Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

I'd be interested in a thread on this, perhaps hidden away somewhere appropriate?

I love your turn of phrase. This sentence is a work of art:

This is a terrible century for time-blind, anti-regimented dipsticks like me.

Are you my sister? I feel the same as you!!!

@crackofdoom ha ha- that’s really mini Turkey- great swimming pool too - one of my favourite bits of Berlin

Ooh, which swimming pool? We're going in a couple of weeks and staying in Kreuzberg. I was looking at the Badeschiff, but it looks quite pricey given that they don't have child concessions. I suspect they're hoping to discourage families.

@onehorserace , maybe you should have planned your visit and not base it on social media.
Watered down versions of Scotland my arse.

It was planned - looked at area guides etc but it just wasn't what I expected.

IsItSnowing · 15/07/2025 09:58

We stayed in the lake district on our way to Scotland (loved Scotland by the way). The scenery is beautiful but they really seem to hate tourists there. It's just not very welcoming. The car parks are a rip off. Everything is over priced. Our B&B was lovely though.
I'll definitely be going back to Scotland but I think I'll give the lake district a miss.

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2025 10:11

Every time I’ve been to the Lake District or to Truro it’s always rained. In fact , most of the time I’ve been to Cornwall it’s always rained. lovely places to visit, but many are a rip off for parking and food and overcrowded. Holidays seemed more relaxed years ago or I’ve just gotten older! Lol

Crikeyalmighty · 15/07/2025 11:53

@IsItSnowing I really dislike the Lake district and I’m not over fond of most of Cornwall either- can’t see why you wouldn’t go for Dorset if you want that life style, better connected- similar look .

Knowsley · 15/07/2025 12:03

Dorset isn't like Cornwall or the Lake District.

irregularegular · 15/07/2025 12:25

I've really enjoyed almost all of the places that others have listed as disappointing eg Paris, Barcelona, Marrakech... Paris in particular is somewhere we've been a few times and keep promising ourselves that we should try to pop over on Eurostar once a year. It's a bit like London, in that I think you can keep visiting and finding something new and interesting to explore every time, rather than a "once and done" kind of place.

I think that many circumstances can determine whether you have a really good trip somewhere. The people you are with and what mood they are all in, the specific people you meet, whether you make the right decision about where to stay/eat/visit, the weather etc

We had "disappointing" holidays in Istanbul and Croatia. But they were disappointing because I'm sure it's possible to have great holidays there and we didnt really. I'd very happily go back to do better!

What about South America (excluding the AI crap in Mexico)? Has noone been and had a bad experience in 34 pages (I've only skimmed but couldn't see any references)? We went to Rio de Janeiro during Carnival and unfortunately (for this thread) had the best time ever! What a place. Crazy and beautiful.

We had a holiday in Colombia earlier this year. We had an amazing time.

IsItSnowing · 15/07/2025 12:47

I loved South America - Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia. Hoping to spend more time there in the future.
I really like Paris. It's a really vibrant city with so much to see and do. But I like just wandering around cities especially ones with a river to walk along. Also, I love a good museum and Paris has plenty.
I also quite like Barcelona but then I love the architecture. Also love tapas and wine so that helps. You do need to hold onto your bag there although I think that's true of a lot of cities. Eating late is a Spanish thing so we tend to have a leisurely lunch instead as eating so late really isn't our preference.

Honestly what is wrong with people? It's like complaining that 'everytime I've been to Val d'Isere its always snowed. Or 'In fact most of the time I've been to Cairo it's always sunny' .....

the80sweregreat · 15/07/2025 13:36

Fair enough re my rain comments, but it’s odd that Truro ( in particular) I’ve never seen in the sunshine ! lol But I did go there many years ago

Crikeyalmighty · 15/07/2025 13:45

@IsItSnowing I get you on that - I’m just at airport on way back from Mallorca and a lot of 9 to 9.30 dinners going on here - if you go out at 7.15 to 8.30 it can be a bit dead in places — whereas at 3 to4 pm places are heaving - I’m with you on the eating so late - next time I think I’m going to do proper 3.30 meals!! And a small single snack/tapas at9pm

Crikeyalmighty · 15/07/2025 13:50

@Knowsley I don’t think many places on the coast (excluding Bournemouth area) are that dissimilar to Cornwall though- Bridport, Lyme, swanage etc - I appreciate Lake District is totally different to Dorset -but would rather go to Scotland - I’ve been a few times and found it unfriendly, expensive , not that high standards and just ‘not me’ - I get that others may love it

Knowsley · 15/07/2025 17:40

@Crikeyalmighty ,The coast near to the Lake District is underrated.
You can't really compare the Lake District with Scotland, because you're comparing a national park with a country, or 912 square miles with 30,977 square miles.

Dorset is lovely, but I've not explored the coast. I've been to about 3 places on the coast there, none of which were like the places I've been to in Cornwall, although Swanage did seem like a typical British coastal town.

There are a lot of places worth visiting in the UK. Take waterproofs and suntan lotion.

GarlicMetre · 15/07/2025 20:51

Take waterproofs and suntan lotion. And make sure your clothes can be layered! Essential advice for a UK holiday 😂☀⛈

The Dorset coastline is stunning and unique - known as The Jurassic Coast - its a World Heritage Site https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jurassic_Coast.

Have a look at unspoilt Studland Bay, Durdle Door, Lulworth Cove, Chesil Beach, West Bay, Burton Bradstock, Golden Cap, Hengisbury Head.....

Knowsley · 17/07/2025 16:03

@Archert ,I have been to some of those.

mollyminniemo · 10/08/2025 19:51

France, every place I’ve visited and been a few. The people= let’s face it, they can’t stand the Brits!! The landscape- gorgeous in some places when you spend time travelling around, there are some really grotty/ rough/ tatty towns and parts of the countryside. The food- HUGELY overrated!! The arrogance assumes they can dump anything on a plate (usually hugely simple ) and the lack of a finesse /creativity with creating an interesting dish means you just need to suck it up. Give me Greece/ Italy/ Balearics/ Spain any day. France is so average.

Totally disagree. Thankfully we all have different experiences or we'd all be vying for the same spots!

That's interesting as it's literally the direct opposite of my experience in France, and we go quite often in our campervan.

I find people in general very courteous and friendly. I enjoy practicing my rather shite French and they're very tolerant - occasionally we bump into someone that used to live in the UK and they're always keen to chat for ages in English.

All countries have grotty bits but a bit of research means you can easily avoid those, and in general it's a far cleaner and better maintained country than the UK, and also they have a lot more space for the same population.

I love the food. They do everything so well. Love my morning visit to the nearest boulangerie, and that it doesn't have to be an artisan £5 sourdough place to get something really good.

For really filthy, grim, grotty bits, Italy beats France hands down, plus the staring gets tiresome.

Perfectlystill · 10/08/2025 21:44

The Lake District. So much traffic on the roads, unfriendly locals, dirty house we rented. Never again.

Goingawayistricky · 10/08/2025 22:19

We drove across France and had great stays everywhere we went. Even the service stations were lively ( toilets excluded).
Such a contrast to the first stop back on the M20. Loud, rough families yelling at their kids running amok as the parents stood in line for Burger King/ Subway and other grotty chains.

SquallyShowersLater · 10/08/2025 23:12

Not a holiday I have actually taken, thank God, but I had to spend a few hours in Great Yarmouth for business the other week. I've never been before and had heard it had gone downhill in recent years. Like all those 'kiss me quick, arcade on the pier' type resorts it's very much an aquired taste and not really my thing, I'll admit.

But Christ on a bike, what an utter shit hole. I wasn't exactly expecting Southwold but it was so much worse than I ever imagined. I left feeling completely depressed and like I needed to scrub myself in the shower to wash the place off.

On the way back to the car park I met a nice looking Scottish family and they asked me for directions to the beach and town centre. I had to fight the urge to apologise to them for what they were about to experience. I wanted to tell them to get straight back in their car and drive somewhere, anywhere else, because if this was to be their abiding impression of Norfolk, god help them.

Torrevieja, Spain - and southern Spain in general. I don’t like the landscape (too dry, rocky and barren of trees), find the food oily and repetitive, and the people not particularly friendly.

Same - felt unsafe and uneasy from the moment I got there. For good reason, our villa was broken into on the second night.
