@jano69 - wrong children crossing paths! DD (17) was at Boardmasters, DS1 (who is Durham bound) spent the weekend at Henley instead!

DS1 has his driving test on bank holiday Monday (30th Aug), having passed his theory test only last Sunday. He suddenly got his backside into gear after realising his younger sister could be driving before him!
What a small world we live in - eldest DS was in Henley this weekend too!

jano69 · 17/08/2021 20:01

www.boardmasters.com

I think everyone who went to Boardmasters (a big festival in Newquay) had a good time but they've come back with horrible coughs and covid by the sounds of it...

Longtimenewsee · 17/08/2021 20:45

Well done to the new drivers Star
I hope those with a positive covid test have an easy time of it and aren’t too poorly

Revengeofthepangolins · 17/08/2021 20:51

DS1 has his UCL accommodation, earlier than I had feared. All seems more real now - time to start the traditional funny-sized fitted sheet hunt which I recall cropping up regularly on Mumsnet over the years. Smile

Jng1 · 17/08/2021 21:18

I see John Lewis has its 'Uni Essentials' pages up, with lots of very un-studenty looking rooms Grin !

loofah2 · 17/08/2021 21:38

@Eastisup

Congratulations to your ds *@calculatorqueen and good luck to your ds @Tenpastseven* !! Still waiting to hear about accommodation here but dd says some people in her group chat are starting to hear so looks like UCL are starting to roll out the offers
Could I ask where the group chats are for UCL? DD hasn't found these yet. She has her accommodation and has an IC hall too but would like to know when UCL students might be moving in
Notagardener · 17/08/2021 21:42

Loofah, has your dc got a 39 or 40 wk contract in her IC hall. Mine has 40 wk, and as per their website I seem to remember contract starts 12 Sept . That's' when dc is moving in...

It's 40 weeks I think and we have contract date start on the 12th as well but UCL freshers is much later. I'll message you as wondering if we have the same halls.

DS has been chatting to his new flatmates about sharing equipment, no toaster or kettle provided which is a first for me, other DC always had them provided. They are planning a joint IKEA trip for a cheese grater! And he's had confirmation lectures will be Face to face.

DD still has no accommodation to go back for her 4th year, which is a worry. It's a long story. Her flatmate didn't even see last year's flat, she is an international student and wasn't able to get back. That was a lot of rent for an unseen flat. Last two years they've been fine looking in July, it's normal for her uni city, this year not so much!

We have friends flat contents here since the first lockdown, when she hurriedly flew home the week before lockdown was announced.

Eastisup · 18/08/2021 08:42

Well, dd has her accommodation now as well and she is not happy! She hasn't accepted it yet as I though it would be prudent to consider it from all angles! It's a lovely looking room with a double bed and en-suite and under her budget ....but it's out in Victoria!!
@Revengeofthepangolins is the ic hall your ds has been offered close to the uni? wondering if she should just accept it?
@loofah2 I think she just found a group of people to chat to from the student room when she was waiting to hear if her application was successful. I'll ask her when she gets up!

aroundincircles21 · 18/08/2021 08:58

@tenpastseven It seems they all want Hiatt Baker! He thinks he should have put it as his top 3 choices now, although, having read the Bristol News I think he's lucky to have got his 2nd/3rd choice.... there just isn't going to be enough accommodation in Bristol for this years intake!
Hoping to move in 18th/19th. Will try to post his thoughts about Goldney at some point.

SeasonFinale · 18/08/2021 10:09

The slots for move in were available yesterday for Bristol. Although the tenancy doesn't officially start until 18 Saeotember DS has booked his for 15 September as they let them in earlier to spread them out.

SeasonFinale · 18/08/2021 10:10

DS had 5 Hiatt Baker choices in his 9 and got Badock which is apparently Steetonian

SeasonFinale · 18/08/2021 10:10

*Streetonian

Re Bristol accomm
DD2 going into 3rd year Bristol
She was in Clifton Hill House had a great time and now sharing a flat with 5 from her floor at CHH. Great location.
Bend , parking tricky round CHH but they allow you close for drop off.
Can be a hike up several floors ( there is a lift ) I have always found blue IKEA bags invaluable for student move in day. Previous tip from mumsnet years ago.
Goldney has fabulous gardens, if you ever get a chance go and see the shell grotto. Totally unexpected , we chanced upon a Goldney garden open day this year and had a grotto guided tour. Think they were always a bit nervous of students trashing it ( this did happen decades ago ) so not sure what kind of access current students get. Goldney usually the most popular of the Clifton options.
I personally like Manor Hall where my goddaughter was last year.

BigWoollyJumpers · 18/08/2021 10:18

@Dobbyisahouseelf, @Jng1, @calculatorqueen, @AvocadoPlant

DD has her accommodation, second choice, St Germans, has her block, but not her flat number yet. She is happy. East Park is of course newer and therefore nicer, but she has got "quiet" accommodation, six to a flat, full double bed and right next to the Forum. I think it will suit her well. Moving in on Sunday 12th.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 18/08/2021 10:25

That's good news @BigWoollyJumpers I'm at the vaccine centre with DD so hopefully she hears what accommodation she has very soon.

@BigWoollyJumpers That's great news! I think DSs Lafrowda block is next to St Germans, rather in the quad which featured heavily in last years news! It should be a bit quieter for them.

AvocadoPlant · 18/08/2021 11:06

@BigWoollyJumpers That sounds lovely - I'm guessing your DD requested quieter accommodation? I was hoping DD might request somewhere quiet, but she's a bit of a contradiction as she likes it peaceful to study, but also likes parties and people round in her down time!

So of the 5 Exeter bound DC I think this is what we have:

BigWoollyJumpers- DD - Exeter - History - St Germans
Dobbyisahouseelf- DD - Exeter - Geography - tbc
calculatorqueen - DS - Exeter - Economics - Lafrowda
Jng1Exeter - DS - Drama/Film TV - Lafrowda
AvocadoPlant- DD - Exeter - History - East Park

Its all getting very real now :)
We are also moving DD in on the 12th - I'm hoping it might be a bit quieter than the Saturday, and that we can have a family meal out on the 11th before she heads off ....

We don't have a slot yet though...and am getting a bit worried as we have a 3 hour + drive. Would like a middayish slot, but I assume so would everyone else!

AvocadoPlant · 18/08/2021 11:36

@BigWoollyJumpers DD had to complete an online induction form, mainly by ticking each page to say she had read it, and was then directed to book her moving in slot at the end of that process. Is it similar at St Germans?

Also we have requested mid-afternoon slot as we know from experience that DD will take forever on her moving day and I doubt we'll get away much before midday (approx. 2.5 hour drive from here)

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2021 12:00

Thanks @olliepolly DD’s room number is F32, any idea what floor it is on?

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/08/2021 12:01

Also does anyone know of universities still have Reading Weeks to tie in with school half terms?

Jng1 · 18/08/2021 12:18

Exeter crowd - DS has just informed me he's found a link on TheStudentRoom where people are sharing their accommodation/course and contact details:

www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=6677918&p=95730867&page=56#post95730867

Spreadsheet here: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZW0RNMtWaqWulB8uFGYorFRD6raJqTFWAnbsGevluT4/edit

Form here: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfAoYdbye6Mgi2EsV3psd4OCT9jPHDxH-THf2pie6klfkOKFg/viewform

He emailed to ask for details of his exact flat and has had a reply that "We do not release room and flat numbers prior to a students arrival as these are provisional and subject to change."
Hmm A bit unhelpful.
