@chopc delighted the accommodation is finally through and as desired
@Tenpastseven great he is having a good gap year
@Oldowl hosting refugees is such a good thing to do.
Hope all the move ins go well and there are not too many tears.

DD missed her clubs and societies freshers fair because she was in quarantine but has emailed some of them about joining up.
I hope she does because it would be good if she had some non party related activities!

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/09/2021 13:49

Dd is in! Room is fine, bit tired looking but for uni accommodation it’s nice. Very hot though, sun was streaming through the (two) windows, she might need a fan. We helped unpack a bit, then Dh and I have gone into Clifton for a quick bite. It’s full of uni students + parents! We’ll head back to say goodbye to dd, don’t know how that will go, she’s been a bit wobbly ☹️

Stillcrikey · 18/09/2021 15:34

We have said farewell in Bristol. DS’s room is a bit tired but perfectly nice.
He’s in a flat of five and has just messaged to say three of the other four have now moved in.
We are staying over again tonight but I’m sitting on my hands avoiding messaging him. I just hope he gets out and about tonight. He’s not booked any fresher stuff in advance, so hope he manages to find what’s available / going in.
His halls are quite small so hoping they advertise stuff.
Arghh
I’ll be ok soon.

jano69 · 18/09/2021 15:40

Well done bend and Stillcrikey! They won't notice the tiredness of the rooms in a couple of weeks time. Hope @SeasonFinale is doing okay with the Bristol drop off too. x

BigWoollyJumpers · 18/09/2021 16:28

DD went to the Exeter freshers fair today and decided on her clubs/societies. She has one sport, one drama, one subject, and an additional surprise, one social. She is checking out Italian Society tonight, chat, pasta and Aperol. Obviously niche, but hey, food, wine and conversation would always be on my list Grin.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/09/2021 18:09

@Stillcrikey which halls is your ds in?

AvocadoPlant · 18/09/2021 18:14

Hope the Bristol drop offs have gone well and students setting in to their new term time homes.

Pumpkintopf · 18/09/2021 18:25

"Another path.... the journey begins' is perfect @chopc 👏🏻

Bristol lot - glad you're all dropped off and hope the DC are settling in ok. Hugs to you all.

Longtimenewsee · 18/09/2021 18:34

Oh good luck to the Bristol lot. Hope they all settle in well and any wobbles are short lived.

Stillcrikey · 19/09/2021 08:46

Sorry @bendmeoverbackwards I’ve only just noticed your question.
He’s in Culver House on park street. It’s only a small halls (100 students). He ‘finally’ messaged me last night to say he was having a great time. They hadn’t gone out but all five flat mates made dinner together. That makes me happy.

SeasonFinale · 19/09/2021 09:01

We dropped off Wednesday as DS booked a slot on the first possible available day! Fortunately I was able to persuade him to book an afternoon slot to allow us tk.make the drive down leaving at 9.30/10 ish. The upside was light traffic and only 2 other cars in the car park. We went to visit family in asouth Wales and encountered the horrific traffic homeward bound on the M5 and M42 !

jano69 · 19/09/2021 11:12

@SeasonFinale That must have been strange being one of the first drop offs at Bristol. Hope he's settling in nicely and the awful journey home is no more than a distant memory for you.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 19/09/2021 11:35

@bendmeoverbackwards and @Stillcrikey I really feel for you and I hope your teenagers settle in to uni life as quickly as possible.

For me it has been a bit of a roller coaster week as my DD was tearful, then partying and now has this horrible throat and cough. Needless to say my DD is missing home as she is not feeling great. I just keep being upbeat at how well she is doing and she sounds better when we finish a call. However, I'm exhausted and not sleeping that well. This parenting malarkey doesn't get any easier!

AvocadoPlant · 19/09/2021 14:11

@Dobbyismyabsolutefav my DD has the same bug! Currently sat in bed felling grotty.

It’s horrible when they’re unwell snd you aren’t able to be with them, hoping it’s a short illness, and will clear up with a couple of days rest,

BigWoollyJumpers · 19/09/2021 15:20

@AvocadoPlant @Dobbyismyabsolutefav

Sorry to hear both your DC's have a bug - obvious question, are the fully jabbed and will they be getting a test? I noted that there are facilities on-site for picking up LFT's and I think getting the full PCR too.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 19/09/2021 15:56

@AvocadoPlant My DD has been a bit wobbly feeling unwell but she is a few days in now and felt a bit brighter today. I've just booked a couple of nights in Exeter in a few weeks time so that cheered her up.

@bigwoollyjumpers Yes my DD is fully vaccinated and has been testing daily and is negative for covid. LFR's are freely available on campus so my DD has a stock of them. I'm pretty sure it is freshers 'flu' as it started with a sore throat and the cold is coming out now! Not really surprising that seasonal bugs are going around as social distancing and mask wearing is not compulsory now.

AvocadoPlant · 19/09/2021 15:58

@BigWoollyJumpers - thank you.
DD is double vaccinated, and LFT is negative.

We’ve been face timing, and it looks and sounds like a heavy cold. She’s feeling tired, achey, and a bit bleurgh!
But has had some tea and toast (thanks to her lovely flatmates) and is sitting up doing her reading for tomorrow’s lecture.

AvocadoPlant · 19/09/2021 16:04

@Dobbyismyabsolutefav the sore throat is how DDs started too then seemed to get better, before breaking into the full on cold/freshers flu she has now.

In fairness, DD has thoroughly enjoyed Freshers and has been out every night (bar last night), so I’m not surprised it’s all caught up with her.
DD hasn’t done any big group socialising (ie large bars/nightclubs/festivals) since the first lockdown, so I’m sure her natural immunity to ordinary bugs is lower than it was a couple of years ago.

AvocadoPlant · 19/09/2021 16:05

@chopc we need the new thread! x

eggsandwich · 19/09/2021 16:47

Well we dropped dd off at her accommodation yesterday in Bristol, and it was really nice, even she said as she walked into her room “omg my room is really nice, luckily she has en- suite as well.

It took us 4 four hours to get home so basically an 8 hour round trip, but got a text followed by face time this morning for a while and she seems to of settled in well though it’s early days and went out last night till 1am, oh how it is to have the stamina of youth.

All good and hopefully each and everyone no matter what university they are going too has the experience and results at the end that they hope.

BigWoollyJumpers · 19/09/2021 16:50

Good to hear both are negative. Hopefully just the good old fashioned freshers flu. DD1 had it really badly when she first went to Uni. I have told DD2 to expect to catch something and to take to her bed if she does! Hopefully her flatmates will bring tea and toast too, that is lovely to hear how they are already looking after one another.

321zyx · 19/09/2021 18:11

@AvocadoPlant @Dobbyismyabsolutefav @BigWoollyJumpers there's a lot of it around! In lieu of a long planned overseas holiday DS went on a UK city break 2 weeks ago with a group of school friends - northern city known for its' 'nightlife' Grin. He came back with the worst cold/cough I've known him to have. PCR was negative, he's feeling fine now but still coughing 2 weeks later - hopefully he won't get it again on arrival at Uni! Hopefully your DC feel better soon.

chopc · 19/09/2021 22:30

Have started a new thread "Another path ..... the journey begins"

See you all there!
