University Offers for 2022 Start

I've heard universities are being more cautious this year, with some stating that they are not going to make most offers until the January deadline, when they can see a clearer picture - because of the over-subscription that happened for last year's students.

I thought it might be interesting to see which universities are making offers for which subjects.

We've only heard from York so far, for Computer Science. York University do seem to be making early offers.

Anyone else heard from any universities? Think it would be good to know what is happening out there :)

We've had three lower (contextual because of postcode) and one inexplicably higher. Still waiting on 5th

Tomnooktoldmeto · 09/02/2022 16:40

DD’s offers so far have been as course literature, DS on the other hand has had an unconditional and an offer of £1k from one if he firms and also 3 lower than the university literature so 2 x BBC instead of AAB and 1 of BBB instead of AAB

And their favourite university would put them on the same campus in the same building

OrangeBlossom28 · 09/02/2022 18:29

DD has had all five offers as stated on the uni websites (Business Management).

JemimaMuddledUp · 09/02/2022 19:22

Rejection from Durham unfortunately.

The offers DS has had are all equal to the typical offer for the course, although Lancaster has given a lower offer (ABB instead of AAB) if he makes them his firm.

Fruitygal · 09/02/2022 20:18

@JemimaMuddledUp sorry to hear about the rejection - what subject was it for?

Biological sciences applied for here DD has 4 offers and is waiting on Durham either way - all 4 are as per course outline with 2 offering reduction of one grade for EPQ and the other 2 offering reduction in one grade for firming (which she won't do) . Currently York and Sheffield are beating Exeter and Lancaster for her .

NCTDN · 09/02/2022 20:23

DD is prepared for a rejection from Durham...

beenrumbled · 09/02/2022 20:30

@JemimaMuddledUp that's a shame about 5he rejection. Sad

Lancaster Sheffield and York have told DD The same. AAB or if she firms them ABB. Her favourite is Lancaster, but she won't firm until she gas been on all the offer days.

JemimaMuddledUp · 09/02/2022 21:11

DS has applied to study History. He always knew Durham was a stretch, but if you don't try you don't find out!

He has a higher offer for York (AAA) than Lancaster (AAB or ABB if firm). Also has an offer from Birmingham (AAB) and is waiting for Cardiff.

Fruitygal · 09/02/2022 22:20

@JemimaMuddledUp my son did similar on his ucas there was a uni where he was borderline grades but applied anyway … also declined from that uni but loved where eventually went. Where dies he want to go ?

Harveypuss · 10/02/2022 21:59

My son has 4/5 decisions/offers. He is still waiting for Exeter's decision. So frustrating as he applied in early in November. Got 4 offers back really quickly and thought he could get it all organised and done with.

We've got Nottingham's offer holder day on Saturday. If he still likes what he sees, he will likely withdraw the Exeter application and firm Nottingham, given their accommodation portal opens at beginning of March and it's first come, first served. Can't afford to wait for Exeter's decision for that much longer.

Somebody told me that Exeter quite often give a few early offers to the top graders and wait for the middle/lower grade applicants to withdraw themselves, thus leaving them to decide on the rest of the applicants, who are probably those who absolutely want Exeter no matter what. No idea if this is true or not, but I'm not sure why some Unis can make a decision quickly but not Exeter. He just wants a decision, even if it's a rejection. Frustrating.

Chewbecca · 10/02/2022 22:15

Uni of Nottingham website says 4 April accommodation opens - have I missed something else?

We went to Nottingham OHD yesterday - really liked it. Also hoping for DS’s 5th offer or rejection (St Andrews) to come in before the accommodation date.

Harveypuss · 10/02/2022 22:52

@Chewbecca. I had an email from the accommodation team in Nottingham saying their accommodation application opens on 1st March. I'm going to email them back and double check that.

MarchingFrogs · 10/02/2022 23:12

Not the parent of a Nottingham applicant, just terminally curious...

The Home page for accommodation says:

Applications for first year Undergraduate and Postgraduate students starting September 2022/23 will open on 4 April 2022..

However, if you delve further and get to this page - www.nottingham.ac.uk/accommodation/current-students/next-year/stay-in-halls.aspx - you find:

Prospective first year students should visit their how to apply section and can submit their online application from Tuesday 1 March 2022 onwards.

Applications submitted in error through the returners application portal will be cancelled and you will be asked to resubmit.

So possibly the original date was March 1st and it has been changed?

Chewbecca · 11/02/2022 07:49

Hmm, interesting. Will be good to hear what they say Harvey, perhaps they are both right but have different meanings somehow!
At the OHD there is a desk with accomodation folk to drop by and speak to so they should know too. Enjoy your day out!

Linneasweet · 11/02/2022 08:03

@harveypuss, we're in exactly the same position as you but with Bath, So annoying! Applied in October, got 4 offers (top 3 on her list and insurance choice) within a week or so and now just waiting for Bath. She wanted to continue to wait until she get an answer as she will feel better in her self if she get 5 yeses but she now given it to the end of next week and will then withdraw Bath as her 1st choice York got early accommodation selection as well.

TequilaShot · 11/02/2022 08:03

As a prospective Nottingham parent here I would be interested to know too. From someone who went on an offer holder day recently they were told the 4th April also.

Wordlewobble · 11/02/2022 09:52

We have York as a possible insurance choice but DS still waiting to hear from St Andrews who are notoriously late to offer. I am hoping he will firm Durham and put York as his insurance soon rather than waiting for St Andrews.

Harveypuss · 11/02/2022 13:51

@Chewbecca and @TequilaShot. I rang Exeter's Admissions department and they were very vague and couldn't give me (I am down on their form as having authority to talk to them on his behalf) any indication of when they will make a decision on his application. Disappointing.

Meanwhile, I had an email back from Nottingham's Accommodation department and they confirmed - "Yes there has been a change of the original planned date so applications will open on the 4th April now for first year Under-Grads".

That's good news and at least we can now afford to wait a bit longer for Exeter to make their decision. Meanwhile, we are looking forward to Nottingham's Offer Holder day tomorrow!

Good to be able to share the load with you all. It's an anxious time for our young people, isn't it?!

That's such good news re Nottingham as DD torn between Notts & Bath but the accommodation thing was adding to the urgency as Bath not given a date for offer holders day. We went to the offer holders day at Notts on Wednesday DD loved it but found the city a bit scruffy (sorry Nottingham people!)

Off to Liverpool next weekend too.

Valleyofthedollymix · 11/02/2022 14:26

Is it definitely first come first serve on accommodation? I checked with St Andrews and it makes no difference if you've got a conditional offer until it becomes conditional ie mid August when you get (or don't get) the grades. Is that not true of other universities?

TequilaShot · 11/02/2022 14:36

@Harveypuss Thank you so much for getting back and confirming. What a relief! Yes, the city centre is more run down than it used to be, that's for sure. Such a shame when the campus is so beautiful.

Harveypuss · 11/02/2022 14:39

@Valleyofthedollymix - it depends on the university I guess. Nottingham's accommodation is definitely first come, first served and can only apply once firmed choice. When my son asked the question, they responded. "Yes we work on a first come first serve basis, it all depends on what you choose to how fast it is available for".

They state they guarantee accommodation to all firmed undergrads, but you might end up with something you don't want, if you apply too late.

Yes I've not been for 20 years and was noticeably worse but then most likely the same as most Cities these days. Really forward to seeing Liverpool.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 11/02/2022 15:04

Interesting re accommodation as Liverpool have already opened their bookings on a first come first serve basis without having to firm so DD has added her top 3 choices just in case she loves it.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 11/02/2022 15:08

For those of you considering accommodation in Nottingham I would advise you to get in early

In the past they’ve placed students in accommodation over in Derby which is a fair trek down the A52 good 40 mins on the bus

However Derby are having accommodation problems so may have less surplus which could mean less than ideal accommodation for late comers

Derby is looking to demolish and rebuild one of its own halls and had to evacuate and abandon use of another fairly new block just before Christmas when it came to light that it was clad in polystyrene brick render and had failed a fire safety assessment. No return to this building till at least September if then
