University Offers for 2022 Start

I've heard universities are being more cautious this year, with some stating that they are not going to make most offers until the January deadline, when they can see a clearer picture - because of the over-subscription that happened for last year's students.

I thought it might be interesting to see which universities are making offers for which subjects.

We've only heard from York so far, for Computer Science. York University do seem to be making early offers.

Anyone else heard from any universities? Think it would be good to know what is happening out there :)

@Chocalata, there aren’t any comprehensive schools where we live.

hi there Warwick sent offer to my DC a couple of months ago - English

Niceday203 · 23/03/2022 16:44

Waiting for UCL ( English) since October and not a peep out of them. Has anyone heard anything ? TSR mentions a lot of activity for Psych and Econ but not sure if the English offers are all out now and we are just waiting for rejection here? This is the most awful experience. I can't help but think there must be a better way!

@AvonCallingBarksdale
So presumably you thought that going to a grammar rather than a SM would be beneficial to your DC. Did you tutor?
Some kids don’t have these choices - they are bright and deserve a chance to catch up on those who had a head start. CO’s, however imperfect they are, have this aim at their heart and I applaud that. Presumably you could have done it a different way and tried for a CO if you are cross about your friends?

@Chocalata this is now coming across as a rather odd level of interest in my family so I’m opt out of answering your questions if it’s all the same to you.

Chocalata · 23/03/2022 17:16

@AvonCallingBarksdale no worries. Was just confused by why, having managed to get your DC a great education, you were bemoaning contextual offers.

DS got a UCL offer a couple of weeks ago but that was for Maths.

I also live in an area without comprehensive schools. It's a wealthy area in general, in a rural part of the country where there is not very much economic or social deprivation.

However, the local grammar school and the local secondary modern (equidistant from our house, similar sizes) are worlds apart in terms of funding, resources, support and advice for the pupils and pretty well every other metric you care to mention. To give just one random example, the chemistry teacher at the secondary modern was excellent, but there was no one else capable of taking A level chemistry so if they were indisposed or required elsewhere the pupils basically had to teach themselves that lesson.

That specific school was (is?) on the list of schools to which contextual offers were applied because it was clear to universities that its pupils were at a disadvantage compared to their peers at the grammar school. Having had DCs go through the 2 schools at the same time, I can say quite unequivocally that any attempt to level the playing field – however clunky and imperfect – most definitely is 'fair'.

DD received her final offer yesterday, the one she’s been waiting months on, an unconditional to study architecture at Edinburgh Uni.

We live in Edinburgh, only 20 mins bus ride from the uni so she’s happy to stay at home and save us (and herself) a fortune Smile.

Fruitygal · 24/03/2022 20:56

@DonegalGhirl congratulations for your DD's offer - does she not want to spread her wings to another scottish uni or is she a home girl ?

DonegalGhirl · 26/03/2022 12:53

@Fruitygal, she’s no desire to leave Edinburgh and enjoys her home comforts. She knows she could move into uni accommodation so she gets the full ‘experience’ but the thought of having to do her own washing, cleaning, cooking etc plus the cost is putting her off.

She’s quite a sociable person so we sure she’ll make new friends from her course and whatever social clubs she joins. And as we’re pretty close to the university she can still enjoy nights out.

Still waiting to hear from Bath and Exeter for Psych - it just seems like such a long wait. Anyone else had offers on Psych from either?
