Id go peach personally) - plus cool light fittings and appliances, will look great!

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 06/07/2018 21:22

Right, we have paint! (or one coat anyway). It's fabulous. Thankfully, the colour is closer to white than I expected and looks fresh yet warm. Really happy with it. Definitely feeling a lot more positive and can't wait to get the place cleaned up.

Need to shop for some brass accessories I think - also can't wait to get a few of my prints on the walls. 2 weeks today until we move in. Eek!

Ooh - looking good! Pleased you're pleased as well.

Can I be cheeky and ask what paint colour that is? Looking for something similar.

Oxfordblue · 07/07/2018 08:44

Oh dear, Sounds like the misers got in first - let's see your kitchens!

I think it'll be fine - natural light coming in though the windows will make a difference. White units are definitely the best choice as are light floors.

Sherbet38 · 07/07/2018 08:53

I have a similar colour kitchen and wooden floor. I was worried it would look dark. But we've lightened it with white metro tiles (we did live without tiles for a while but we did end up with splashes up the wall), bright white woodwork and a duck egg colour in the walls (Dulux mint macaroon). Its bright and fresh, I plan to add some yellow at some point 😊

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 07/07/2018 09:35

Natalia, not cheeky at all! If I didn't have other people's help and suggestions, we'd still be at foundations!

It's Little Greene Ceviche, one of their new greys. Slight green undertone.

Looks lovely! I'd do the walls a nice strong teal

JuneMyNameIsJune · 07/07/2018 15:08

Paint is absolutely perfect - love it.

It is going to look stunning.

Please post pictures once everything is done.

madcatladyforever · 07/07/2018 15:18

I think it's the perfect base for all your other stuff. You'd soon get sick of something more colourful.
You'll really be able to make it look amazing with some tiles and accessories.
Have a look on pinterest for some accessory decorating ideas.
I always have a very plain kitchen and then go mad deorating and it always looks amazing.

EmGee · 07/07/2018 15:22

I'd keep it all white/whitish colours. I honestly think a bright colour on a wall might make the room look less big/airy. (That's just my preference though). It looks lovely. Love all the windows/skylights. So serene!

NataliaOsipova · 07/07/2018 16:19

Thank you! I'm going to get a tester pot. Your kitchen is looking really, really lovely now!

needyourlovingtouch · 07/07/2018 16:30

Looks lovely. What's the flooring going to be

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 07/07/2018 16:48

Thanks all.

lovingtouch, the floor is an engineered board called Ardagh Oak. It's a warm Oak but with brown undertones rather than yellow or grey. Took me ages to pick it but very happy with it. Like everything else in there, it's all covered up!

Looks great. Like a pp said, the blue film is affecting the tone, makes it all look cooler. It will make a huge difference when it comes off, as will those gorgeous barstools 😊

brownmouse · 09/07/2018 14:29

I think it looks fucking AWESOME.

Some nice feature lights and a few items with colour will tie it together perfectly.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 09/07/2018 14:33

Aw thanks a million FlowersCake

We're not having any pendants as we felt they might block the view between the kitchen and slider. So there are dimmable spots in the bulk head over the hob, and also a LED strip around the bulkhead which will shine upwards and hopefully give some nice ambient light. Dying to get our electricity connection to see what these are like!

It looks really great. It looks excellent quality and it has come together well already. Do you plan on having any artwork of any description on the walls? I think that will lift it all, and I really like the design of the bar stools.

I have this sort of kitchen in mind for whenever we get round to doing ours (we've only been thinking about it for 8 years!). My preference is for duck egg blue or olive in a glass splashback, and maybe these kind of bar stools/table and chairs stools - you can get them in loads of colours. I too like things like kettle, toaster etc to sort of merge in and not stand out, and I have never been able to fathom where I could put a feature wall, so never bothered.

Just giving you an alternative idea.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 09/07/2018 15:01

WellTidy, definitely going to put up loads of framed prints and artwork!

I really love those stools btw, going to check out shipping to Ireland, they're a fraction of the price too!! It's a pain when they come in too many gorgeous colours, can never decide Blush

Aww, OP it's kinda sweet how nervous you are. ☺️.

Honestly, that kitchen is going to look stunning. I wouldn't race into doing anything extra with it just yet. Live with it a while and see how it goes. Don't overthink this...

Do you have nice views from your kitchen. I've pretty views from my house with big trees and gardens so I'm happy to have a plainer kitchen as the view outside is so nice.

BagelGoesWalking · 09/07/2018 15:33

A strip of LED lights under overhead cupboards are one of the best things we did! Love them, as I prefer soft lights. They're the ones I leave on in the evening so there's enough light when making tea, for example.

My other favourite thing is the slim pull out for spices and oils. Only 200 wide but so useful.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 09/07/2018 15:44

Haha always, I don't know if it's sweet, my husband would probably tell you I'm wrecking his head Wink

Oh yay Bagel, I have one of those pull outs beside the ovens. I hate all that olive oil and salt/pepper clutter you invariably get.

Hi OP I agree with majority of others it's looking great and is going to be beautiful when finished! You have great taste in kitchens! Don't listen to the "too clinical" and "boring " comments, out kitchen is sling the same lines as yours (although much smaller sadly!) and in my experience those kind of comments came from people whose kitchens looked very cluttered and unloved!

We did ours about two years ago and it probably took another 9 months on top of that to decide on and find the perfect finishing touches I.e you may find you want to live in a bit while making your mind up.

If I did mine again I would have glass or maybe Perspex splashback behind every work surface and sink. We did it behind the stove but should have continued. Little things like when I chop a pepper tiny flecks of the juice go everywhere!

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 21/07/2018 12:34

Well lads, it's 24 hours after I've moved in. Absolutely exhausted and up to my ears in dust and grime. However thought I'd update you with my clean kitchen (before my kids get home!)

It's definitely a keeper :)

Thanks all for the kind words of reassurance! Wishing you all well in your kitchen journeys ;)
