Help me not hate my new kitchen!!!! (+photos)

Ok - my kitchen (which is supposed to be a delicate, cool grey) has just been installed in our new build.

Bear in mind there are no lights yet and the 2 side windows are covered in blue protective film. Finally the white carrara worktop has not yet been installed which will hopefully give it a lift.

However, I can't help feeling it just looks drab!! Please can you help reassure me that it will look a lot better when finished? I can't decide what paint colour to go with either so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm starting to panic!
Thanks

P.S 100% aware that this is a complete FWP.

I like it very much. We paid good money to have ours look similar. I like the clean lines. Once you've got stuff in there'll be plenty of colour. It will be great, don't panic.

scatteredglitter · 03/07/2018 07:33

Oh golly it s fabulous ! I love it. Kitchen envy .

Whitney168 · 03/07/2018 07:41

It looks like a typical new build kitchen, cheap and basic. A bit wardrobey.

Sorry but I think it is very plain and boring.

How unpleasant a person do you have to be to post comments like this, when someone has spent thousands on a kitchen and is having a crisis of confidence? Hmm

It might not be to everyone's taste, that's why there are all sorts available (I love it and have kitchen envy), but glad most didn't jump on that bitchy bandwagon.

Will be fab when it's finished and furnished OP, hold the faith!

ProseccoPoppy · 03/07/2018 07:48

The worktop will definitely give it a lift - but considering it isn’t finished yet I think it looks nice so far! With the lovely cool colours you could afford to have a real “pop” from some feature paint or tiles and from a lovely kettle and toaster etc. I would be tempted to go for quite a deep pink - at least for the walls between the worktop and top cupboard - with really sleek shiny chrome small appliances in a classic design - perhaps a Dualit toast and kettle set? Alternatively, have the walls dove grey and introduce colour with a bright kettle/toaster/kitchenaid etc and match the kitchen blind to those.

ProseccoPoppy · 03/07/2018 07:49

Pink would give this sort of effect, which personally I love.

My kitchen is very similar. The walls are zoffany harbour grey - 1/4 on ceilings, 1/2 or full on the walls in different places. It actully comes up slightly olive and is practically the same as my last house where I used several shade of deluxe kaki mist, that was cheaper and the same colour. The photos don’t do it justice but in rl it looks beautiful. Xx

It doesn't look cheap imo
Pics when worktops on pls
What's up other end of room?
Totally agree with pp who said about kitchen units designed to be lost
If it were me, I wouldn't add any pops of colour at all probably and def not until rest of room is fully furnished
I like empty worktops and a feeling of space that unfussy and blank spaces give
But I'm a bit odd maybe. I can actually feel headachey and s bit sick with some interior design magazines with fussy overfilled object laden And patterned pictures of rooms

jarox · 03/07/2018 08:23

I hated my new build kitchen until the worktops went in. It made such a difference!! And once you have all other furniture in it adds a lot more personality. I would make sure you cost it up with soft furnishings and more colour in the dining and living areas and then it won't feel too cold!!

ExBbqQueen · 03/07/2018 08:30

We redid our kitchen couple of years ago. All white units & whitish granite. But the walls are an olive green. It’s lovely & fresh in the summer & cosy in the winter.

I had so many tester pots in various colours out & on all the walls - by the windows & in the corners so that I could see what it looked like in different lights.

I think I spent about £30-40 on tester pots but it turned out to be a really good investment. I would never have thought of having such a dark colour if the lady in the shop hadn’t suggested it.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 03/07/2018 08:33

Thanks a million guys.

Kitchenmad, your kitchen and room is FABULOUS. I love that calm vibe, and is that a polished concrete worktop? EnvySmile Love the tiles too. Really really nice.

Abitoflight, thanks. I'm not a 'pops of colour' kind of person either, I'd say some coloured bar stools might be as far as I go. Maybe. I also like that feeling that an uncluttered space gives me. I hate clutter and fussiness and too much going on, it makes my head too busy and I can't think.

Attached is what's on the other end of the room. It feels a bit bigger than the photos show - it's a dining area and a casual lounge area (for drinking all that coffee Smile) and a window seat.

P.S Not keeping the cement mixer Grin

Just remembered that dulux have a visualiser app so you can sort of see what the room will look like.

NataliaOsipova · 03/07/2018 08:43

I'm confused by this. What's not to like about your kitchen? It looks clean, modern and tasteful. I can't stand "splashes of colour" (anywhere), so that wouldn't be my advice. I think it will look very nice when it's all done.

I think half the problem is that you see things in magazines and imagine that - rather than the room you actually have (if that makes sense?). It's a bit like taking in a picture of a model to the hairdresser; you'll end up with that sort of haircut rather than looking like Cindy Crawford or whoever.

I think your kitchen will be lovely. Try not to worry and wait and see when it's done. You can always add, as a pp suggested, a clock/picture/different light fitting if you want to at that point.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 03/07/2018 08:51

I guess Natalia that I had an idea in my head of the look I was going for, and this isn't it. It looks way more 'flat' and lifeless from a colour pov. I'm trying to take the advice and not panic until the worktops are in and the room is painted. I think even some white ceilings will help set it off more. Fingers crossed! Thanks.

I love it!

I think it's going to be beautiful when finished - please come back with a pic.

As PP have said, statement pieces such as clock, fruit bowl, coffee machine, plants etc will all shape its look. I think metallics would look fantastic.

Also - don't underestimate the power of great lighting, colour temperature and fixtures.

We moved in to a - completely not my taste, white gloss and black granite kitchen, with the most awful black & white flowery tiles. I hated it - but it was a year old and quality. I changed the tiles, put it a gorgeous metallic pendant over the breakfast bar. Added some metallic stools and accessories and now I love it.

The fun bit is yet to come Smile

Dodie66 · 03/07/2018 09:01

I would add items like kettles, toasters etc in a bright colour, maybe red would look lovely with the grey

purplegreen99 · 03/07/2018 09:02

I love it - exactly what I'd like in a kitchen: clean, calm, simple, minimal. It will look fantastic when you have the worktops and floor and, because it's quite neutral, you have lots of options for colour, plants, pictures or whatever you choose to add to personalise it.

Ramona75 · 03/07/2018 09:03

Your kitchen looks great! Don't listed to family and friends, as they have probably already given you their 2 pence worth on things that they would change or do differently. When you walk into their kitchens, I imagine there are things you would steer clear of too?

A kitchen is like a painting, some like it, some hate it. As long as you like your work of art, then that is all that matters!

Oliversmumsarmy · 03/07/2018 09:06

When I am stuck on what colour to use I say "When in doubt paint it white" Then think about what paint will go later.

Love the idea of using the same shade of grey of the kitchen in the living area.

Kitchenmad · 03/07/2018 09:09

Your space looks so much like mine, I have the roof light too and it does let lovely light changes in that are different all day long. I love it! For bar stools etc I’ve gone a kaki/greyish type of colour that works fab with the walls and on the soft grey/beige couch I have a couple of metallic gold cushions - I’ll eventually paper one wall with metal icy gold paper to tie in. If you want it all to be that soft and calming look don’t do the white ceilings. The 1/4 version of the wall colours just takes the stark edge off and you wouldn’t know they arnt white when it’s all painted iyswim but makes such an amazing difference! Your kitchen will be lovely. X

Kitchenmad · 03/07/2018 09:11

Sorry forgot - work tops are corian.

eggncress · 03/07/2018 09:12

It will be lovely when finished OP. It’s always worse when you’re looking at a building site.If light is an issue I would stick to white and add colour with prints on the wall ( framed and home made by the dc are the best !), a few plants for greenery to add a lush feel and some flowers in the window !

EmGee · 03/07/2018 09:14

I love it. Pls post 'after' pics. I think you will be very happy when it's all finished!

mydietstartsmonday · 03/07/2018 09:35

I love your kitchen. The floor & work tops give it class.
I would go mad with colour, maybe an one accent wall; are you brave for something like a bright orange???

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 03/07/2018 09:41

Eeeeek! I was thinking about an accent colour, but more up towards the lounge area. There isn't really a wall in the kitchen apart from the long one at the side which extends as far as the slider, and also the splashback. That's about it!
