For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

guad if he is well, i would ignore it
ears do bleed if you scratch them a bit
you would surely know if ear drum burst - it is painful!

pointy what have i done?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 19:54

pointy if you had huge mound of veg on your plate it will be more than TWO portions i assure you

OP posts:
pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:02

but it says one portion is 3 tablespoons of veg. Tablespoons are big, a heaped one is a lorra lorra peas. Should it be more of a dessertspoon?

You are outrageous with your lists, franny. Really you are. I can only imagine you are eating something nearly every minute of the day

mollyroger · 08/05/2009 20:06

dh is cooking mexican chicken (tomatoes/onion)with - wonder of wonders - a salad!

I have done 2 hours' gardening and I have been bouncing on our trampette mini excercise tramploine which I scored offa freecycle

Tell you what Franny and Guad, I can feel every muscle in my arms from those bingo wing excercises. That's good, isn't it!

pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:08

do you have weights, moll, or are you just using tins or equivalent?

mollyroger · 08/05/2009 20:20

pointy, we have 2 neon pink 5kgs dumbell thingies which I have no idea how or when we acquried them. They moved in with DH 18 years ago....he seems to think they were his (male) flatmate's back then

pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:24

where do people keep dumbbells?

a) bottom of wardrobe
b) in a corner of a room
c)in teh hallway/porch

mollyroger · 08/05/2009 20:28

well ours live in the bedroom in a forgotton, dusty corner. With frequent forays into ds1's room...

mollyroger · 08/05/2009 20:28

these are tiny, it's not like a home gym or summat.

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:29

hey molly if you can do tricep extensions with 5 k you are doing well mate
i refuse to believe in your bingo wings in fact
mind you this is from a puny waif armed person

pointy go and weigh 80g of a veg
it's not that much, really
160g of veg does not make "a huge mound"
i think you are taking honest reporting very seriously, but as a result are underestimating your portions (unlike the rest of these vegetable shysters talking up their fruit spreads and so on)
your homework for the weekend is to weigh stuff before eating

and also to STOP EXPRESSING OUTRAGE at people eating loads of f+v on a "lets eat loads of f+v" thread

OP posts:
pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:31

I have never weighed food. Are you trying to make me completely anal? I am worried enough about my increasing interest in portions.

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:32

and as for the 'heaped tablespoon thing' i think that is bollocks tbh
in my opinion a tablespoon is a measuring spoon you use to make cakes and so on
it's really small
by constrast one of those big metal spoons that get called a tablespoon is pretty big
80g of veg is not 3 heaped units of either of them, imo

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:33

pointy embrace the anality
dp just caught me weighing frozen peas (i was doubting myself) and demanded crossly "is this a mumsnet thing?"
i lied but i think he is onto us

OP posts:
pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:33

I wasn't suggesting you had big dumbbells, moll. Just thinking about where those sort of little things are kept and how they always end up being kept in annoying places.

Like one of those mini filing cabinet box things. I'm always catching sight of the ugly thing.

pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:35

do frozen peas not weigh more than cooked peas? [wink} (but I'm serious too)

Feel better about my portions. I will increase my recordings accrodingly.

mollyroger · 08/05/2009 20:36

Franny, I have always had very naturally muscular arms (nothing to do with permanently carrying round two extra-large boys for the first year of their respective lives )But I am aware everything is bit saggy these days (40 next year)
So this is sort of prevention

littlerach · 08/05/2009 20:37

Evening all.

Just popping in to say I got the seeds Fran, thaks v much.

DH did when I told hime who they were from

Dh off at 4am tomorrow morning

His son is doing ten tosr on special bike tomorrow.
(he has cerebal palsey so v big thing)

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:38

shit
perhaps they do
well what about broccoli? that'll be the same raw or cooked i bet
oh perhaps not
well if you think i am cooking peas just to weigh them you are quite wrong [indignant] [frothing slightly]

I have a rowing machine which I inherited from my sister, I keep it in a corner of the spare room. It's got something wromg with it though, you row backwards and then it gets stuck so you move forwards and kind of catapult yourself off the seat. I don;t think I've tried using it for about 2 years.

pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:40

cook them, fran. It will be an extra portion for you

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:40

woohoo at bike thing
hope it goes well
dp has a 10k race on sunday with some of his friends - it is meant to be fun thing but secretly he is getting VERY competitive about it

molly i have arm
i would love curvy strong arms
i didn't even have a hint of a muscle until i had ds1 and had to carry him around all over the place as you say
now with ds2 i just use the sling and my arms are languishing again

OP posts:
pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:40

what's tosr, little? Is that a typo?

mollyroger · 08/05/2009 20:41

franny gets carried away with the whole portion thingy

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:41

I don't NEED an extra portion, pointy [pointed]

however:

strawberries
melon
grapes
= 2 more

you are mostly right about the eating constantly thing, though

OP posts:
pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:43

I couldn't eat peas at tthis time of night. Would put me off my salsa and houmus
