Bath University Accommodation

Hello, I’m not sure if it’s already being discussed somewhere, sorry if it is. DC has been accepted to Bath Uni (as a first choice) and we’re waiting for an accommodation email. Anyone has already received theirs? It’s our first experience with university application/life. Not sure how long the wait is and we’re getting a bit nervous. Should DC contact them? Or just wait patiently? Thanks for help.

Haven't heard anything re accommodation yet either (also first choice uni), the Bath seem pretty good at sending information through tho so DC is just waiting. There is quite a bit of info that's been put on the Bath website for freshers, it looks like there is lots of great stuff planned for them and plenty of opportunities to meet new people ☺️

Thank you!!

Pretty sure DS had an email saying they would be contacting students with details of accommodation in two tranches, one on 24th Aug and again on 31st Aug.

hanka · 22/08/2023 18:27

Brilliant! Thanks flotsom!

Wait. DD went last year and didn't hear until right at the end of August. They won't tell you if you contact them early, they also came out in batches so some heard before others. Worked fine in the end DD got her second choice and has loved her first year - good luck to yours.

hanka · 22/08/2023 21:03

Thanks honeyandfizz, we’re sitting and waiting…. Glad to hear your DD loved her first year.

Unlike some other unis Bath wait until they know (almost) all their students and then allocate rooms equitably rather than trying to use accomodation as a hook to students to make rushed decisions in which uni to choose.

hanka · 22/08/2023 21:55

That’s interesting. I never thought of it that way. Thank you, jgw1.

2 years ago we didn't hear until 2 weeks before term started! Was a bit worrying at the time and was allocated city centre accommodation rather than on campus as hoped for. All worked out great though.

hanka · 23/08/2023 08:30

That sounds unsettling, such a long wait, Lemoncurd. Glad it all worked out.

Mine heard last year only on the 10th September.
They release in dribs and drabs after results are all in. They'll start sending emails out saying "don't worry, we haven't forgotten you, everyone will find out before day X". I think my daughter's came through just a couple of days before the cut off date.

So1invictus · 23/08/2023 13:34

(they also then create a Teams group for each of the accommodations so before they go, they can find their housemates)

OscarMikeGolf · 23/08/2023 15:03

What accommodation has everyone’s young person applied for? My DS had Bath as his insurance choice so only applied for accommodation yesterday (when they opened it again for insurance holders and clearing students). It’s a shame but all that was left were a few in the city and Osborne House (which I believe is for mature students/students with medical needs only?).
I assumed all the firm holders already knew what their accommodation was? So does that mean we’ll find out even later than you? I don’t think my nerves can take it.

Do Bath uni create the Teams chat @So1invictus or the students themselves? I’m frightened my DS will end up in a city flat with only postgrads as that’s all that was left.

hanka · 23/08/2023 15:08

Ours was a first choice uni and he forgot already what he put down as his preferred accommodation option 🙄 there were quite a few so we’re waiting…. I reckon DC will be happy with anything.

Ha ha typical, well at least he should get something he likes and on campus at least. I hope you find out soon.

I just wish they had more halls on campus so there's enough room for everyone. Having to travel in from the town everyday won't have quite the same vibe and I imagine is quite nerve wracking in the first few weeks when they're finding everything and getting their bearings.

So1invictus · 23/08/2023 19:12

@OscarMikeGolf DD tells me the accommodation office created the Teams for each residence, so one Teams for Quads, one for Eastwood etc, then as chats sprang up, everyone found people in their actual numbered block. By the time DD went, there was only one person in her flat she didn't already "know".

I don't think they'll put your son with postgrads, but he might end up in the city. I stay in the Hampton when I visit DD and it's right opposite one of the city residences and looks quite nice. The U1 bus passes about every 10 minutes almost 24 h a day (I think it stops just for 4 hours or so in the dead of night) so they aren't so isolated, but there's no getting away from the fact they aren't on campus. DD has a friend on her course who was in the city and wasn't that keen simply for that reason. She only met one person who didn't get any uni accommodation at all. I know at some other universities (Bristol is one I think) accommodation is a nightmare.

Wherever they end up, they will have a brilliant time. Bath is fabulous and DD can't wait to go back! The accommodation people and welfare in general, are excellent.

So1invictus · 23/08/2023 19:17

Right, I just asked her. She says she knows 3 girls who were placed in Poulteny Court with postgrads. But they were placed together so it wasn't too bad, though not ideal. Again, not the accommodation, just the off campus bit.

useitorlose · 23/08/2023 19:35

They only live in for a year, they will soon make friends and find shared houses for next year, none of which will be on campus. DD was on Stanley Road West for her last two years and almost every house was full of students.

OscarMikeGolf · 23/08/2023 20:29

Thanks So1invictus, yes it won’t be so bad if he is with other first years 🤞Good to know about the buses too.

I really relaxed when I saw how good the bus service is. Obviously in the first few weeks things are a bit chaotic but it settles down. They even get it back up to campus after clubbing and when my daughter came home for Christmas and was on a National Express coach to the airport at 5.45 she managed to get the bus down the hill to the coach station.

fortyfifty · 24/08/2023 15:47

The buses are great. They run until really late and just have students on them mostly. It feels super safe going to and from campus and the city.

My DD was on campus in first year but I'd say she went out in the city more often than socialised on campus.

LozengeShaped · 24/08/2023 16:52

I'm sure they wouldn't put one fresher in with a load of postgrads! Even 40 years ago, when I was put in postgrad accommodation in the town, there was a handful of us, and it was all great. There're positives and negatives of being in town and on campus.

DeliciousViolets · 24/08/2023 17:35

Son just got an email now with accommodation offer.

hanka · 24/08/2023 18:08
