If abroad ( which is more likely) and its day time.. change into swimsuit and get on the lounger.. if evening.. have shower.. get changed go to restaurant.. ( so on Thursday whenl get to Lanzarote.. it will be late..)

First thing we do is wipe down all surfaces, light switches, TV remotes, bathroom taps etc., and re-wash any cups/glasses. I used to be a "maid" when I was a teenager and would never trust a hotel room or holiday cottage etc to be anywhere near cleaned properly. I also observed poor cleaning practices, once on holiday when it was raining and we stayed in our apartment when the cleaner came in. She had one cloth and one spray with her, and went up to do the bathroom first, then she came down and started wiping the kitchen surfaces with the same cloth she'd just wiped the bathroom with - err, no thanks, we asked her to leave and didn't let the cleaners in for the remaining few days and did it ourselves!!

@KThnxBye I guess you don't own a lot of linen? 😅 I'm not going out to dinner in a crushed dress!

I am absolutely unwilling to sacrifice even 20 minutes of rare, extremely hard won, extremely expensive holiday time, in trade for a non wrinkly dress, linen or no linen. I just don’t care enough clearly.

Same, or to wipe down remote controls and light switches etc.

Boil the kettle then empty the water out, wash all the crockery, cutlery and glass ware, then clean the loo seats.

Do you clean the loo seats at work or if you need to use a public toilet?

Polishedshoesalways · 22/04/2024 18:31

Once I have checked I am willing to stay and it’s spotless. Crack open the wine, put some music on - unpack - shower and go out for dinner in that order.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 22/04/2024 19:02

Suitcases in rooms
Open the blinds and look through the windows, open them if it's stuffy
Make cup of tea
Unpack
Get changed
Drive / walk to shop for snack, booze and breakfast supplies *
Go out for drink and/or food

(* although if we've arrived in the morning and can't get into accommodation til the afternoon then we will do this on the way. )

Wash all the inventory......housekeeper here and I know that shit might look clean but take it from me it's not!

I wash everything before use - even at home!
Because some geniuses leave the cupboard doors open too long... I opened it once and a spider scuttled out. Eurgh.

I’ve never been sick or died after staying in a holiday let.

Well good for you, long may it continue.

EatCrow · 21/04/2024 23:42

Same! I also worked for a cleaning company in my youth and I know exactly what tricks they pull. (Shudders).

Oh come on. You have to tell us now. Why is something not clean when it looks and feels clean?

HeadDeskHeadDesk · 22/04/2024 19:11

I like to get unpacked as soon as possible. If it's self catering I might wait to unpack and go out for some food supplies first.

What if the cleaner has used the cloth that they've just wiped around the toilet to use to wipe the cups/glasses??

"Looking" clean doesn't mean there aren't any germs, bacteria, etc.

Forr several years I've employed the MN 'hack' of getting shopping delivered to the holiday cottage the afternoon we arrive.
I do like to get unpacked and have a nosy about.

Thatsthewayitisnt · 22/04/2024 19:20

I do this too.

I bet they do

TheChosenTwo · 22/04/2024 19:25

Wow, some very paranoid people here! Never have I ever cleaned anything before using in a holiday property and I’ve never been ill from licking a remote control or light switch 😂
I’ll continue to take my chances for another 40 years!
We find swimmers and jump in the pool closely followed by finding somewhere for a meal and a large drink.

Have you actually observed this?

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 22/04/2024 19:27

Some over the top people here with cleaning.. it's like coughing in a cinema.. one starts then everyone does.
Do you all clean the plates / cutlery in restaurants before you eat or ask to inspect the kitchens?
Life's too short unless you can visabily see its dirty and disgusting.. maybe choose your accommodation better .
We use villas with dishwashers.. never every had dirty things.

PuppetQueen · 22/04/2024 19:29

I put all the air fresheners in a cupboard/ little-used room/outside. I hate air freshers.

Then I have to remember to put them all back on departure day!

RabbitsRock · 22/04/2024 19:30

It used to be pour a large glass of wine but now I’d make a cuppa.

Youmusthavebeentoacapulco · 22/04/2024 19:35

Probably have a wee.
Pour a glass of wine (hopefully there’s one waiting)
Never have I washed or disinfected anything. And I won’t be starting whatever MN says!

Hmm

Wash crockery and cutlery. Clean the washing machine drawer and seal and run it at 90c. Because it’s usually mouldy and coated in bio wash powder.

You seem like a laugh.
