University Offers for 2022 Start

I've heard universities are being more cautious this year, with some stating that they are not going to make most offers until the January deadline, when they can see a clearer picture - because of the over-subscription that happened for last year's students.

I thought it might be interesting to see which universities are making offers for which subjects.

We've only heard from York so far, for Computer Science. York University do seem to be making early offers.

Anyone else heard from any universities? Think it would be good to know what is happening out there :)

@Fruitygal DS is pretty taken by Birmingham, although this may be because it is the only face to face open day he's been to. But the History department was pretty impressive and it is a nice campus.

Hoping to get to see York on an offer holder day, but he's currently locked himself out of the portal and is waiting for the IT dept to fix...

@JemimaMuddledUp bestie went to Birmingham to read history and loved it

Accommodation rules are different at each uni. 4-5 years ago many would guarantee accommodation for firm and insurance choices and portals didn’t open until April/ May. With unis randomly selecting rooms based on a ranked list on results day you’d find out. Now we have places like York opening portals in end of jan on a first come first served basis. DD feels pressured and stressed. Tips - If you can’t look round the unis accommodation then watch the videos on their sites or you tube videos that students have made. It helps a lot. Look at the cost overall not per week - example Durham does 39 week leasing, York 44 weeks and Sheffield 42 weeks so despite seeming similar per week rates some can work out more. My other DCs were in self catered halls one in private halls (uni ran out of accommodation) and the other a uni one which was townhouse style with lounge with TVs and kitchen area with table and shared bathroom between two.

Off to Sheffield offer day tomorrow !!

Is anybody waiting for Modern Languages from Edinburgh? It's the only one DS hasn't heard from now.

Lennybenny · 18/02/2022 18:56
@Lennybenny what subject?
Ancient history and archaeology Smile

@Siriusmuggle

These offers all sound so high. They’d be unobtainable for my child. His baselines are 3Bs but his predictions are lower at the moment. I’m thankful that conservatoires require lower grades!
My ds too. I think its starting to bother him though he's not saying that. His school isn't helping and apparently pretty much the entire years mocks were rubbish so that's not helping either.

I'm not even sure uni is the right place for him but I'm following his lead.

Fruitygal · 18/02/2022 21:49

Many kids including my 2 DSs were not A candidates - both got 2:1s both went to second choice of unis (insurance) - 1 has excelled at MSc and having finished has 3 interviews next week and the other works in his chosen field with a fab job. Don't sweat the A level grades. MN and TSR are very much in an higher end land not reality

Juja · 19/02/2022 08:29

@petitebleu same here - DD still waiting for Edinburgh and also no news from Newcastle for Modern Languages.

UniQuery · 21/02/2022 23:43

Has anyone DC had an offer from Kings for psychology?

ealingwestmum · 22/02/2022 07:41

For those waiting on Durham, DD received non contextual offer for Modern Languages last night. triple A. Slowly, slowly…

Fruitygal · 22/02/2022 07:44

@ealingwestmumCongratulations to your DD!!

ealingwestmum · 22/02/2022 08:25

Thanks so much Fruitygal

Thanks ET. It’s Durham’s standard offer for languages.

Will it be her reserve? That’s a very good question. I think it will be her firm for UK. But, we are progressing (slowly, study visa challenges etc) with her Canadian offer, whilst waiting for the outcome from US early April (unlikely, she’s only applied to one college and it’s subject to fin. aid even if successful). But, the one we really all want is TCD. Offers, if successful come out post A levels. But in parallel, flights are booked to Montreal on 20 Aug.

To say I am having a nightmare is an understatement, and really posting for those that have contemplated whether they should have also applied overseas. The reality is that with Ireland now being one of the few English speaking countries to study in post Brexit without incurring International fees for EU students, no one knows the volume of applicants this year. And Ireland have announced they will mark their home students generously this summer. In any other year we wouldn’t be hedging for a place, but her preferred course has only 12 places.

I have refrained from posting as I am aware it feels a little crass to winge, especially when she’s got very good offers here. But she’s just not into them, and so we may be playing Russian roulette to the end…

Sorry to hear so many of you are still waiting. It’s really shit for your DC.

Isithalftermyet · 23/02/2022 11:50

Anyone had Psychology offers from Bath or Exeter? We heard back from the other three really quickly. I know it can be quite a wait but wondering if we need to prepare for a rejection?

UniQuery · 23/02/2022 22:56

@Isithalftermyet - Exeter say on their website that usually give out decisions generally towards end of March so think not hearing is ok still.

Cherryonthetop2019 · 24/02/2022 00:43

DD has been offered an unconditional at her top choice. So relieved and happy! I work there so she gets a 50% discount on tuition fees too. Feels like we have won a huge prize!

Isithalftermyet · 24/02/2022 07:02

Thanks @UniQuery - I hadn't seen that. We'll keep our finger crossed still then!

Juja · 24/02/2022 10:36

@Cherryonthetop2019 many congratulations to your DD

Harveypuss · 04/03/2022 12:27

Just an an update. My son was waiting for Exeter as the final decision of his 5 uni choices. Finally got a decision yesterday and it was an offer to study History single honours at Penryn instead of joint honours History and German at St David's! Rang them and basically they said his predicted grades weren't high enough for St David's so they can only offer him the other campus doing a single honours, which he doesn't want to do! I guess Penryn is under subscribed.

Disappointing to have to wait so find that out, but he's declined that offer and firmed Nottingham as his first choice! He really likes Nottingham so is happy, but he just wanted to see what Exeter came back with. Had they come back with an equal offer for St David's campus he would've had a dilemma, but at least it's all now sorted.

Isithalftermyet · 04/03/2022 12:43

Sorry to hear that @Harveypuss but great news that he has firmed up Nottingham.

Still keeping our fingers crossed here and waiting...

Alsoplayspiccolo · 04/03/2022 20:42

Has anyone heard from KCL? DD has applied for English with film but hasn’t had a decision yet; it’s her last uni so she’s getting fed up with waiting.
