Wherever it was, what's the most posh, luxurious, ostentatious, etc hotel you have ever stayed in? Was it worth the cost?

Raffles Dubai, where we had an enormous room, butler and excellent service. Think it was just over £100 per night in 2017.
Then Sandalwood Villas in Koh Samui for out honeymoon in 2018, we had a villa with a plunge pool and it was excellent. Were picked up from Koh Samui Airport in a 4x4 and given a phone to contact the drivers wherever we were. The reception staff even helped me organise a surprise beach sala meal in Bophut for my husband, we paid about £2k for 11 nights b&b and it was incredible - the service was outstanding.

Yes it is, Babaclover!

I wondered if anyone would mention Burgh Island… a different world! Not traditional luxury but the most amazing experience - the Agatha Christie beach house with hot tub looks fabulous, I’ve requested that for my next visit!
My dad took 30 of us to Burgh island this October for a "why not?" weekend. Dh and I had the mermaid suite. It was amazing, black tie dinner both nights, champagne on arrival, dancing, cocktails. Feels like a bit of a dream now.

Ashford Castle before its big makeover, so it was old fashioned, genuine luxury. Just gorgeous.

FrazzledCareerWoman · 12/01/2022 20:04

Hoshinoya Tokyo I loved it soooooo much!!!

The Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury hotel in Mauritius for our honeymoon.
It was mind blowing and generally gorgeous location and property but the levels of obsequious of the staff was unsettling, some of the other guests obnoxious in their entitlement and the relative poverty of the area surrounding the resort which had armed guards to keep the beach clear of locals something we would actively avoid.

Lilianfels NSW Australia. I will return one day. The time we stayed it was part of the Orient Express group - not sure of status now. Absolutely lovely staff - polite but not subservient.

We had stayed in all sorts of glorious hotels around the world but this is the one that stuck

@FrazzledCareerWoman I would love to go back someday .Sometimes I think i just dreamed it .

I stayed 7 nights in the penthouse suite at www.iniala.com - a hotel consisting of 2 villas, the suite i stayed in and a three Michelin star restaurant. The gave us „staff“ a butler, a nanny, a private chef and a spa therapist. I didn’t ever think I would, but, I got used to it really quickly !

Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong in 2002. I wasn't paying, the client was. My benchmark for posh hotels ever since, it was utterly lovely.
Ooh I lived in the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong for 5 months in 1993! It was nice. Most luxurious for me was either Soneva Fushi in the Maldives (but ‘barefoot luxury’) or a vast suite with dining rooms and all sorts in the Taj Hotel in Mumbai.

Glenapp in Scotland. We had a butler who was confused and dismayed by my not letting him carry my tatty rucksack in every day when we got back from sightseeing. Food was divine.

Carbis bay estate. Absolutely love it even though going by social media we're in the minority! It's our only big treat to ourselves, we live pretty plainly otherwise.

I'm going to Mexico at Easter and determined to make this happen even just a few nights!!

JulesJules · 12/01/2022 20:59

Some of these sound amazing. I've really only ever stayed at one luxurious hotel - the George V, Paris. It was our honeymoon, we had a suite which had two marble bathrooms. It was so lovely. Would love to go back for an anniversary...

The table bay hotel in Cape Town
mhondoro safari lodge which actually won the best safari lodge in the world while we were there

changingstages · 12/01/2022 21:04

Ritz Carlton in Macau. Absolutely ludicrous. Was there for work so wasn't paying. It was fun but not exactly to my taste. Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong was lovely though - luxurious but not stupidly ostentatious.

Ooo I'm local and they're a right bunch! Can I recommend The Tresanton at St Mawes as a non controversial Cornish hotel with a dollop of real class?
Purpleseaside · 12/01/2022 21:44

One & Only Resort - Mauritius, tropical dream.

The Langham - London, the most caring staff.

Belmond Villa St Andrea - Sicily. Old style elegance and the most welcoming staff members. A small hotel which was beautiful. I dream of staying there again.

The Anassa - Cyprus

Very greatful to have been able to stay in these places.

@CrumpledCrumpet

Park Hyatt in Tokyo (the hotel in Lost in Translation). We got an upgrade to a preposterously huge suite that had a walk-in wardrobe bigger than some hotel rooms I’ve stayed in!
I was going to say the Park Hyatt too @CrumpledCrumpet. We absolutely loved it - swimming in the pool, the bar with amazing views, just sitting in the room with the Tokyo skyline. Have been meaning to go back - wanted to go in 2020 and then 2021 but covid has meant we can’t - hopefully 2022!

Other places I’ve loved are the Savoy and the Shangri-La in London, and the Bowery in NYC.

incognitodorrito · 12/01/2022 22:00

I’ve always wanted to stay at The Tresanton, Sir Rocco Forte’s sister owns and I’ve heard it’s beautiful! The Four Seasons on the Bosphorus is very old world stunning. The de Russie with its secret butterfly garden in the middle of Rome is also breathtaking.

Hairbrush123 · 12/01/2022 22:13

Mmm!

St Regis Toronto -
We had a gorgeous one bedroom suite with a fireplace in the living room (perfect for the 22c weather outside Wink). The bath has to be the deepest bath I’ve been in! I didn’t find the butler service to be great imo but everything else was phenomenal.

Fairmont Rio de Janeiro:
Again we had a suite which overlook Copacabana Beach and I really love Brazilian hospitality!

Crowne Plaza Singapore Changi: I actually only paid £3 for a basic room (thanks for points paying the rest which was £150). I can remember arguing with DH trying to convince him to just use the points on Crowne Plaza at the airport as opposed to a hotel downtown as it’s much more convenient for our early morning flight the following day back to London and he was glad I persevered! We got upgraded to a suite which offered direct access from our bedroom to the pool. Wonderful room - just wish the bed was bigger considering the size of the room!

PermanentTemporary · 12/01/2022 22:20

The Gainsborough in Bath- probably not that posh? But it was to me. Loved it and really noticed being treated so well by the staff.
