@bendmeoverbackwards, my dd applied to Bristol too but it's not far enough away from us!! She was born in London so she's determined to get back there Grin
@Eastisup they’re doing a swap! I’m a UCL graduate and had a great time there. I lived in Ramsay Hall (still there on Maple St).

chopc · 11/08/2021 18:51

@Pumpkintopf -I don't understand wrt Cambridge. There were places available at adjustments but none were offered to DS or?

He will have the best time at Imperial. Very different to Cambridge in lifestyle but equal or superior in intellect and brain power (of fellow students)

Great to see so many return to this thread - please do stay!

@Xenia - I always find your contribution interesting and helpful so I hope you continue with us.

@Peaseblossum22 - haha I spotted the new "u"....

@Pumpkintopf - so pleased you had a good day and sorry to hear the Cambridge email dampened the spirits somewhat. Despite DD being rejected by Oxford, I still feel Oxford is the kinder twin. I find Cambridge's policy of over offering and keeping hopefuls hanging on to the very last minute most unpleasant. Unfortunately, our family speak from miserable experience....

raspberryrippleicecream · 11/08/2021 18:58

DS is MSci (Mathematics) but prefers not to have locations given, but can we go on the list anyway?

My older two got the account with the Railcard. But DS1 got it in second year, his first year he was with HSBC and got Amazon Prime and Amazon vouchers. You aren't tied in for four years, so you can review options!

jano69 · 11/08/2021 19:00

Shouting out a big thank you to @chopc for keeping that list updated,

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 19:05

Thanks @jano69 I haven't experienced Oxford but Cambridge has been painful, that's for sure. Ah well, it's done with now finally.

Thanks @chopc I really think he will have the best time at Imperial.

So - my understanding is that there were places available for NatSci on adjustment otherwise we wouldn't have been able to apply for adjustment (some course applicants, like medics, couldn't apply as no spaces available at all).

We don't know how many spaces there were - could have been two across the whole University as it's considered on a pooled basis rather than each College looking at 'their' applicants- and not only were adjustment eligible students considered for these spaces, also the 'summer pool' students ie those who had a Cambridge offer but missed their grades.

Maybe if we'd known there were, for instance, only two spaces available we wouldn't have applied - then again you'd wonder 'what if' I guess. Either way, he wasn't offered one of the however many places so that's it.

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 19:05

Big thank you for the updated list chopc Thanks

derekthe1adyhamster · 11/08/2021 19:14

So pleased to hear that everyone seems to have got their first choice (after the universities that are not too be named) DS was considering adjustment but decided against it as he's totally fallen for Birmingham! And a friend who is high up in computer science at AMEX told him that she recruited more from Birmingham than Exeter which was his other choice.
So off to Birmingham for computer science 😁

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/08/2021 19:23

@Pumpkintopf I don't understand Cambridge's reasoning either but maybe it's for the best seeing as you had such a good day today and your ds is excited. After all the uncertainty of this year, it's nice to have something concrete in place. He'll have a great time being a student in London and Imperial is fantastic.

Hope you get home soon, you must be exhausted!

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/08/2021 19:25

Well done to your ds @derekthe1adyhamster Birmingham is great. My oldest dd had an offer there to to English a few years ago, I remember going to the Open Day with her and sitting on deckchairs in the grassy bit in the middle of the campus, really beautiful. She decided against the course in the end in favour of a Performing Arts course in London. It's much more 'her' and I'm pleased it worked out well but I was a little bit sad about Birmingham!

Thanks for that @Pumpkintopf . I see what you mean. I think you did absolutely the right thing in applying

Durham peeps - Hopefully we will be dropping off DC on the weekend of 25th/26th Sept. For us it will deffo involve an overnight stay. So shall we arrange to meet for coffee or a meal at some point?

OP posts:
Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 19:40

@derekthe1adyhamster very wise!! Kind of wish we'd done the same in a way but I think the 'what ifs' would have got to both me and ds - DH was dead against and was proved right, again!

@chopc feel that I want to come to Durham too now, just to meet you all Grin

chopc · 11/08/2021 19:42

I will deffo meet you when you come down to London again and have time @Pumpkintopf

Majaso12 · 11/08/2021 19:52

It’s biochemistry dd is going to be studying at imperial.

Not sure when the move in date will be or when she’ll find out her accommodation. She had to choose 5, so 2 of her choices were twin rooms as she wanted to stay close to campus, but hope she gets a single room as the twin is £44 more a week. Starting to get nervous about her moving to London now.

Longtimenewsee · 11/08/2021 20:00

Yes it IS chemistry chopc .
Aww it would be smashing to do a Durham meet Smile

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 20:03

@Majaso12 ds is keen to be close to the central campus too so chose Beit, Eastside and Southside- guessing your Dd maybe did the same? Really hope he gets one of his five choices...

Hope I can join too. Don't get a chance to get on MN much these days. DD is/was another oxbridge redirection. Although it feels like such a long time now. DD is going to UCL as well - so another London bound student.

loofah2 · 11/08/2021 20:17

I should say I was on an earlier thread but cannot for the life of me remember what my username was

Majaso12 · 11/08/2021 20:22

@Pumpkintopf Yes dd chose single and twin at Southside and Eastside and single at Beit. She doesn’t want to have to travel in every day and doesn’t know London, so is hoping she doesn’t get North Acton.

Do you know when they find out? Think they said in a couple of weeks.

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 20:33

Yes @Majaso12 same here - seems a bit of a slog in from Acton and let's face it, when else will they get the chance to live in South Kensington?! Grin

WRT dates, all it says on their website is -

Information for 2021-22
If you have applied for accommodation and have an unconditional academic offer from the College, you will receive your accommodation offer in early September. No accommodation offers will be sent before this.
Due to an anticipated increased demand on our accommodation portfolio for 2021-22, you may receive an offer for a hall not previously advertised.

SeasonFinale · 11/08/2021 21:08

Those offered Cambridge adjustment would have been already ranked on their original application. Then when invited to apply they would offer to those that apply that had the highest rankings. Obviously some don't apply because they have either moved on or changed their mind but they don't know which will or won't apply so anyone who was sent the we may consider you if adjustment places are available are asked to reapply.

rosyposybluebell · 11/08/2021 21:27

Hi, another long time lurker here. Hope it's ok if I join in. DD also a Cambridge redirection but is now going to Edinburgh to do archaeology. Accommodation eventually applied for so currently waiting to see what she will be allocated. Move in date is apparently weekend of 11/12 Sept so not long to get organised........!
