Wherever it was, what's the most posh, luxurious, ostentatious, etc hotel you have ever stayed in? Was it worth the cost?

@PossiblyDreaming - I too liked to pretend I was a writer closeted away!!! Sorry to hear the owners treated you, and others, so badly though - that takes the shine off.

PossiblyDreaming · 12/01/2022 18:02

@PeonyAndSweetpea it’s got different owners now, thankfully. I’ll go back one day, it’s only down the road from me, I just need someone to take with me!

PeonyAndSweetpea · 12/01/2022 18:14

@PossiblyDreaming lucky you living in such a lovely part of the country!

PeonyAndSweetpea · 12/01/2022 18:19

@Verite1 @Inastatus you need to go back to the Maldives and try the "glamping" on Amilla - the Baa Atoll. Reserve one of the bubble tents - a totally unique experience and well worth it

Some of these look amazing.
For me my favourite was Oberoi Wildflower Hall in the Himalayas just before Christmas. So cold and beautiful.
Nikoi island was fun- speedboat to reach private island, sea trampoline etc.. But felt a bit sweaty.
Marina Bay Sands and Banyan Tree were spendy but didn’t feel special like Wildflower Hall.

Mena House in Cairo with a gorgeous view of the Pyramids.

We were living in UAE and there was one day of amazing deals to celebrate 1 year to Expo 2020. I woke up at 4am and got a hotel room at the Address Fountain Views in Dubai for 20% of the normal price. It was brand new and had a view right out to the burj Khalifa and was a suite with the biggest bathroom I have ever seen. They brought up a cot for my son with beautiful linen on it and baby bath set. Every hotel room looks a little bland now.

Raffles Singapore, complete with our own butler. We were travelling at the time and it cost way more for 2 nights than the sum total of the previous 3 weeks backpacking. Luckily, it was a very generous gift, couldn’t / wouldn’t have paid it otherwise.

@AmberRoseGold. I am so jealous. I had to cancel a trip to trip to India where I was planning to have afternoon tea at Wildflower Hall .

I am taking notes on this thread. For when I feel brave enough to venture a bit further!

Oh I'm just down the road from the Newt and visit the gardens a lot, often wondered what it's like inside the hotel and if it would be worth the price! Would you mind giving a bit more detail?

I stayed at The Newt this summer and, whilst lovely, it was not hugely posh. The rooms are very well designed, all seem to have an integral bar/coffee spot and bathroom decor is seriously cool and nice to use.
The farmhouse area, away from the main hotel building, has a great, very Scandi-feel, free to use bar in the centre of the buildings. It is nice to be able to hop on the buggy's to zoom around the estate. The spa, once again, beautifully designed but is not really large enough to find a secluded area by the pool.
Some days the grounds were quite full of day trippers.
The food is not Michelin standard and the staff are of variable quality, mostly excellent.
Such an interesting place though, I'm glad we went.

I wondered if anyone would mention Burgh Island… a different world! Not traditional luxury but the most amazing experience - the Agatha Christie beach house with hot tub looks fabulous, I’ve requested that for my next visit!

PeonyAndSweetpea · 12/01/2022 18:54

@RTHJ14 - you will love it! It's equally amazing on a stormy day as a sunny one!

@PeonyAndSweetpea - sounds amazing, I’m going to Google that later. We are going back to the Maldives at Easter (fingers crossed) Reethi Beach with our teen DC. Postponed since Easter 2020. I really hope it happens this year 🤞🏻🤞🏻

Livpool · 12/01/2022 19:01

Waldorf Astoria in New York - it was amazing

Butterfly44 · 12/01/2022 19:04

Following for ideas Smile

RaskolnikovsGarret · 12/01/2022 19:05

Duke Hotel in Malta. Large swimming pools on our balconies.

VaginaRegina · 12/01/2022 19:07

3 standouts:

The Sukhothai in Bangkok
The Palace in Tokyo
The Parkhotel in Vitznau, which has the maddest themed rooms you've ever seen.

AmberRoseGold · 12/01/2022 19:08

@sandgrown I hope you’ll get to go there sometime soon. Conversely would not bother with Oberoi Cecil in Shimla if choice.

Sexnotgender · 12/01/2022 19:10

The Balmoral in Edinburgh. Was lovely.

Words · 12/01/2022 19:11

The Cataract Hotel at Aswan.

WakeUpLockie · 12/01/2022 19:12

Chedi Club in Ubud Bali. Had an exclusive butler (have stayed other places where you have a butler but they serve a few different rooms). Was incred tbh!

babasaclover · 12/01/2022 19:13

@RaskolnikovsGarret is that in Gozo? I walk past it this year looked immense

Thank you, that's very helpful Smile I do like visiting for a few hours, when it first opened I was all "I'm not paying £100 for us to look around a garden, I have my own garden I barely use" but I was talked into it and we go most weekends now Grin

We made friends with a stag not long ago in the deer park section.

I’m desperate to go to the Newt, it’s near my parents but haven’t made it yet! Looks so pretty!
