Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Centre Parcs. Overpriced and underwhelming. Damp, cramped and mouldy accommodation. And there are only so many bike rides and walks you can do in one week! Without doubt, the most boring holiday I’ve ever been on.

couldn't agree more, some of the accommodation is shocking for the price they charge. It's not even well equipped, we had a top of the range lodge last time we went (big group of us and the cost was still eye watering in term time) and for a place that's based around watersports and activities there wasn't even a clothes airer to dry stuff on. IMO it's fake outdoors for people who like the idea of being outdoorsy but don't actually want to be outdoorsy. I just don't get it, everything about the place makes me want to get out.

Abracadabra12345 · 10/07/2025 15:36

I’m amazed at the pp who thought Venice was boring as we found it magical. We were there for 8 days in spring. However we love art and architecture and had done a lot of research, and made sure we were there early each day. Was it a day excursion from a cruise ship (when they stopped there?) In which case, you’d have loads of people all going to St Marks Square at the same time which would be brutal

tobee · 10/07/2025 15:36

No maybe I should though @ThePoshUns.

Funnily enough Dh and I were talking about it yesterday and he doesn't want to go to Barcelona because he thinks he'll be pick pocketed ☹️

We were also discussing whether places have been ruined by tourism; stag do s and instagrammers etc. Anyone been disappointed by a return trip?

Malta - just wasn't enough to do and we were bored ! Beautiful island if you like to sit by the pool so it really depends what you like to on holiday.

Ive been to Malta multiple times and probably only sat by the pool once or twice! I found soooo much to do there, was very active, a good mix of healthy activities and some lovely bars and restaurants for the evening too.
Id only ever go off peak though. Its hot and busy and full of traffic even in winter so id dread to think what it be like in July or August.

Tessasanderson · 10/07/2025 15:38

Dubai. Glorified desert/building site. Amazing hotels, amazing views from the top but it was just hot, fake and air conditioned. Zero redeeming features.

tartyflette · 10/07/2025 14:16

The Sagrada Familia, perhaps? Or Parc Guell?

Edited

Park Guell is an absolute monstrosity

Knowsley · 10/07/2025 15:40

@Stormroses , I'd love to go to Egypt - seeing the pyramids is very high on my travel wish list.
That's one of those ones where you'll be absolutely stunned by them and disappointed. I'd definitely go to Cairo again.

That was completely the opposite experience I had of Malta! We went for 10 days and explored a different town/ancient site/museum/fort etc every day. Going back this year and there's loads more we want to see.

We only had one afternoon at the pool.

I went in winter for two weeks and there was loads to do, great public transport everywhere. I did find it funny that it's marketed as a sun holiday destination because there's only one beach or something on t he whole island.

The downside was the men, so persistent as to be an absolute fucking menace. I had one come past me in his car, see that I was alone, stop, park and get out to pester me.

I remember saying to a taxi driver, in so many words 'How rude do I have to be before you'll leave me alone?'

Everyplace that has mass tourism - Paris, Lisbon, Krakow, Amsterdam, Florence, Pisa etc. They were all just chaotic, overpriced and commercialised.
Florence - as I was working there, the morning walk through the city centre at 7:30am was superb, and I ended up getting up really early to explore the streets for the 10 days I was there...

I would amend that to say the touristed central areas of those cities.

Although you're right about Florence- it's so small that the touristed central area is (nearly) all there is. Prague's a bit like that too.

But eg Paris and Amsterdam are big enough to have some really interesting areas that aren't particularly touristy.

Santorini- sunsets are just sunsets, overcrowded and expensive

Haha, reminds me of the song ”Sunset” from Pulp’s new album

So I bought myself a ticket
To the happening of the year
The sky lit up with colours
The crowd let out a cheer

"It's just a sunset", someone said
Something that happens every day
"Yes, it's a sunset", someone said
But now they've found a way to make it pay

spoonbillstretford · 10/07/2025 15:42

I don't recall being ever disappointed by a destination. But then as a kid the furthest we went was Cornwall as my dad didn't like "foreign food".

There were a lot of holidays in North Wales, Blackpool and Scotland where there was a lot of sitting in the car/a caravan eating floppy sandwiches and drinking sweet milky lukewarm coffee from a Thermos flask, staring at the rain.

Anything I did after then seemed absolutely brilliant! Went to Playa de las Americas where a plague of cockroaches were also on their holidays and still had a great time.

DancingNotDrowning · 10/07/2025 15:42

I love Santorini - the south east of the island is beautiful and much calmer. You can take an evening trip to Oia and avoid the cruise ships

StrawberryWater · 10/07/2025 15:43

Last Vegas.

I knew it was going to be tacky but it was also full of really sad serious gambling addicts and there were so many people trying to rip you off, scam you a I had my purse stolen twice (thankfully got it back both times because or the amount of police on the strip). Food was disgusting too.

Tootingbec · 10/07/2025 15:44

Cuba in the late 90’s so it had only been open for European tourists for a few years. Feckin grim! Food terrible, hotel bars full of fat German blokes buying drinks for their Cuban “girlfriends” aka prostitutes, made me feel sad the whole time because as tourists we had access to basics like toothpaste when Cuban’s had nothing. Constantly hassled on the beach by men selling tat and desperate young women wanting to be our friend in some hope we could get them a visa out of there presumably.

Was there with my friend who was tall and blond and not very assertive which didn’t help on the hassle front!! So I also spent most of the holiday being the one to shoo people away.

I was just answering the question in the op. It was my most disappointing place I’ve been why does whether I knew before or not make any difference to my answer?

Because you say as the reason you didn't like the Maldives that the island was tiny and there was nothing to do but sunbathe or jet-ski -- things you must have known in advance. It's not that they shrunk the island once you arrived, and closed down all the museums. So why not go somewhere bigger with lots to do, rather than go somewhere small and limited and activites and then say its's 'disappointing'?

I mean, I've never been to the Maldives, because without ever doing any research, it's obvious they're tiny and aimed at people who want to swim and sunbathe.

Andsoitbeganagain · 10/07/2025 15:44

Menorca. Just dire. Rude people, awful food, weather wasnt great. Never been so pleased to leave a holiday destination.

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 10/07/2025 15:45

Turkey🤢.
I've been to over 20 Countries and this was the worse.
( might have gone to wrong area) . We saw 3 fatal car crashes.. because they don't take any notice of the rules.. one was a scooter with a Dad driving.. mum on back and two kids sat between. ( no helmets)
Im 66 and still got harassed by men everywhere.
The beaches were disgusting.
The food was awful ( got food poisoning from one restaurant). The shop assistants are very unfriendly.
Loads of industrial buildings... just wasn't pretty.

Fluffy40 · 10/07/2025 15:45

Sydney was disappointing for me. Just like busy old London with better weather.

it was saved by the blue mountains, which were lovely.

Dahliasrule · 10/07/2025 15:45

WondererWanderer · 10/07/2025 14:21

Agreed. No idea why people rave about Malta

If you like history, Malta is very interesting. Pre-history, knights Templar, World War 2.

Although I love the art and architecture of Florence, I felt very overwhelmed by the crowds, in particular the scooter riders who seemed to think they could drive anywhere. It was a relief to get to the tranquility of Venice.

Oh nooooo, I’m off there tomorrow for the weekend!!!!!!

I did a 7 day fjords cruise in 2019, and it was amazing. It was Good Friday week, and the weather was glorious. The air is so clean and fresh, and the scenery was breathtaking. Take a trip on the Flåm railway if you can.

The only disappointing part of the trip was my veggie food on the ship. But I’m used to being disappointed!!

Lollipop2025 · 10/07/2025 15:45

Really surprised to see florence on here, I loved every moment there.

My worse would be lanzarote, just dull. Very little to do. The market was full of knock off rubbish and we had to search down the little back streets to find anything more interesting.

ClowningAround21 · 10/07/2025 15:45

Cornwall, never again, over over priced, very crowded, we spent more time stuck in traffic jams and finding somewhere to park.

Lands end was a shocker.

Plus was the weather was good, until it wasn't, then it pissed down for the rest of the week.

NeverTrustTheScales · 10/07/2025 15:46

Cape Verbe 20 yeasr ago. My God it was dire and the brothel with underage children just outside the hotel gates was heartbreaking. The rep said if you cross the road they won't beckon to you. Awful place, never again.

BlackCatsAreBrilliant · 10/07/2025 15:47

PeonyPatch · 10/07/2025 14:09

Oh nooooo, I’m off there tomorrow for the weekend!!!!!!

Don't panic. We went earlier in the year, got excellent weather and loved them.

Fingers crossed that it's the same for you.

Permanentlymisunderstood · 10/07/2025 15:48

I hated New York. I think my expectations were too high, so many people said I would love it but then it felt like home (London) but with more dirt and horrible rude staff in restaurants and shops. See also Paris. I began to think it was a city thing but I adored Rome, just a completely different vibe.

Las Vegas is a fake, classless shithole. Had to go for work, and hated every moment.

I loved Tunisia, but it was a long time ago, we mostly went to the Roman sites (fantastic) and I am not attractive so got left alone. Also Malta, which was so pretty and lots of old sites to visit.
