Help me not hate my new kitchen!!!! (+photos)

Ok - my kitchen (which is supposed to be a delicate, cool grey) has just been installed in our new build.

Bear in mind there are no lights yet and the 2 side windows are covered in blue protective film. Finally the white carrara worktop has not yet been installed which will hopefully give it a lift.

However, I can't help feeling it just looks drab!! Please can you help reassure me that it will look a lot better when finished? I can't decide what paint colour to go with either so any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I'm starting to panic!
Thanks

P.S 100% aware that this is a complete FWP.

llangennith, I wish I had that luxury! Builders will be out in 2 weeks so will be asking for paint probably this week. At least the stone will be in I guess. I'll just have to go with a very safe neutral for now, and repaint in a year or two.

I felt the same when our new kitchen was installed OP. Love it now! Have some Wine

clownfaces · 02/07/2018 20:33

I think it will look lovely and agree that it looks expensive.

Tara336 · 02/07/2018 21:08

I like it and agree some colourful accessories will look great. Ignore the mean comments

TheCraicDealer · 02/07/2018 21:17

We have something very similar in style and colour (unfortunately a lot smaller) and similar coloured flooring. We used a light teal glass splashback to add some colour. Also matching Le Crueset accessories but that's famously gauche according to MN Grin we had to have a dark worktop but yours is much much nicer.

FWIW I'm very jealous! You have a COFFEE CUPBOARD fgs!

Roystonv · 02/07/2018 21:22

A striking picture/painting would give you a focus point without being messy/stuffy. I think it will look lovely.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 02/07/2018 21:26

Craic haha. We actually left previous kitchen companies because they couldn't design a solution for our coffee machine & grinder. They're big and the most used appliances in the house so needed to go somewhere that wouldn't take up the entire worktop. We basically designed the kitchen around coffee.

I have a striking picture, might not be to everyones taste but I knew the artist and loved this piece.

ScienceIsTruth · 02/07/2018 21:35

The colour isn't to my taste as I think it's very bland (atm, at least), but it's a lovely space and lets in lots of light. It also looks like the space has been well planned/thought out. With some colour on the walls, and colourful accessories, I'm sure it'll look lovely and welcoming. The worktop will probably make a big difference too.

ScienceIsTruth · 02/07/2018 21:38

I'll read the thread now as I didn't want to influence what I said.

egdehsdrawkcab · 02/07/2018 21:46

OP I love it! Where's it from???

NameChanger22 · 02/07/2018 21:52

I think it will look good when it's done. It just needs some good lighting and a splash of colour.

MrsToddsShortcut · 02/07/2018 21:54

It's fab. When you've accessorised and it's lit and you've got everything in it, you'll love it. You have a brilliant chance to make it exactly what you want on a blank canvas - have fun!

niknac1 · 02/07/2018 21:57

I’m really envious, your kitchen is lovely and you are going to be so happy when its finished.

TwinkleToes86 · 02/07/2018 21:57

I love it OP. Just imagine it with lighting and some of your things out.

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 02/07/2018 22:01

Science, I appreciate your honesty. That's what I'm afraid of too. I'm hoping it's only bland because it's currently the exact same colour as the plastered walls.

egdehsdrawkcab, it's a Gola kitchen from a place called New*haven in Co. Carlow (Ireland)

We are having our kitchen refitted at the moment - a very similar grey. Maybe slightly deeper, but only a fraction (it is hard to tell from the photos). Like you, we have a big, light room. I am loving the colour - it is clean and modern and flexible enough for us to change the wall colours to just about anything in the future but interesting at the same time.

We have teamed it with slate grey tiles and we're having a mid grey quartz worktop with a duck egg glass splashback behind the range and white tiles behind the sink.

We have grained wood on the units and the floor tiles have the slate patterning, so there is texture and interest there, and we're going to have the wall tiles laid in a herringbone pattern so again that is a kind of texture. And we're going to have F&B Oval Room Blue on the walls - in the light kitchen (we have windows on two walls and a glazed door on a third) it is a gorgeous greeny colour - bold enough but not overpowering. And I love cooking with fresh herbs so I have some white plant pots from IKEA that I keep basil and coriander and mint in to put on one of the windowsills. I am really excited about it coming together.

CookPassBabtridge · 02/07/2018 22:21

Seriously OP, wait until it's finished! All my rooms look shit without furnishings/appliances/wooden floors showing.

JennyWren · 02/07/2018 22:23

We've also gone for oak cabinets behind the grey fronts. We have an oak dresser that is going on one wall, and we're going to have oak stools under the breakfast bar, so it ties together brilliantly and doesn't feel cold at all.

ScienceIsTruth · 02/07/2018 22:29

Thanks, face. As I said it may just look bland atm because it's not finished, and with the light obscured it looks more white than grey. I've been living with a half finished kitchen for months and the difference just adding the worktop made is amazing, and really changed the whole look of it, so don't despair yet. It's beautifully designed though and a lovely space. The wooden floor adds warmth too. I'm sure once its fully finished and you've added a few accessories it will look lovely, and you'll remember why you ordered it. Smile

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 02/07/2018 22:29

Jenny your kitchen sounds fab! Put up a photo when it's done :)

FacelikeaBagofHammers · 02/07/2018 22:31

Thanks science - I'm going to be nervous walking through the front door tomorrow, expecting a massive transformation!!

We're going with waterfall ends on the worktop so there will be that extra amount of white that I'm hoping will just soften that industrial grey look. The builder will kill me but I might not be able to help myself ripping off that blue window plastic.

Really don’t try to judge it yet, everything looks crap when it’s half done. I bet if you saw a smallbone kitchen half done you’d think it looks grotty. When it’s finished you can make it your own.

JennyWren · 02/07/2018 22:54

I will - although I may have to change my username as I'll be showing the kitchen off to everyone I know!

I am sure your kitchen will look fabulous once you're in and living in it. We had the advantage of already living in the house and using the kitchen - the renovation was a long time in the planning. My kitchen supplier hates me, I think, because I have such fixed ideas of what I want and I've sent back a couple of things because they don't meet the brief, but I told him upfront that I was only going to be able to afford to do it once, and so it has to be perfect. I don't think he quite believed that I meant it :)

Maybe think about other rooms you love being in. Not necessarily kitchens, but what colour schemes do you generally gravitate to. You can add just about anything to grey - I love greens and blues but you could have anything you like. By keeping the bolder colour to paint and accessories it is much cheaper to change your mind once you've lived in it than if you go for coloured tiles, for example.

rogueone · 02/07/2018 22:59

It looks fab. I bet it will look brilliant when it’s all finished. Far too early to panic. Looking forward to the photos when it’s complete
