@Hoghgyni DS would love to stay locally but it isn’t an option given our local universities One is too academic and one is too vocational. He isn’t being ‘Goldilocks’ they really are two extremes.

Hoghgyni · 29/12/2019 20:11

Oops, meant to tag Flamingo. Getting my Fs in a twist!

HuaShan · 31/12/2019 07:36

Wishing everyone a Happy New Year - next year will be a big one for our dc so fingers crossed for them all.

HenryIV · 31/12/2019 11:38

Hello, can I join in? DD has 4 of her 5 offers in (Manchester, Liverpool, Warwick and Cardiff) - just waiting for Kings but she's decided she doesn't want London anyway. She was going to leave the application in (and wait for the inevitable rejection as it's a very competitive course) but school have advised her to withdraw. Don't see much point as there are no other courses she'd like to apply to - are there any other benefits?

Whatagoodidea · 31/12/2019 12:25

If there is no other choice she wants, just leave it as it is. You never know what may happen

Ginfordinner · 31/12/2019 12:34

HenryIV Manchester dragged their feet when DD was waiting for an interview/offer. She was on a gap year and had a firm offer from Newcastle, and didn't like Manchester anyway, so she withdrew her application. I don't understand why Manchester took so long because she already had the required grades.

bpisok · 31/12/2019 12:34

They only advantage I can see is that she can firm/insure now and start to think about preferred accommodation (get herself at the front on the queue).
The potential disadvantage is that if she ends up in clearing Kings may take into account that she previously withdrew her application (no idea whether that would happen or whether they wouldn't care?!?!?). But I assume that Kings standard entry requirements are at least as high as the others so probably not relevant.
Does she know which Unis she wants to firm and insure?

MarchingFrogs · 31/12/2019 17:23

Entering her firm and insurance (if relevant, not if the one she intends to firm is an unconditional, of course) so early on can also be a disadvantage, of course, if there is the slightest risk that she might change her mind more than a fortnight down the line.

thesunwillout · 31/12/2019 20:15

Can I ask, is there any disadvantage to waiting to firm or insure.
DD is not able to visit Liverpool till offer holders day in Feb.
Already visited Cardiff.

MarchingFrogs · 31/12/2019 22:57

If the potential firm choice opens applications for accommodation early, restricts it to firm offer holders but runs the system as booking a specific room in real time, then there is the risk of missing out on getting one's preferred accommodation. However, some / many universities run the system as inviting applicants to express preferences from a certain date, but rooms are not allocated and paid for until after results day, when offers are confirmed (or not). In that case, there is certainly no need to rush into making a decision that one might regret.

Offers are only rescinded if the offer holder fails to confirm their firm and insurance by the relevant deadline - it's not a first come, first served set up.

thesunwillout · 01/01/2020 09:48

MarchingFrogs thankyou for the reply and information.
Just looking at Liverpool halls and the prices are astronomical, £176 a week.
Shall be looking for alternatives!

Ginfordinner · 01/01/2020 09:50

Wow. That's a lot!
DD is probably in the nicest halls at her university and it is £137 a week.

Kimlek · 01/01/2020 10:08

@FanSpamTastic - DD has applied for economics. She's been given offers by Exeter, Nottjngham and Glasgow and rejected by Leeds.
Can I please ask what your DDs predictions are please and what grade the offers have come in at. Do Leeds want AAA?

MarchingFrogs · 01/01/2020 10:37

Unless one has a specific need for an en suite room, there is cheaper accommodation at Liverpool, though?

FanSpamTastic · 01/01/2020 11:25

@kimlek - she has AAB as predicted grades. Leeds did say they would be unlikely to offer on that basis. But she decided to give it a go anyway!

MillicentMartha · 01/01/2020 11:47

Just looking at Liverpool accommodation, it is expensive! Even the more basic rooms are around £140. Unexpected for Liverpool, I’d have thought it would be cheaper. Manchester have rooms that go down to £105 or so.

Price and availability of accommodation wasn’t something I checked out when DS1 applied, it’s been much higher on our list of priorities this time around. DS1 was lucky to live in cheap but basic accommodation at Warwick, under £80/week in his self catered halls. It made life as a student much more comfortable in all other aspects. He was perfectly happy with shared bathrooms and quite a small room, so long as he could afford to buy decent food and go out! Good job he didn’t need his insurance uni, much more expensive and no guaranteed accommodation for insurance places.

Thank you @FanSpamTastic - good luck to your DD!! The grades are high for a lot of the economics courses.

JufusMum · 02/01/2020 19:28

Hello all!
Hope everyone had a nice Christmas.
DD has offers from Edge Hill, Wrexham Glyndwr, Liverpool John Moores and Uni of South Wales (unconditional at USW) to study Professional Policing - with an interview at Carlisle next week. But I think she is pretty much set on Wrexham Glyndwr. Mocks were done before Christmas so she has spent most of the Christmas holiday festering in her bed emerging only to eat.

MillicentMartha · 02/01/2020 20:00

Brilliant, JufusMum. Is the Wrexham offer a good one?

Happy New Year to everyone...

No news here - DD still waiting to hear back from Warwick ...only in school for exams next week has 2 on Wednesday and 1 each on Thursday and Friday not sure about the following week.

JufusMum · 02/01/2020 20:59

Millicent 112 UCAS points so okay x

MillicentMartha · 02/01/2020 23:09

DS is back to mocks on Monday. Yuk!

HesMyLobster · 03/01/2020 01:24

Happy New Year all, I hope everyone has enjoyed Christmas and DC have all managed some r&r. (DD's recent discovery of the local nightlife has meant not so much "rest" for her, but at least she's had fun! )
Back to school and straight into Mocks on Monday for her too.
She has been managing a couple of hours revision most days, but not nearly as much as she said she'd be doing at the beginning of the holiday when she said she was only taking Christmas Day off.

errorofjudgement · 03/01/2020 07:16

Happy New Year and good luck to all taking mocks.
DDs mocks were in Feb last year but came straight after rehearing and performing in a contemporary Play. She was totally shattered and pretty stressed out.

Whatagoodidea · 03/01/2020 07:45

Just paid DS2 accomadation £1100 for next term so about 110 per week. This is in Scotland, self catering in shared flat, not ensuite.
