Wherever it was, what's the most posh, luxurious, ostentatious, etc hotel you have ever stayed in? Was it worth the cost?
Cliveden House. No not worth it at all (I didn't pay...was a business conference). www.clivedenhouse.co.uk/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=local&utm_campaign=hotel-clivedenhouse
@Skinnytailedsquirrel - I loved Cliveden - we had the Prince of Wales suite for a long weekend.....it was amazing.

The Beach House at Burgh Island is fabulous too, that was a lovely treat. The view from the hot tub is great.

The Turret Suite at The Witchery is so louche! The free standing silver bath is a dream come true and the breakfast hamper makes for a fun bed picnic.

The Maraka suite in the Maldives is a once in a lifetime experience......it's an underwater suite. It's amazing just being able to see the sealife. I like the glass igloos at Kakslautatten in the Arctic for the views of the Northern Lights.

Metropol in Moscow

ExConstance · 12/01/2022 16:31

The Chatrium in Bangkok. there was some sore of political insurrection going on at the time, though it was a very polite one. As there were few tourists around we were offered a river view suite and lots of extras for a pretty good price. The bathroom was in the centre of the suite and was a glass box, you could pull up the blinds to the box and sit on the toilet looking out over the river. Utter decadence.

Fairmont at Banff Springs. I'm generally used to posh hotels but when I walked in I was sure they were going to throw us out as clearly not belonging there.

Recycledblonde · 12/01/2022 16:43

I love Walwick Hall near Hexham, really luxurious country house feel but also friendly and unstuffy.

ParkheadParadise · 12/01/2022 16:45

Balmoral Edinburgh
Gleneagles
One Devonshire Gardens
The Westbury/Sherbourne Dublin
Four Seasons Cyprus
One & Only The Palm Dubai

Arriving at midnight by speedboat to the Danieli in Venice, lit by candle wall sconces, persian rugs underfoot was very special. The Beckhams arrived while we were there, slightly ruining the ambiance Grin

Love the Langham on 5th Avenue, not too OTT but incredibly comfortable with the best concierge in NYC.

erinaceus · 12/01/2022 16:58

The Cape Grace in Cape Town, on the waterfront.
The Merrion in Dublin.

TeenyQueen · 12/01/2022 16:59

In the UK Claridges. We also had dinner at Fera and everything was just amazing from the champagne to the huge bed, huge room, amazing bathrobes etc.

Fairmont Ajman was brilliant, amazing rooms and facilities, great beach and fantastic staff.

Hard Rock Hotel Macau- great pool and fab room

Our honeymoon hotel in Mauritius was great, more authentic plantation style rather than pure luxury, but staff and food were great.

The Standard High Line in NYC. Been in the lift where Solange slapped Jay Z. Grin

Saradegrey · 12/01/2022 17:04

Fairmont Hotel in San Francisco. The most beautiful hotel in the world. The rooftop bees! The service. The cocktail bar which is like being on an ancient ship. The low-key old school fine manners of the staff. The old photos of Ella Fitzgerald singing in the bar.

I have stayed in hotels in Africa with "personal butlers" etc. I didn't like it - I don't want that kind of service so I always paid them to take a day off with their families.

Onlyabean · 12/01/2022 17:08

Simply because I have never seen a view like it before or since, I have to say the Hotel Eiger, Murren, Switzerland.

I worked at Burgh Island for a summer as a teenager and absolutely loved it when I was in the huge dining room on my own, setting up on a wintry afternoon. I liked to pretend I was in some novel and about to have some marvellous adventure. My only adventure was working there for 60 hours a week for two months and the owners point blank refusing to pay me or any of my colleagues at the end. We had to take them to court and it took nearly a year to get paid. They did it every year to the seasonal staff until new owners took it over. I’ve always held a grudge against it though.

I think the most expensive hotel I’ve stayed at was Silver Sands in Turks and Caicos or The Mark Hotel in New York. Both gorgeous hotels but only so expensive because of the location. My favourite place ever is Pacuare Lodge in the rainforest in Costa Rica. You can only access it by white water rafting, there’s a wine cellar built into a cave, unbelievable food, outdoor showers and you sleep in amazing tree houses. Probably not luxury in the tradition sense but unlike anywhere else I’ve ever stayed.

What's the most luxury hotel you've ever stayed in?

Secrets Cap Cana , Dominican Republic

Gleneagles - not sunny - no beaches but just lovely

BasiliskStare · 12/01/2022 17:19

& agree with Burgh Island

serialgrannie · 12/01/2022 17:20

This thread has really got me thinking. We have had some wonderful travels since our retirement. The best for me would be the Luang Say Residence in Luang Prebang, Laos. We were lucky enough to be on a small group tour and we were allocated this hotel in a change from the advertised one. It had only just opened and I think they got special rates. Well, it was amazing. We were the very first people to occupy our beautiful villa in the garden. The suite was so luxurious with beautiful local fruits, coffee, a fantastic bathroom and a verandah to sit and look at the amazing garden and wildlife. The staff were wonderful, all local people but trained by the French owners. The food was amazing. I think we would have to remortgage the house to stay there now.

megletthesecond · 12/01/2022 17:21

The Oberoi in New Delhi.
My Times of India was delivered every morning in it's own fancy cotton bag along with room service breakfast.

WakkaWakkaWakka · 12/01/2022 17:23

Cliveden house, where Meghan markle spent the night before her wedding. This was about 10 years ago though.

The food was absolutely incredible, but I was so lacking in confidence I felt so out of place. I kept insisting to the porter that I’d carry my own bag! Blush

AlpineSue · 12/01/2022 17:26

Fours Seasons in Istanbul, many years ago, was fab.
Kasbah Tamadot in Morocco, lovely food and spa
La Reserve in Geneva is also pretty good

Hbh17 · 12/01/2022 17:28

Jade Mountain in St Lucia - thanks to an upgrade
The Imperial in Delhi
Claridges - my favourite hotel ever - it's where I want to die!

ElephantInPrint · 12/01/2022 17:28

Oberoi in Ranthambore.

Inastatus · 12/01/2022 17:31

@Verite1

Conrad Hilton Maldives. Forever spoilt us for other hotels Grin
@Verite1 - we stayed there for our honeymoon! Paradise.
hopeishere · 12/01/2022 17:34

The Merrion - Dublin
Hotel Okura - Amsterdam

Also Walwick Hall mentioned above.

BunsyGirl · 12/01/2022 17:55

Beverly Wilshire (Beverly Hills) - the “Pretty Woman” hotel. Very traditional, reminds me of Claridges. Amazing service.

Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills - more buzzy than the above and the kids loved the rooftop pool.

Coworth Park, Ascot - a Dorchester Group hotel. The most amazing suite with his and her baths.

Atlantis Dubai - a fab family luxury hotel. Would only ever go club level though to avoid the “crowds”.

Fairmont Barbados - doesn't have the same level of amazing facilities as some we have stayed in but really classy, with great staff and service.

Mandarin Oriental Singapore - fab restaurants, fab service, fab location.
