try to get to my room

OP posts:

Check around and take bags to room.

Cuppa or a glass of fizz depending on the time of day.

If its somewhere completely new to us, I check the bedlinen and pillows, look at the towels and check out the general stock of things.

In a hotel, check what the bath is like, check room is clean and relax.

LauderSyme · 22/04/2024 14:41

Investigate the whole place including kitchen, bathroom and outdoor spaces, put luggage in the bedrooms, stick the kettle on, enjoy a reviving cuppa then unpack.

jelly79 · 22/04/2024 15:06

Go see the balcony / terrace / view

muddyford · 22/04/2024 15:17

Put the kettle on and take bags to the right rooms, unpack dog beds and put water down for them.

muddyford · 22/04/2024 15:18

And if it's a nice day I'll open the windows.

Yes! This. I always like to see what is outside and what view we have. Then quick peek in the bathroom, quick lie on the bed to see if it's comfy. Speedy unpack then straight to the pool followed by a reccy of the immediate area and a trip to the local shop to buy water lays crisps and limonata.

Dh is so different. He isn't bothered by the view. Never goes on the balcony for most of the holiday. He unpacks, puts World news on then lays on the bed. I usually end up alone at the pool the first day with my book

In the UK turn up the heating

I always turn it down!

Anybody else fondly remember the days when you and your mates would book the cheapest week on the sun you could get and it was "accommodation allocated on arrival "? and the suspense of whether you'd be living in a total shit hole a la the Inbetweeners, was heightened by the early hours arrival in the dark?

Following for specific details on

  • how clean dishes are made unclean by cleaners
  • the plasters. Finger on the mirror is meant to be to tell if it's 2-way, not that I can be arsed, but what's with the sockets? Hidden cameras?
AuntieMarys · 22/04/2024 15:49

Check there's a plug near the mirror

Probably being spectacularly thick here but how will these things show if it's a two way mirror?

mitogoshi · 22/04/2024 15:52

Change out of traveling clothes if warmer than here (normal) and head to the bar. I avoid anywhere that's self catering, did years of that when kids were young

Make a cup of tea.

1 - Yep. I've usually made tea before DH has even finished bringing the stuff in from the car.

2 - located the fruit bowl (or another receptacle if there isn't one) and put it on the dining table. We always keep the keys in the fruit bowl on holiday. 😂

BingoMarieHeeler · 22/04/2024 15:54

Put the kettle on, 100%

UnpickThePockets · 22/04/2024 15:56

Open door to balcony / terrace.

Unpack. Check all drawers etc for hidden treasure.

Put bikini on and go and jump in the pool. Swim a bit.

Order large cocktail. Exhale.

TheBirdintheCave · 22/04/2024 15:59

First I have to make sure my three year old is happy (does he need the toilet, water etc).

Next I explore the rooms to work out where everything is (locate the ironing board and tea towels etc) then unpack and rest for a little bit before heading out to the shops to get some breakfast items in.

Our next holiday is the first apartment to include a pool so this time we may also factor in a brief swim before going out to dinner :)

evtheria · 22/04/2024 16:09

Have a wander (we usually do cities) and find somewhere nice to have a leisurely coffee (treat fizzy drink for DS) and get the 'feel' of the place.

I've seen videos on this, apparently the reflection of your finger won't be as close. I cannot tell the difference.

Hmmmbetterchangethis · 22/04/2024 16:15

I like to find the welcome pack and read all the rules!!

walnutcoffeecake · 22/04/2024 16:19

OMG so do we.

It must look like a swinger's party 🤣🤣

spiderlight · 22/04/2024 16:58

Check the garden is secure for our dog. Then wee, tea, wi-fi code.

KThnxBye · 22/04/2024 17:06

Ironing Board?! No!

We all run in, adults and kids of all ages, run around the whole place and explore, calling dibs on bedrooms, opening all the cupboards to see what we have, get to grips with the layout, run about outside looking at the grounds, garden, hot tub whatever we have. I say run because we literally do, it’s the most exciting part of the whole holidays for me! Then we pretty much instantly start the cooking and open the wine. Oven is always on within about 15 mins of arrival.

I have never ever used an ironing board on holiday!

TheBirdintheCave · 22/04/2024 17:23

@KThnxBye I guess you don't own a lot of linen? 😅 I'm not going out to dinner in a crushed dress!
