Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

I am shocked by some of these destinations e.g. St Lucia - I got married there earlier this year (it’s an absolutely beautiful Caribbean island and the people are wonderful). Florence also surprised me, such a pretty and charming northern Italian city.

Agree with Lille, stopped off there before getting the ferry home from Paris, and there was barely anything to do and was quite dull. Looks very nice in some online photos I saw on Pinterest however…

mrstambourinewoman · 10/07/2025 14:47

New York for me

Likewise. Everything feels servile, cheap & tacky, with an undertone of deprivation as soon as you leave the Strip. Couldn't wait to leave.

Agreed. No idea why people rave about Malta

Mumsnet seems to hate Malta and I really don't understand why. Presumably people don't research, get there, and are shocked by the lack of sandy beaches and the fact you can get around the main Island in an afternoon.

Malta is fabulous!! Enjoyed many family trips there and it was the first holiday DH and I went on.

olderbutwiser · 10/07/2025 14:48

Marrakesh. Grabby grubby everywhere, food really poor, endless hassle.

DawdlingDog · 10/07/2025 14:50

Norway - northern lights, got photos but couldn’t see them with the naked eye
Paris - a latrine for a kilometre around the Gare du Nord and much of the rest a slum. Still got some nice bits but fewer then before
Morocco - really hostile and aggressive hassling of women
Most Christmas markets

RampantIvy · 10/07/2025 14:52

Tunisia
Paris
I liked Bali but was disappointed at just how touristy it was and how much ribbon development there is along all the roads, and this was nearly 30 years ago.

onehorserace · 10/07/2025 14:52

Cape Town and Sun City. Too many metal bars, getting frisked before entering a restaurant on the waterfront, too windy, disappointing shops and general sense of security all over. Bullet holes through many of the road signs en route to Sun City which was like Butlins.

SameOldMe · 10/07/2025 14:55

I absolutely loved Marrakech, been 3 times now ! Wouldn't go in the summer too hot, but winter is beautiful. Loved the food, people and the architecture is just so beautiful. It really depends what you like to do on holiday, my favourite destinations have been the ones where I've spent the least money, 2 star accommodation and then spent time exploring, eating where the locals eat, loads of activities and not a beach in sight!

Figcherry · 10/07/2025 14:13

St Lucia, beautiful but no architecture, nothing to do other than water sports or sunbathing.

Curious about what you mean by no architecture?

smileymylie25 · 10/07/2025 14:56

Maldives, it is absolutely stunning don’t get me wrong but so boring!! Literally jet skis or sunbathing is all we could do and it only took 10 minutes to walk around the island

Parky04 · 10/07/2025 14:56

Las Vegas. Actually had prostitutes approach us whilst in a bar asking if we wanted sex. This happened multiple times. The hotels are dated. Visiting the Grand Canyon was good though.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 10/07/2025 14:56

Centre Parcs. Overpriced and underwhelming. Damp, cramped and mouldy accommodation. And there are only so many bike rides and walks you can do in one week! Without doubt, the most boring holiday I’ve ever been on.

But surely you knew this before going? 🤷‍♀️

minnienono · 10/07/2025 14:57

Bruges Christmas market, overpriced Chinese imports and greasy food, crowded beyond a joke and it poured with rain (this i admit isn’t their fault, if everything else was ok and not as crowded it would have been ok with umbrellas)

I was just answering the question in the op. It was my most disappointing place I’ve been why does whether I knew before or not make any difference to my answer?

Stockholm - the dullest few days of my life

I am not a fan of Barcelona either. Dusty, crowded, sketchy muggers lurking on every corner.

I'm another Barcelona hater. I've travelled in almost 50 countries, including some with serious travel advisories. Barcelona is the only place I got properly ripped off. Sketchy as fuck. However, I did quite like it.

LA is a hellhole.

Caramelty · 10/07/2025 15:01

Disneyworld Florida. I became unwell after the flight and that wrecked the first week. Then it just seemed hot and kind of average and unhelpful for what was a ludicrously expensive trip. Eg It was impossible to buy a cup of coffee in animal Kingdom unless you queued up for ages

I enjoy European theme parks a lot more

RampantIvy · 10/07/2025 15:02

I forgot Dublin.
I enjoyed looking around New Orleans, but felt unsafe and so many people tried to rip us off.

Because you seemed to expect more than what was on offer? Surely you looked at the resort, its facilities etc. were you expecting clubs and shops selling loads of fake bags? Your disappointment was based on your ignorance of the type of resort it was 🤷‍♀️

StrawberryCranberry · 10/07/2025 15:03

Marrakesh - the medinas are ok for a day, but apart from that there didn't seem to be much to do (non Muslims are not allowed into the mosques, unlike in other Muslim countries). We did a couple of day trips into the Atlas Mountains and enjoyed those. But the city itself was a bit disappointing.

FurForksSake · 10/07/2025 15:04

Dominican Republic, food poisoning, couldn’t leave the compound unless on a trip, pretty bit boring.

Soulfulunfurling · 10/07/2025 15:04

Marrakesh - the undercurrent was menacing and feels like a tinder box, so much poverty whilst not an issue as such was motivating the high crime rate.

LA/Hollywood. Bloody hell what a total festering hell hole.

France - the villages where people go to die and literally nothing moves, even the flies have given up, soulless.

outdooryone · 10/07/2025 15:04

Everyplace that has mass tourism - Paris, Lisbon, Krakow, Amsterdam, Florence, Pisa etc. They were all just chaotic, overpriced and commercialised.
Florence - as I was working there, the morning walk through the city centre at 7:30am was superb, and I ended up getting up really early to explore the streets for the 10 days I was there...

wwyd2021medicine · 10/07/2025 15:06

Sorrento
Tiny beaches so would be no good for sunbathing - very little space with all sunbeds right next to each other and no good for little walks up and down the beach.
Town itself too small to be entertaining for more than 2 days max. Nowhere to walk to because of narrow windy roads.
Didn't find any feasible walks and those that were seemed guarded by dogs according to all trails and similar.
Barely enough exercise to work up an appetite tbh
Food and Pompei good though.
