Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Tunisia.

Dirty, disappointing and generally felt unsafe. I’ve travelled extensively and that was the only place I left early.

We went to Riga for the Christmas Markets and couldn’t find them. It was drab, the restaurants closed at 9.30 and there whole atmosphere was one of Soviet Russia in the 1960s. The most exciting part of the trip was the evening we spent in the Central Police Station when my passport had been stolen. It’s the only part of the trip we ever talk about.

Santorini- sunsets are just sunsets, overcrowded and expensive

digiwidgy · 10/07/2025 14:00

Paris. Unfriendly and dirty.

Yes, I felt uncomfortable and not very safe. And I was bought up in a Middle Eastern country!
This was before the terrible beach attack in 2015.

We had to e same experience in Norway. Went on August not realising they were well into Autumn! But lived the trip though.
Most disappointing was Miami. Not a dream destination but we had to fly through there in our honeymoon so decided to stay over a couple days. Could not see the attraction at all.

France one year in Eurocamp. Black flies infestation on site , so in pool , mobile home with the addition of ants . Beach too windy and deep drops in water so afraid for kids. No decent restaurants nearby . And also rained . And smelled bad . Merde.

Champaganesupernova · 10/07/2025 14:03

Paphos, hotel was stunning but we were really disappointed with the place and the old town . After seeing beautiful places in Sicily and Italy the town for us was no comparison.

mondaytosunday · 10/07/2025 14:03

Loved the trip that should read!

Las Vegas for me. I thought I’d love it and find it really fun but I hated it.

Overtheatlantic · 10/07/2025 14:04

Florence. Too crowded, Boboli Gardens looked dry and unloved, I just didn’t get it.

Bluesclues1 · 10/07/2025 14:05

Bali ☹️ it was a long way to go for disappointment!

Santorini is my biggest travel disappointment too. The sunset is beautiful but ruined by crowds of Americans loudly whooping at it and helicopters flying around the caldera. The food was the worst I’ve eaten in Greece too. My husband tried to put me off booking the stay as he’d been before and knew what it was like. I should have listened to him (the only time I’m willing to admit that).

ByLimeAnt · 10/07/2025 14:08

Egypt.

Only other place I felt as unsafe was Jo'burg.

tartyflette · 10/07/2025 14:08

I didn't love Hanoi either, it was very dirty and the traffic was terrifying.
But in retrospect, after I had gotten over the culture shock, I'm glad we went, it was a real experience, so different. And the pollution made for spectacular sunsets...

wordywitch · 10/07/2025 14:09

Torrevieja, Spain - and southern Spain in general. I don’t like the landscape (too dry, rocky and barren of trees), find the food oily and repetitive, and the people not particularly friendly.

growinguptobreakingdown · 10/07/2025 14:09

Agadir, Morocco is the only holiday I have been on and could not get why anyone would go there. We ended up leaving our stuff in the room and booking a place for 2 nights in Taroudant to escape .Taroudant was lovely.

I was really disappointed in Florence. Obviously beautiful bits, but very aware of its own magnificence iykwim.
My worst holiday was Malta. Absolutely hated it.

andanotherproblem · 10/07/2025 14:11

I was very disappointed in Venice and we only went for a day (was going to multiple destinations in Italy), I found we were actually bored come afternoon.

StanfreyPock · 10/07/2025 14:12

Dublin, grey, grubby, unfriendly

Cote d'Azur, too built up, most things shut even in late May, v disappointing

Figcherry · 10/07/2025 14:13

St Lucia, beautiful but no architecture, nothing to do other than water sports or sunbathing.

Honon · 10/07/2025 14:13

Lille, went there when the Eurostar began running there. Found it quite dull and lacking in character, good modern art gallery though.

cc99xo · 10/07/2025 14:14

Lapland 🙈 we did still love it in ways, just not what I imagined but I think it’s because we did Rovanemmi - just way too commercialised and busy. Next time we’ll do Levi and stay in the Northen Lights village
