Wherever it was, what's the most posh, luxurious, ostentatious, etc hotel you have ever stayed in? Was it worth the cost?

Umaid Bhawan Palace Jodhpur
Oberoi Rajvilas Jaipur
Villa San Michele Florence

Beautiful hotels, worth it. If I had to choose just one I would take a junior suite at V San Michele, you have a small private garden and lots of space. Looking at hotel groups any Oberoi hotel is a safe bet imo.

Le Manoir in Oxfordshire was fab.

Skinnytailedsquirrel · 12/01/2022 15:06

Cliveden House. No not worth it at all (I didn't pay...was a business conference). www.clivedenhouse.co.uk/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=local&utm_campaign=hotel-clivedenhouse

The Corinthia in London was understated and exceptional.

Both Gleneagles and Turnberry are always a real treat. Next on my Scottish list is The Balmoral in Edinburgh for February break.

The Ritz in Paris was glitzy and fabulous but only for a night.

Bunce1 · 12/01/2022 15:08

Oh and the Ritz Carlton in Vail. Very nice and amazing spa.

IGotHam · 12/01/2022 15:09

The W on Lexington Avenue in NY. It's not there now but it was absolutely fabulous. It was the original W I think.

CrumpledCrumpet · 12/01/2022 15:10

Park Hyatt in Tokyo (the hotel in Lost in Translation). We got an upgrade to a preposterously huge suite that had a walk-in wardrobe bigger than some hotel rooms I’ve stayed in!

The Island Shangri-La in Hong Kong www.shangri-la.com/en/hongkong/islandshangrila/

Absolutely beautiful hotel, amazing room service and fantastic restaurants

SilverontheTree · 12/01/2022 15:13

Raffles in Singapore- we had a butler!
Agree that Oberoi hotels are lovely- we have stayed at the one in Lombok and the Mena House and the Hurghada one.
Those were the days!

Agree, had the best service I've ever received at the Corinthia.

Another vote for the Royal Livingstone at Victoria Falls, the setting is just fab!

Verite1 · 12/01/2022 15:19

On yes - forgot about Paris Ritz. That def hit the ostentatious ticket!

Scornedwoman67 · 12/01/2022 15:20

The most outrageously 'blingy' was the Burj Al Arab. Complete with gold plated taps, a remote control that you pressed and a butler appeared and gold flakes on the coffee. The most luxurious & serene was the One & Only on the Palm in Dubai. With our own pool. Simply divine.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 12/01/2022 15:25

The Peninsula in Hong Kong

Shangri-La in Singapore like the poster WhatDidISayAlan

MrsE · 12/01/2022 15:27

Casa Gangotena in Quito. It was the old presidential palace and was just beautiful. Nothing was too much for the staff down to the fact they knew I couldn't eat chocolate so left me other sweets on my pillow instead. As we were upgraded by the travel company we only paid a really low price

Gilda152 · 12/01/2022 15:27

The Royal Mirage, Dubai. Well before the Palm was built so going back a while before Dubai was swamped.

BillyAndTheSillies · 12/01/2022 15:31

Dar Al Masyaf in Dubai, pool for the villa, butlers and the choice of a golf buggy or abra boat along the canal to breakfast each morning.

Similar to a PP we got a room upgrade when we arrived at the Shangri-La in Singapore to a garden suite, that was stunning. Shangri-La in KL also stunning.

Oh and Corals Sands Harbour Island

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 12/01/2022 15:40

Calistoga Ranch in the Napa Valley - though Google tells me it was largely destroyed in the Californian fires a couple of years ago. California king size bed, outside rainfall shower, hot tub, holy moly. Sarah Silverman was having dinner at the table next to us. Stunning place.

On the same trip, the W in San Francisco and Solage resort in Napa. A treat from a very, very generous relative.

More recently, the Europe Hotel in Killarney, a beautiful spot, and Cliff House Hotel in Waterford, my one and only experience of Michelin Star dining.

LondonWolf · 12/01/2022 15:40

The Atlantis in Dubai. It gets sneered at a lot on here but we absolutely loved it and yes with all the little extras and attention to detail, it’s worth it.

Jabbawasarollingstone · 12/01/2022 15:43

The Savoy, about 23 years ago.

I decided then that luxury hotels are fine if you like that sort of thing. I didn't like the Yes Ma'am, No Ma'am, three bags full Ma'am -type service. I have stayed in 3-stars ever since Grin. I find 5* plus superfluous to my needs.

Covidclaire · 12/01/2022 15:46

@DrRamsesEmerson

Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong in 2002. I wasn't paying, the client was. My benchmark for posh hotels ever since, it was utterly lovely.
Agreed. Loved having my laundry done there. And loved being able to get a cold pint of Tetley’s in the Captain’s Bar.

Such a variety of places it’s difficult to say which is the most luxurious. Luxury doesn’t always mean ostentatious. A luxury resort in Fiji for example is actually pretty laid back.

LadyFlumpalot · 12/01/2022 15:47

@interferingma

The Newt in Somerset. Followed by some Namibian wildlife lodges whose names I have shamefully forgotten.
Oh I'm just down the road from the Newt and visit the gardens a lot, often wondered what it's like inside the hotel and if it would be worth the price! Would you mind giving a bit more detail?
Iamblossom · 12/01/2022 15:52

I'd say for wow factor Burgh Island.

Worst was Hotel Fuck in Leverkusen.
