Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

Because you seemed to expect more than what was on offer? Surely you looked at the resort, its facilities etc. were you expecting clubs and shops selling loads of fake bags? Your disappointment was based on your ignorance of the type of resort it was 🤷‍♀️

You shouldn’t really be trying to force your views on someone wise. She didn’t like it, end of.

Melbourne. Cultural wasteland and nothing to boast about in terms of a modern city either I.e. like Miami, New York.

Go to Perth and then tell me Melbourne is a cultural wasteland! (I love Melbourne, but find Perth pretty much as you describe Melbourne).

My disappointing destination was Fuerteventura. No scenery, beaches too windy to swim off, full of drunk people. Not my sort of place at all.

I'm not trying to force my views on anyone! It's like someone saying " I went to the zoo and it was full of animals" 🤷‍♀️

Porto- felt very grey and shabby. There wasn’t much to see apart from churches (which I like but it got repetitive). I was unlucky with the weather and it rained a bit. Lots of construction work going on in the city and it took ages to cross the road sometimes.

EuclidianGeometryFan · 10/07/2025 15:10

I loved Tunisia, but specifically the Roman ruins.
Not interested in beaches.

We hired a car, had a good guide book, and spent a week just driving and finding a new hotel each night and gawping at the astonishing ruins. Things that in Europe would be fenced off and have a gift shop and restaurant and cost an arm and a leg to see, were just out in the open completely abandoned and unattended.

Apparently the Roman ruins in Libya are even better, but I would not recommend going there to find out.

It’s a lovely place to live though, great restaurants, major sporting events and reasonable theatre. At least it was 20 years ago when I lived and worked there.

In terms of destinations, I went to Ellis Island in New York when I was much younger. Never EVER again. Really bad vibe, felt claustrophobic and very stressed as soon as I set foot on it. Lifted a soon as I left.

Glastonbury. Again, very bad vibe (which eased a bit in the lovely church grounds, but not completely). I was looking forward to it but couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Ellis island is one of my life defining visits. I found it beyond fascinating and was absolutely captivated in the role it played

Generally, I’ve had more enjoyment from the cheaper bargain holidays where my expectations were low and anything pleasant felt an extra. It’s tough for a fancy holiday to live up to the highest expectations and there’s bound to be a holiday over comedown to deal with too.

Las Vegas for me. I thought I’d love it and find it really fun but I hated it.

Same here. Put me off American cities for life. DD adores it and has been 3 times.

I did however love the Grand Canyon and I really enjoyed the scenery and places we drove through to get to it.

munchingmunch · 10/07/2025 15:16

I've been to places mentioned on here and enjoyed them eg Santorini, Las Vegas, Malta. Disappointed in Barcelona thoughPart from the Gaudi stuff it was very meh.

munchingmunch · 10/07/2025 15:17

Yes Kefalonia is a bit boring & didn't like Tenerife either.

alexalisten · 10/07/2025 15:17

TheignT · 10/07/2025 15:17

munchingmunch · 10/07/2025 15:18

Santorini- sunsets are just sunsets, overcrowded and expensive

I went to Santorini about 20 years ago and it was lovely then. Not too busy, very pretty.

I did and they are, truly truly amazing.

Knowsley · 10/07/2025 15:19

@SoftPillow @tartyflette ,I absolutely loved it. I've been back a few times and would go there more times.
I think it depends where you go there, as it can be a bit like comparing the Isle of Wight to Blackpool.

@TheignT , @EuclidianGeometryFan ,I would love to go to Libya.

Luckyingame · 10/07/2025 15:19

Calabria. 70 years backwards, false pride, nothing anywhere, mediocre food, conservatism. Never more (everyone else I know has been there, says never more). 😕

Ok 😂 have a nice day

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 10/07/2025 15:20

Icelamd was a disappointment after seeing New Zealand's thermal activity.

Least favourite popular city is Barcelona.

Dodgiest place in my life was Memphis.

Exactly - Santorini itself is beautiful, it’s the tourists that spoil it 😂

France one year in Eurocamp. Black flies infestation on site , so in pool , mobile home with the addition of ants . Beach too windy and deep drops in water so afraid for kids. No decent restaurants nearby . And also rained . And smelled bad . Merde.

Cripes, this gives me the horrors. We have often Eurocamped and it's a gamble for sure.
I once cancelled and rebooked elsewhere after I read about a hairy caterpillar infestation on TripAdvisor

That was completely the opposite experience I had of Malta! We went for 10 days and explored a different town/ancient site/museum/fort etc every day. Going back this year and there's loads more we want to see.

We only had one afternoon at the pool.

Same here! I would say Malta was one of the most active holidays we've ever had in terms of sight-seeing and moving around?!

munchingmunch · 10/07/2025 15:22

Are people really shocked that Tunisia isn't great & women get hassled?!
