University Offers for 2022 Start

I've heard universities are being more cautious this year, with some stating that they are not going to make most offers until the January deadline, when they can see a clearer picture - because of the over-subscription that happened for last year's students.

I thought it might be interesting to see which universities are making offers for which subjects.

We've only heard from York so far, for Computer Science. York University do seem to be making early offers.

Anyone else heard from any universities? Think it would be good to know what is happening out there :)

Also wondering about KCL for psychology.

Their admissions portal is extremely frustrating

@Lennybenny

Anyone heard from Southampton and Warwick? We've got the other 3 back.
DS got an offer from Warwick last night. I am super excited as I had no input into his choices. He picked some very random ones too which have offered unconditionally.
Citygirl2019 · 10/03/2022 04:56

@Harveypuss check when your DS needs to book accommodation at Nottingham. When my DS was in the 1st year it was very early compared to other universities.

Any pointers welcome… DN applying for mech engineering has only heard from one uni - a rejection. He’s deferred so already had his grades: A*AA. Getting a bit discouraged. Waiting on Edin, UCL, Manchester, Bath. I read up thread that UCL are generally slow so that’s reassuring.

Ulelia · 10/03/2022 11:11

None of the students in my 130-strong Sixth from have heard from Edinburgh or UCL yet. Bath started coming through this week, but only some courses. we've had some answers from Manchester, but nothing from engineering. Give it time!

SparklingLime · 10/03/2022 11:16

Thank you so much, @Ulelia. That’s really reassuring, I’ll pass it on.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 10/03/2022 12:28

Please can I join? I’m at work so can’t read the whole thread now but will later.
DS is at grammar school, predicted A*AA, has received offers from Manchester, Birmingham and Swansea. Still waiting to hear from Leeds (anyone else??). Bristol rejected saying his predictions were great but others had written or had written for them better supporting statements. He’s a bit gutted. Last year quite a few people we know from the non-grammar schools here got contextual offers from Bristol, which feels unfair - by no stretch is this a deprived area Confused
He wants to study economics. Should add that he’s really happy to have Manchester and Birmingham…. Just want to hear either way from Leeds.

Fruitygal · 11/03/2022 20:25

@AvonCallingBarksdale welcome! Rejections are hard - we’ve got friends who’s kids are predicted AAA with multiple rejections this year …. Scary

Decorhate · 12/03/2022 12:16

@AvonCallingBarksdale Bristol is not the only uni using personal statements as an excuse to reject this year. Manchester are also giving that excuse when applicants have asked for feedback. I think it’s just a case of not as many places available as usual this year, due to deferrals from previous years. Plus unis are bring more cautious about how many offers they make.

Fingers crossed your Ds hears from Leeds soon.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 12/03/2022 12:51

Thanks both Smile. I’d not factored in the deferrals from last year as well, good point.

thing47 · 12/03/2022 14:01

There's nothing unfair about contextual offers, they aim to put exam results in, you know, context.

Grammar schools (and my DS attended one) offer advantages to their pupils over and above those who attend comprehensives or secondary moderns so it's absolutely right that exam results take this into account.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 12/03/2022 14:24

thing 47 respectfully I would disagree. In some cases they work really well. However, in an area such as the county where we live, which is either Grammar or Upper, there can be a blanket assumption that the Upper schools should benefit from CO by virtue of not being one of the Grammars. My lived experience is that this is what happened last year.
There’s no need to explain what a CO is, I understand perfectly well Confused
At the end of the day, I’m a parent who, naturally, wants the best for my own DC, as do we all. In the area where I live CO don’t necessarily reflect the environment, that’s all.

zippyswife · 12/03/2022 15:31

This may be a stupid question but wondered if anyone can advise.

I’m a mature student, have just been offered a PGDip on a counselling course. At the same time I have also just been offered another job and an interview for another interesting position. I have 5 days to accept the offer. Can I accept and then decide against it at a later stage or am Legally bound to enrol and pay fees once I have accepted the offer. I didn’t expect at all to get offered a place so my head is all over the place and unsure which path to take!

thing47 · 12/03/2022 16:33

Contextual offers aren't made only on the basis of whether an area is deprived or not, they can also be on the basis of individual school/college performance – which is most likely what happens in an area with a plethora of grammar schools, the non-grammar school students get COs because they have fewer opportunities, resources and so on. Anyone who thinks Grammar Schools and Secondary Moderns operate on a level playing field doesn't have a scooby, frankly.

Of course we all want what is best for our own DCs, but that doesn't preclude the possibility of acknowledging some schools/colleges have advantages over others. If you don't agree with COs, that is fine, it's a valid opinion. It is not, however, 'unfair'.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 12/03/2022 18:21

Ok thing 47 thanks for the explanation Grin I’ve only just come on to this long-running thread and have no wish to derail. Obviously I can see the merits of CO, but, as a parent I can be a little miffed for my own DS that he hasn’t been offered a place at somewhere that he might have liked to go to, yes? That doesn’t mean I can’t grasp how contextual offers work. The two aren’t mutually exclusive Grin
Anyway, as I said, no wish to move the thread off piste.

Fruitygal · 12/03/2022 20:36

CO can be a joke - my DD at a grammar 1/3 of her friends are getting contextual offers she gets standard. They have all had the advantage of grammar school education. Some have 4-5 bed properties in roads near school on the edge of town centre so classed as a deprived postcode. Hence the contextual. It’s not a perfect system. Social mobility is important and going to a sink school with grades a step down from A* to A despite teaching yourself deserves the contextual offer to allow progression. Life is unfair in many ways - I was meant to go to Loughborough glad I didn’t - wasn’t at the time but was within 6months

Tornado70 · 12/03/2022 22:29

Still waiting for a decision from Arts University Bournemouth. At interview they said 2-4 weeks. It’s been 3.5, so hopefully not much longer.
One of DD classmates for an offer the day after interview. Wondering if lots of others have had offers already .

Alsoplayspiccolo · 12/03/2022 22:59

STILL waiting for KCL! Angry
Honestly, it’s beyond boring now. DD applied in December, with predictions a grade below required grades, so is fully expecting a rejection but just wants to know now so that she can decide on her other offers.

Ulelia · 14/03/2022 11:08

@zippyswife you're not legally bound to anything. Accept the course, and make your decision later. Just check when your deadline is for paying your first installment of fees so you know when you have to make a decision by.
zippyswife · 14/03/2022 11:11

Thanks @Ulelia

Harveypuss · 14/03/2022 12:14

My son firmed Nottingham and reserved Reading. He's has received confirmation from Nottingham about it but no communication from Reading. Do the reserve choices usually communicate with UCAS applicants? Is it standard to receive nothing?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 17/03/2022 12:51

Rejection came through from Leeds yesterday. No explanation 🤷‍♀️. DS predicted grades meet the requirements so assume too many applicants/deferred places. He’s disappointed but in a way now the waiting is over he can just firm up his two choices.

Decorhate · 17/03/2022 19:40

@AvonCallingBarksdale Sorry to hear about Leeds. But he has some good offers. Which do you think he will firm & insure?

AvonCallingBarksdale · 17/03/2022 20:46

Thanks @Decorhate Smile I’m not sure. I think it’ll be Birmingham - he’s got an offer day there soon so that should help make his mind up one way or another. Feels like a long old slog till September!!

Chocalata · 23/03/2022 12:43

@AvonCallingBarksdale
I think there are all sorts of 'unfair's in education. Maybe your child got in to grammar without tutoring, but many don't. For some, this tutoring is not financially possible, and they are then up against tutored children.
CO's aren't perfect, but they are improving, and they are here to stay.
Why didn't your child go to the local secondary/comp?
