New thread ready for us.

First time going through uni applications. DS has had an offer from S'ton but not heard from his other 4 (Bristol, Loughborough, Bath and Manchester) though they have acknowledged his applications. I'm getting nervous. He's applied for MEng in Mech Eng and predicted 3 A*/D1/D2s.

MillicentMartha · 21/12/2019 11:39

Welcome to the third thread. A supportive and information sharing thread for those applying to university.

UCAS forms pretty much in and offer holder days beckon. Mocks are being taken. By the end of this thread most will have decided their firm and insurance and our DC will be into revision mode.

When did his form go in, MotherOfSoupDragons? (Love the name, btw!)

End of November I think. He's still in bed so can't check. I should really namechange but I like this one too.

MarchingFrogs · 21/12/2019 11:56

Universities actually have until early May to communicate their decisions to those who made an on-time application, although (annoyingly) applicant days tend to be over and done with earlier than this and yes, it is very frustrating for the applicant to be hanging on for a response. From that list, Bristol, at least, seems to have a policy of telling relevant applicants when they are 'on hold', one assumes those who weren't an immediate 'no' but not an obvious 'yes', either.

MotherOfSoupDragons · 21/12/2019 12:01

I think he might be on hold at Bristol but they haven't told him.

Gatekeeper · 21/12/2019 12:23

thanks @MillicentMartha

just read your post- missed it originally. Bit concerned about Newcastle being a party uni but dd seems unfazed and says she is asking for quiet accomodation so that's me telt! She is attending a week long summer school there in July so that will help a lot

Hoghgyni · 21/12/2019 12:23

Thanks Millicent

MillicentMartha · 21/12/2019 12:29

With those predictions I can’t see why he would be on hold! They’re great!

DS got his form in in late October and got acknowledgements quite quickly and his first 4 offers were between 10 and 20 days. Manchester was later, just after his interview. It may be that my DS beat the ‘rush’ of applications and yours is in the thick of them. He may now not hear until after Christmas, frustratingly.

I think on MN our DC are generally much quicker than average getting their forms in. Self selected overly invested parents! Wink So no need to worry yet. I’m sure he’ll have some offers through soon with those predicted grades.

Gatekeeper she sounds like she’s got it under control. Grin Is it an ASD summer school? I know Bath uni does one. It’ll be great preparation regardless.

First, check your mum wants to wash the kitchen floor before loads of people come round to supper.

Then, decide to rationalise your Macbeth notes...

I'm here (placemarking), and merry Christmas to you all - try to have a rest 🎄💤😀

Snozzlemaid · 21/12/2019 21:01

Just checking in to new thread.

aibutohavethisusername · 21/12/2019 22:07

Hi all. Just placemarking too. DD has four offers and is just waiting on Oxford on January 14th.

FabTab · 22/12/2019 00:24

DS has an interview at York. It has said the (Maths) department will recommend he is made an offer and:
“If you attend an interview and perform well your offer may be reduced by one A Level grade or equivalent.”
Does anyone have any experience/ knowledge of how often a grade is dropped?

Hoghgyni · 22/12/2019 05:35

DD has an offer for humanities at York which was reduced from A*AA to ABB, but she didn't have to attend an interview for this. How keen is he on York and how is easy is it to get there. A few people have had Skype interviews for places like Manchester.

HuaShan · 22/12/2019 06:00

Checking in, thanks MillicentMartha. Thankfully 4 offers in and O interview done, no more mocks until March so hopefully a nice quiet Christmas on this household . Peace to all.

wineoclockthanks · 22/12/2019 08:55

Thank you for the new thread.

DS has still to put in his 5th choice. He has 3 offers already from his top 3 but they are all very high (A*, AA or AAA) and he can't decide whether York or Nottingham are likely to (possibly) offer him something lower.

Hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and a relaxing time is had by all.

zzzzzzzx · 22/12/2019 09:30

Do you think any admissions offices are open this week? DD thinks she should have received an email about offer days from Bristol because a later email refers to it.

ucasmistake · 22/12/2019 09:37

I have 2 DC applying this year, one with grades in hand and the other predicted grades.

DC 1 applied 2nd Dec with achieved A*AAA has received no offers. (Humanities courses requiring AAA-ABB)

DC 2 applied 9th Dec with predicted ABC has received all 5 offers. (Science courses requiring AAB-BBB)

Is this normal?

StegosaurusRex · 22/12/2019 10:19

Hi,
Hope it's ok for me to join in. I've applied for Bristol next year as a mature student and I've never applied to uni before, so it's interesting to see where others are in the process. Am I the only one on here applying for themselves?

MarchingFrogs · 22/12/2019 10:48

Am I the only one on here applying for themselves?

One hopes that all the young people referred to here actually did as well and any use of we is just a figure of speechGrin.

What course are you applying for?

StegosaurusRex · 22/12/2019 11:11

Ha! I'm tired. I meant the only one on here about their own application and not for DC Blush
I've applied for palaeontology and evolution. I'm doing an access course in biosciences this year, so I know the process will be a bit
different for me anyway

MillicentMartha · 22/12/2019 11:27

Welcome all. Stegosaurus I hope you can put up with all our parental angst! Grin

zzzzzzzx I guess you’ve double checked spam? Does your spam get deleted after a week or so? There may be some admissions people in on Monday, worth a call just in case.

DS has to revise over Christmas, poor bugger. Mocks start 6th Jan. He’s currently playing dungeons and dragons with 4 very noisy and geeky mates, though.
