ucasmistake it may be that the humanities depts at your DC1’s choices are just a bit slower. Have they received acknowledgements?

StegosaurusRex · 22/12/2019 11:49

Thanks @MillicentMartha :)
Obviously, slightly different angst, but I have plenty of it myself! Ha ha. Putting a lot on the line for this, giving up work and using my savings to pay the bills! Thankfully, I'm doing well on the course so far, but didn't have any final unit grades in time for applying, so I'm putting a lot of faith in my PS and my tutor references.

I hope the revision goes well and doesn't make his Christmas break too stressful. I'm lucky, we have ongoing assignments and tests for each unit rather than big exams at the end of the year

zzzzzzzx · 22/12/2019 14:30

Yes, checked spam. Obviously no worries with it but quite keen to see Bristol since didn’t do open day.

MillicentMartha · 22/12/2019 15:58

@zzzzzzzx have you seen this?

Coming from the other side as a head of ks5, I still have one student who has not put their UCAS form in.

Hoghgyni · 22/12/2019 17:39

Stegosaurus that sounds really interesting. Please, please, please don't take this the wrong way, but what drove you to apply for it? We only usually hear of slightly more mature students applying for things which will drive a career like law or midwifery. Meanwhile you've picked something incredibly cool.

FabTab · 22/12/2019 17:49

@Hoghgyni DS likes York but he can be quite anxious and I’m not sure how he’ll get on in an interview. If they didn’t reduce his offer I think he would be really put off.

Hoghgyni · 22/12/2019 18:31

York is one of my favourite cities & I thought the campus and accommodation were both nice. dd Wasn't so keen, but her other choices are very traditional. Has your DS been there for a look?

StegosaurusRex · 22/12/2019 19:58

@hoghgyni not sure how I could take that badly, and I'm not slightly more mature, I'm probably double the age of most of the A-level students applying! Grin
I've always been interested in dinosaurs and human evolution, but for some reason never considered pursuing it. I had a breakdown in May and decided it was time I did something just for me for a change and it was a real lightbulb moment that came out of nowhere and I literally facepalmed at not having thought of it before.
Thank you for asking :)

ucasmistake · 22/12/2019 20:05

Millicent- yes, acknowledgements received quickly by all universities, just no offers... yet.

We just presumed it would be an easy 'yes' as DC has achieved grades. Last year they got offers for similar courses within days of applying.

I remember Durham being slow to give out offers last year to Gap Students, but DC has not applied there or to Scottish universities.

FabTab · 22/12/2019 20:11

DS has been to York. It ticks his main requirement as it’s a campus.

FabTab · 22/12/2019 20:13

UCas - hope your DC gets offers soon. Must be very disconcerting.

mimbleandlittlemy · 22/12/2019 21:13

Place marking.

dayswithaY · 23/12/2019 07:37

Hi just hoping for some reassurance. DS was all ready to go with UCAS application but his school keep holding it up and returning it to him with revisions like word changes etc. They did this on the last day of term, UCAS is down for maintenance until later today so he can't even see the changes they want him to make. Even then it can't be finalised until school starts again on 7 January. I have emailed the head of Sixth form hoping he might read it before Christmas.

I'm just looking for reassurance from you lovely lot that its not too late and it will be ok. Will he be at a massive disadvantage if he applies so close to the 15th? I just don't want him to miss out and I'm annoyed at the school for their lack of communication and delays. They took forever to do his reference and to approve his PS which is why it has all dragged on into December. Is this lateness a cause for concern? I just need to unload my worries here!

MarchingFrogs · 23/12/2019 07:49

No, he will not be disadvantaged by only sending it off at any time up to the deadline. Or, for a lot of courses, after this, but the universities' agreement with UCAS only requires equal consideration for all applications made up to the deadline, so that can be a risky strategy. Whatever the school's official internal deadline was, they will probably be used to some going up to the wire. Especially if the school makes a habit of fiddling around with students' applications.

MillicentMartha · 23/12/2019 10:55

What MarchingFrogs said. So long as it is in before the 15th Jan, universities have agreed to treat applications the same with no preference for earlier submissions. It’s very frustrating, though, I’m sure, especially with Christmas now in the way. Flowers

As pp have said DS’s friends got the same kind of offers even if they applied on the last day (and some in the few days after!) I feel your pain though. Our problem last year was DS rather than school.

zxcv123 · 23/12/2019 12:08

@FabTab - last year DS got exactly the same email from the Maths Dept. In the end, he didn't go to the interview because he already had all 5 offers and he'd been to the York Open Day. He wrote them a nice email saying terribly sorry it clashes with my mocks and they reduced the offer anyway Grin

Consequently, I'd assume that those emails offering reduced offers are simply to encourage you to attend, so that you see the campus and they can sell the course to you. I would imagine everyone is very likely to get a reduced offer if they interview and are suitably enthusiastic.

FabTab · 23/12/2019 12:17

Thanks zxcv123 that’s really helpful. Where did your DS end up going?

zxcv123 · 23/12/2019 13:06

He's at Oxford. He really liked York's campus though and the staff we met were all really approachable.

FabTab · 23/12/2019 13:30

Thanks @zxcv123 I will encourage him to go to the interview. I hope your DS enjoys his time at Oxford.

oneteen · 23/12/2019 15:37

Thanks for the new thread @MillicentMartha.

DD also has mock exams straight after the Xmas break...she's done a little bit of revision but was working most of last week/weekend ...hopefully, she will get her head down after boxing day.

Happy Christmas to everyone ...2020 will be an exciting year for our young adults.

errorofjudgement · 23/12/2019 17:20

I don’t post very much but am following the thread. DD has had an offer from Exeter today, such a boost for her! She’s applying to drama schools so has only applied to a couple of proper courses as her back up. As she’s on s gap year, it’s unconditional so we know that she can definitely go away next year!

dayswithaY · 23/12/2019 17:36

Hi thanks to all who responded to me in my hour of angst. Head of Sixth amazingly emailed back and somehow was think we have completed the application. Obviously it's nearly flipping Christmas but it's done now.

MarchingFrogs · 23/12/2019 17:58

but it's done now.

Xmas Smile
