Most disappointing destination/holiday

For me, it was the Norwegian fjords. Not because they weren’t beautiful (what we saw of them, they were!) but because it was cold, rainy and foggy when we went. One town known for being very pretty was ridiculously busy and there was a cruise ship blocking the view from the restaurant we booked. We knew the prices were going to be high, but expected good quality… when you pay over £100 for a train ticket, you expect there to be toilet roll and soap in the toilets!

where have you been that was disappointing?

@SquallyShowersLater I felt that way in Torquay and exmouth and Teignmouth - which are improvements on yarmouth but crikey had they gone downhill -

The Lake District. So much traffic on the roads, unfriendly locals, dirty house we rented. Never again.

The Lake District is my happy place but you have to get out of the main honeypots and into the fells, and avoid at the busiest times of year.

It is delightful in autumn. Just pack waterproofs!

Osaka. As a lone female traveller I was completely unsafe.

Wow! May I ask why please?

I’m a South Africa and I think Sun City is terrible and wouldn’t recommend it to a soul. Such a far way to travel for a shit hole.

Cape Town on the other hand is magnificent. So much more to it than the waterfront. I have travelled a fair amount and I don’t think there is another more beautiful city in the world.

But it is so dangerous and this marrs the beauty for me.

We are just about to book Japan. Can you say what you didn’t like about it?

We went to Tokyo for a holiday in May 2013, the weather was very good and we enjoyed it all very much.
But it is totally different from anywhere else I have ever been. It was so unfamiliar that it was perhaps a little disorienting at first and I was glad I booked a 'European' style hotel just to retreat to at the end of the day.
(But I loved the toilets! Even the one at the fish market was spotless.)
It's hard to explain, I have lived in the Middle East (not Dubai) and South Africa and have spent several periods of up to three months at a time in both France and Spain but I felt like a stranger, almost an interloper, in Japan. Don't get me wrong, the politeness is legendary but there was a real barrier, and not just language.
On the other hand we enjoyed wonderful food and scenery and would happily go again. I suppose I just had a bad case of culture shock, I'll be better prepared next time!

Never been to Torquay but I've heard enough to know it won't be my sort of place. Don't know much about Teignmouth. Exmouth is a weird one. Absolutely stunning, wide, flat beach where you can walk out for miles, and some beautiful, very expensive residential areas on the outskirts, but the weirdest most soulless town centre ever with no actual heart to it, in both senses of the phrase. It doesn't have any charm or atmosphere, no decent shops or restaurants that we could see anyway, and it doesn't seem to have an actual centre to the town either. Confused

Crikeyalmighty · 12/08/2025 09:50

@SquallyShowersLater teignmouth is more of the same -

Crikeyalmighty · 12/08/2025 09:52

@SquallyShowersLater I did however love Topsham and Totnes

DayInTime · 12/08/2025 14:46

Torrevieja, Spain - and southern Spain in general. I don’t like the landscape (too dry, rocky and barren of trees), find the food oily and repetitive, and the people not particularly friendly.

@wordywitch& @Nodancingshoes Torrevieja is one tiny part of southern Spain, you can't right off an area the size it is, from one Brit heavy resort town.

We've just travelled for four and a half hours between two cities in southern Spain. No issues at all with people. Cordoba for instance is absolutely beautiful and a real melting pot of ethnicity, due to its very long history. So inclusive, felt so safe.

I left my bag in a restaurant last night. Handed in and kept safe by the staff when I returned to collect it.

Good for you. It’s a subjective thread, you don’t need to try to prove anyone wrong with your own subjective experience.

What's great for one person won't be for another. All sorts of things come into it, a group of 18 year olds want something different to a family with young children, the elderly and disabled will probably be looking for certain facilities that wouldn't matter to fit healthy younger people. There probably won't be a place that is number one for everyone or most disappointing.

Good example of what I was saying about different demographics. Don't go to Totnes if you struggle with hills. We parked at the top of the town, nearly 80 disabled husband got half way down the main road and couldn't get up or down I had to find a side road, left him there, went to get the car and picked him up. So lovely for some, nightmare for others.

ArtTheClown · 13/08/2025 08:39

@tartyflette I weirdly felt a bit like that in Rio. Ive also lived in Africa and the Middle East but I just couldn't gel with it.
Maybe I prefer my former colonies to have been British 😂

whiteroseredrose · 13/08/2025 08:42

My lovely MIL used to say that how much you enjoy a holiday is not entirely about the place. It can depend on the time of year you go, so busy or quieter, hot and sunny, cooler or rainy. Also who you go with, whether you all get on, or not, and in their case who you meet there. They often got chatting to others.

Barcelona is my favourite city and I’ve been there several times (although not in a decade or more). Always gone in the colder seasons though. We loved Iceland but went in August 2020 when it was very quiet.

The only places I haven’t liked were Dubai (with work) and Las Vegas. Both were just heat and hotels.

Add your variables to my variables and it's a wonder anywhere can become very popular. I never recommended a holiday destination to anyone, I'd just get the blame when they hate it.

Absolutely. We didn't have a great time in Istanbul, but I know other people love it. The weather was quite grey and oppressive, which made the pollution worse. My daughter had just come back from a year 6 residential and was exhausted and miserable. But I'd very happily give it another go!

Crikeyalmighty · 13/08/2025 10:02

@irregularegular it’s so very true - Istanbul was one of my best city breaks, mid May - a lovely 26 degrees every day, blue skys, great food too and loved the vibe, the indoor markets , the little sailing boats, call to prayer etc - loved Marrakech too - whereas others I know hate it - yes there was a bit of touting hassle but they were amateurs compared to Egypt ( which I hated) - I once had a very shit holiday on an idyllic Greek island - business issues ongoing whilst away, a direct debit taken for 3 times what it should have been - was genuinely concerned we would run out of cash etc etc -and this was before the days you could transfer from one account to another in blink of an eye

the80sweregreat · 13/08/2025 11:08

One man’s meat is another ones poison when it comes to holidays. I know people who would never go AI anywhere. I was disappointed with Zante and I like the Greek islands , but others love it there. ( was years ago though )
I guess a lot is about the accommodation and food / weather , if your ill or not , what the resort is like which can sometimes be hit or miss. I was speaking to an ex holiday rep once who made the comment ‘ some people only come on holiday to moan ‘ but then they probably deal with more complaints than hearing about the good things!

Blueberry1990 · 13/08/2025 12:02

Sri Lanka - the only country I've been and hated

TheaBrandt1 · 13/08/2025 13:06

Ooh why? It was vaguely on my radar

Las Vegas for me. I thought I’d love it and find it really fun but I hated it.

We really hate it too, it’s a marmite place.
