Wherever it was, what's the most posh, luxurious, ostentatious, etc hotel you have ever stayed in? Was it worth the cost?

Not nearly as luxurious but Radisson Blu Bangkok. Only paid £55 per night for a massive room in a very central location, lovely walk in shower with a deep bath, good amenities and no fault of the room.

@Franklin12 We got caught in sudden thunderstorm in the Sky Bar at the Banyan Tree Bangkok. The server was asking us to leave and we thought it was because we weren't cool enough to be in such a fabulous bar (and it is fab-u-lous!). Seconds later we were drenched trying to get down the narrow stairs with the crowd! Well worth it though- it is the most fantastic experience and the hotel is wonderful- especially on the club floor.

The best hotel I've stayed in was the Cape Fahn in Koh Samui. www.capefahnhotel.com It's on its own private island and you can have breakfast brought to you in your private pool overlooking the Bay of Thailand. Service is superb and food is excellent.

Also love Gleneagles. Service is efficient but not obsequious and it's such a special place. Rooms are something very special indeed.

Business, not holiday, but I stayed in several of the Taj chain of hotels in India a number of years ago. The surroundings were lovely but it was the staff that were the biggest diifference to anywhere else I have stayed. The service was incredible. In fact to be honest I found it a bit overbearing initially. One night I dropped my fork in the restaurant and honestly, it seemed like one waiter caught it before it even hit the floor whilst another handed me a clean one instantly. I was a bit shocked at how quickly I got used to it actually. DH picked me up from the airport when I returned home and I just stood by the side of the car for a couple of minutes til it dawned on me that nobody was going to open the door for me! I'd only been gone a few weeks but in that time had got too accustomed to being waited on hand and foot. The bubble was well and truly burst as we opened the front door though, and one of the kids shouted "What's for tea Mum?" 😂

I am absolutely loving this thread. I’ve just inherited some money and although I’m going to spend most of it very sensible I’ve decided to have a week away first and do stuff I’ll never be able to do again. So much inspiration on here.

The Peninsula Hong Kong was about the poshest. The Rasa Sayang in Penang is my favourite hotel, it feels luxurious yet still cosy without being ostentatious.

Hotel Loews in Monte Carlo - think it's changed its name since though.

@Jabbawasarollingstone

The Savoy, about 23 years ago.

I decided then that luxury hotels are fine if you like that sort of thing. I didn't like the Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am, three bags full Ma'am -type service. I have stayed in 3-stars ever since Grin. I find 5* plus superfluous to my needs.

I agree - find it all a bit 1980s and naff now. Like Rowan Atkinson in love actually. Smile

The michelberger in Berlin was the last hotel I stayed in, very much not 5 star but felt genuinely cool and relaxed. People go to the lobby bar for a chilled DJ evening.

I used to love hotels but now I can't forget the whole jizz thing.

Have been lucky enough to stay in lots of luxe hotels including 7*. My favourite is Oberoi Delhi. Had a suite and butler. My colleague was in the next suite and we didn’t want to sleep because it was so nice. Yes worth every penny of my expenses 😀

The Fullerton in Singapore, it was for our honeymoon 20 years ago. It was wonderful.

@Jabbawasarollingstone I used like to stay at the George in Edinburgh, with its old world Edinburgh class, until they "did it up". Over £1m at that time, and badly spent. Another minimalist box with tan furniture, when that was a new thing.

The Fullerton, Singapore

A pillow menu!

I’ve stayed in more fun and characterful places though.

@AmberRoseGold we were meant to be staying at the Oberoi Cecil as I liked the history of the place . Our hotel was changed due to concerns raised by previous guests and I was really disappointed. Would you not recommend the Cecil?

Waldorf Astoria in New York - it was amazing

I have to say the lobby was amazing, but found the rooms pretty standard.

I agree - I stayed there for 4 days once and I rejected FIVE totally faded and rather grubby and depressing rooms - some with cracked dirty bathroom tiles and damaged furniture - before I gave up and accepted one marginally less bad. Wouldn’t walk around the room barefoot though - that’s how yucky it was.

It was the best bed I have ever slept in and we kept finding little unexpected touches in the room. The bed was a available to buy but sadly too expensive to get home!

Four Seasons Sydney, I was given a free upgrade when I was checking in, when I got up to my room I was gobsmacked by the view! Huge window overlooking the harbour, amazing service, lovely staff, delicious food! I want to go back! This was the sunrise I could see lying in bed.

@sandgrown Cecil was fine and yes historic but catering to high end local visitors more I think so, to me, had less charming local touches and more generic flashy ones. Even breakfast was more international than wildflower hall which had Ayurvedic juices etc..

The Banyan Tree Bangkok roof restaurant is staggering however there is no cover that I saw so goodness knows what they did if it rained. You would I guess be brought inside which isn’t the same thing at all!

We were mid meal there when the waiting staff could see a storm coming, they suddenly took all our food and drinks and had us follow them down to the restaurant a couple of floors below. It was all quite exciting really. God that was an amazing steak!

Another evening we were on the rooftop for drinks and a storm passed nearby and you could feel the electrical charge from the lightning in the air, it was so eerie. Loved our stay there, we were on honeymoon.

We had a suite in the Towers part of the Waldorf Astoria. Brad and Angelina were upstairs. Lounge access with drinks and snacks. Our own bar. Chelsea Harbour Hotel - suite with huge balcony. I lived weekdays for several months in the Four Seasons in Dublin - that was fab, especially the breakfasts and bumping into famous people. De Tuilerieen in Bruges.

@incognitodorrito There are various 'not a real study' things on the amount of bodily fluids in various locations and hotel headboards (and basically anything that isn't changed like sheets in hotels) are Shock. Alas the rankness wasn't confined to the budget end :-D

There are various vids around where they use ultraviolet light to show up bodily fluids - hilarious and revolting in equal measure.

@LadyFlumpalot re the Newt, what's nice as a hotel guest is that there is a largel private part of the garden only available to hotel guests. So when we stayed we visited the fantastic public part, then retreated into the Alice in Wonderland style guests only areas, which were actually quite extensive. There's a badminton court hidden by thick topiary hedges where there's a phone box that you can call fir drinks and snacks. Like a hidden world!
