Help me not hate my new kitchen!!!! (+photos)

Ok - my kitchen (which is supposed to be a delicate, cool grey) has just been installed in our new build.

Bear in mind there are no lights yet and the 2 side windows are covered in blue protective film. Finally the white carrara worktop has not yet been installed which will hopefully give it a lift.

However, I can't help feeling it just looks drab!! Please can you help reassure me that it will look a lot better when finished? I can't decide what paint colour to go with either so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm starting to panic!
Thanks

P.S 100% aware that this is a complete FWP.

Photos please!!

I think it is gorgeous, once it is fully finished I bet you love it, it is just hard to get the full impression yet. A few pretty kitchen accessories, a Cath Kidston tea towel or three etc, flowers or orchid etc and it will feel like home. Very jealous OP, hope you will be pleased with the counter tops on. If not I'm happy to swap kitchens ;)

Freetogo · 03/07/2018 18:44

It looks lovely. Shove some Dulux Timeless on the walls, & go from there.

I wouldn't add colour straight away. Give it time. Do lots of window shopping for nice accessories.
Spend too soon & you will spend twice!

Add some mood lighting or up lighting or spot lights with dimmer functions and you will have a classy kitchen.
Chuck in some focus pieces, a vase, a kitchen ornament, those lovely oil preserved vegetable bottles in different sizes etc etc whatever takes your fancy really and you are taking the focus away from the boring look. Paint wise just make sure the colours are not too bright. Suppose a range of colours would suit from duck egg blue to a sunny warm yellow!! Once it's done and you add your own touch to claim it. I'm sure you will love it!!

helpfulperson · 03/07/2018 19:33

I don't think you can tell. When I had my new kitchen I was semi-seriously asking them to take it back out when I saw it about half way through. Love it know it's finished.

Being white the cupboards etc are really just holding everything else together - what colour are the walls etc going to be? You can afford to be either delicate with light colours or bold.

sofialemon · 03/07/2018 20:10

It will look great when it's finished and you put your furniture and things in. I'd stick to white or pale grey on the walls with maybe a bold grey feature wall (e.g F&B Downpipe).

I wouldn't go for pops of colour with your kettle etc and just stick to stainless steel or white. I'd add nice wooden and marble chopping boards, a few plants and some nice prints.

I think this kitchen is nice and minimal without looking bland.

Ok, here we go.

Worktops are stunning. 100% love them and the installation is spot on.

I think what I'm hesitant about are the dark grey slips giving the stripes behind the presses/drawers. I also think the blue plastic is giving a really sicky greeny hue. I'm so stressed, this is ridiculous.

It looks lovely, the worktops beautiful. I'd pick up the dark grey colour of the slips in a feature wall or some other accent/accessory.

Once the window and floor coverings come off and you have the walls painted it will make a big difference.

Plural · 03/07/2018 22:26

I think it looks lovely. A real minimalist look which may not be what you're going for but lovely nonetheless. It'll be easy to pu in pops of colour with a kettle, toaster, washing up tray etc.

EmGee · 04/07/2018 08:19

Love it. The clean lines, the simplicity, the light colours. I'm not actually sure you will need to do much to jazz it up - just do as Plural suggests. I think the beauty of it actually lies in the minimalism.

I'm not sure I would have a feature wall. It may make the kitchen area (if not the whole room) look smaller. You can easily put up a jazzy picture. I had my kids art work framed in Ikea frames and they look really good as well as adding bright shots of colour.

I have a similar shelving insert in my own kitchen (seen in your first photo from your latest post). However, as it faces the living room, I only have a photo frame and a small decorative bowl displayed. It's a nice feature though!

I would do something to inject some colour. This is just so... clinical?

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 04/07/2018 09:06

I've got loads of lovely prints which I'm going to use for colour. At this stage, I'm swinging from absolutely loving it to absolutely hating it.

Our builder loves it though :D

Oh my god I love love love your kitchen. We are buying a house at the moment and I have been dreaming about my new kitchen...which wd look a lot like yours. I am thinking of having the window full height tho...to add light. But I think yours will look fine once finished.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 04/07/2018 13:41

Definitely go for the full height window. We couldn't have done that due to planning/boundary etc. :(

Worktops are gorgeous.
Will change totally once the blue comes off.

We have the same dark grey fingerpull shadow gap detail and I guess it's personal taste but I like it.
I prefer it to the cheap howdens fingerpull doors that have them routered into the doors.

InTheRoseGarden · 04/07/2018 14:02

@kitchenmad Your kitchen is gorgeous. Where is it from?

Maverick66 · 04/07/2018 23:53

Trust me, it will be fab when finished. I would look at adding 'pops' of colour using crockery and tea coffee jars. Kettle and toaster.

Bumblealong1 · 05/07/2018 00:14

I have very rustic, country taste so have just installed something very different. But you wanted light and airy- it looks like you have nailed the brief.

Some colourful prints, a beautiful fruit bowl etc. It will look/it does look fabulous.

Love a carrera worktop too. And no, they are not cheap!

BagelGoesWalking · 05/07/2018 00:32

I think it's lovely! We have an engineered wood floor and it's fab. With all the accessories of table, chairs etc it will look lovely.

The only thing I would say is that with the floor to ceiling units on the left of pic, think of you need all the high cabinets on the right. We deliberately left a space on a wall where we could have had a high cupboard (above one end of the counter top dividing the kitchen from dining area) and I'm so glad we did.

It would have been too much and would have made it feel a lot more closed in. I'll try to remember to take a pic tomorrow.

ScienceIsTruth · 05/07/2018 03:36

That's already made a big difference and has really lifted the colour of the cabinetry. We're doing a complete house renovation too (whilst living in it though), so I sympathise with how stressful it gets.
Due to circumstances beyond our control it's taken us 2 years already, rather than the 6-8 month timescale we had originally planned.
We're now finally at the stage where we're having wardrobes built, skirting, etc, put on, doors hung, etc, alongside painting and tiling, etc. We've still to order carpets and furniture, but are hoping to be finished (inside) by mid September. It's exciting, but nerve racking and stressful. The tiler we had really ballsed our main bathroom up, so I've just ripped it out so it can be re-tiled, it's very disheartening, and has set us back again as the new tiler can't fit us in for 2 months.

Hold your nerve and I'm sure it will work out just fine Wink

My kitchen is a pale olive/sage green gloss with a dove grey quartz worktop studded with crystals. The splashbacks will be a pale pink glitter mosaic tile (unless I chicken out of the pink and stick to the safe choice of silver and black glittery mosaic brick tiles). Sounds awful when I say it out loud, but the colours complement each other and it looks nice in reality! Grin honestly!!!

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 05/07/2018 03:53

I think it looks lovely and I'm not remotely "minimalist"
The blue window film is not flattering it, it will look great in proper light.
I'd keep accessories neutral, ban all clutter from that stunning island /peninsula and just have one focal item on it.
Stunt pineapple?Grin

Bluefargo · 05/07/2018 07:51

With wooden floors and, as you suggested, maybe leather stools - they will add lots of warmth and texture. Put up the painting/art you mentioned, cookbooks and whatever you will have put on the surfaces and it'll look great!!

bathildab · 05/07/2018 07:58

It will be fine if you add pops of colour in occasional chair/stool/accessories etc Smile

bathildab · 05/07/2018 08:01

Just to clarify I mean books etc - not necessarily a fan of coloured toaster etc. I prefer that stuff to blend in. I would also choose stools carefully as a rustic looking stool may not work with that counter - needs to be quite simple I think.
