@Pumpkintopf if you have time visit the V and A which is right opposite. It's free but you should book tickets online

Notagardener · 10/08/2021 22:57

Ha, it was just Dd and a friend who went. However I actually went on an open day to LSE few years ago, so know it better than DD Smile.

I was going to suggest exactly that
@Pumpkintopf
! It’s a beautiful museum and I highly recommend their afternoon tea!

chopc · 10/08/2021 23:05

Oh yes @Notagardener . Didn't have afternoon tea but their scones looked and tasted very nice indeed

Pumpkintopf · 10/08/2021 23:05

Ooh thanks both!! Top tip and maybe something of particular interest to DD who is rather being dragged along for the ride!

Sorry not - cool that you know the uni so well though!

chopc · 10/08/2021 23:05

Sorry that should have been @bendmeoverbackwards I tagged

@Pumpkintopf your dd may enjoy the handbag exhibition but you need to pre book. Have a lovely day.
Notagardener · 10/08/2021 23:09

Chops, I would not have minded afternoon tea at the v&a though....

Maggiethecat · 10/08/2021 23:48

Congratulations to your lovely Dc! And thanks for this thread and for the collective support especially when things looked very bleak!

Dd has confirmation from Bristol for a deferred place - English.

She's delighted and is off to a job interview tomorrow 😀

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 07:03

@Maggiethecat that's brilliant news! Good luck to your dd for her interview.

shallIswim · 11/08/2021 08:43

@MidLifeCrisis007

Well done to all who received results today... and what a fab set they were!!! Soooo many A stars. Oxbridge were fools to redirect them!

DS1 (gap year) is now panicking that he can't communicate with Durham. Everything was being sent to his school email account but they recently closed that down as he left the school a year ago. Unfortunately for him, the rest of the family are all in Greece and we left him at home house and dog sitting so he's having to panic alone!

At least he knows his Durham college.... it's the ugly one with the duck pond! Not his first choice but he's actually very happy about it.

I shall be raising a glass to you all this evening from here in sunny Greece!

Ugly one with duck pond?! That'll be the magnificent Van Mildert!

Goodness there were a lot of us weren’t/aren’t there? Just goes to show…

bendmeoverbackwards · 11/08/2021 10:17

Student bank accounts - dd has a normal current account with Lloyds - are there any advantages to a specific student account?

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 10:24

@bendmeoverbackwards - generally the interest free overdraft is considered the biggest benefit, rightly or wrongly!

They also offer 'free' gifts which may be more or less useful-

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 10:29

In fact, funny you should mention it as DH was saying this morning that Barclays offers a 12-month subscription to Perlego, which gives online access to textbooks & other reading material- does anyone know how useful this is likely to be??

jano69 · 11/08/2021 10:31

Thanks @chopc - that list is really helpful. We're a good team!

mumsneedwine · 11/08/2021 10:39

@Pumpkintopf I expect the Uni will have access to a lot of textbooks on line.

Xenia · 11/08/2021 10:40

I am still following everyone on this thread, even though my last son there left Bristol last month (my twins start their final law course on 6 Sept). Well done for all these really good exam results.

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 10:57

Ah thanks @mumsneedwine that's good to know. As I bored DS with this morning, 'in my day' we used to have to try to reserve the relevant books at the uni library and there were never enough copies when everyone was writing their essay on Skinner behaviourist theory at the same time having left it till the last minute

Which brings me on to how pissed off I am this morning that the usual noises are being made about 'grade inflation'. Do they not understand that the high grades this year are as a result of no kid having had a mare on the day of the exam - and isn't that a good thing?! GIF these kids work so much harder than I ever did- the content for the 'new' GCSEs is massive and A levels are really tough, can we stop diminishing their achievement?! Sorry, rant over.

@Xenia great to see you. You've been a massive source of advice on this thread, glad you're still here.

DahliaMacNamara · 11/08/2021 11:59

If I can just hop onto this path for a second to put in my twopennorth...screw anyone who wants to denigrate our DC's achievements. The bright kids I know worked their arses off to make sure they got the grades they needed. Some of them might have been more naturally inclined to reserve their best efforts for a full-on exam season, and the cards might have fallen differently in those circumstances, but that wasn't to be. Not their fault.
In any case, what else was there to do but work? Why wouldn't that reap rewards? Sheesh.

Thank you @Pumpkintopf I'm not sure I would want dd having a free overdraft!

Thank you @Xenia nice to hear from you.

I love the happy buzzing vibe on this thread at the moment, so different from those bleak days in January.

Dd had a great night out with friends last night, she got home after midnight and had an early (6am!) shift at work this morning! She's having a nap now. Hope everyone's dc are enjoying the celebrations!

Very annoying about the grade inflation thing. It is interesting thinking about if exams are really the best way to assess someone. Like you say @Pumpkintopf someone could be having an off day and under perform in a 2 hour exam when in reality they are a really bright capable student at the top of their class. Conversely, some less able students might be taught how to pass exams but lack the real depth of knowledge of their subject. I don't know what the answer is.

Engley · 11/08/2021 12:50

Congratulations to all your lovely DC .They deserve all their achievements after a difficult year.
My son is very happy with his grades and will be starting LSE in September.
A lot of his friends are going to London unis-Imperial,UCL and Kings so he should have fun.

Pumpkintopf · 11/08/2021 12:53

Just chilling in the sunshine at the Imperial campus outside one of their bars having had a nice little wander round! It's been so useful, I really feel like I can visualise better now what this place is like.
