For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

where's guad? guad are you eating tapas? i need someone to be competitive with
i've had 15 portions now

pointy in japan or somewhere the government advice is to eat THIRTEEN PORTIONS a day
it's only here they say a measly 5, because they think people will be freaked out if they say any more

pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:44

plus my peas are out in the freezer in my garage (another mark against my garbage kitchen) and it's a bit wet out there

pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:45

But it's not possible, fran! It's not possible to be crunching on things all day. Do they have no chores to do? Do they have no money to be made?

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:46

crikey

this is a bit crap!

"It is recommended that adults consume 400g or at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

Data from the latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey (NDNS) for adults show that in Great Britain just 13% of men and 15% of women consume the daily recommended five or more portions of fruit and vegetables.

Consumption of fruit and vegetables is lowest in young adults. Of the young adults (aged 19-24) surveyed in the NDNS, none of the men and just 4% of women ate five or more portions of fruit or vegetables a day."

13% of people! we need to spend more time spreading our vegetable gospel around, obviously

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:47

pointy believe me
it is possible
what are you doing on the thread if you don't BELIEVE in the premise of our fruity cult religion?

OP posts:
pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:49

I believe in teh target. Because I am now regulalry eating 5 or over and I used to struggle to reach 5.

I will aim for 13 a day when the dds ahve left home and my dh has left me

pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:49

sorry. I don;t want to be a dog in the manger

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:50

in japan it is SEVENTEEN
omg that is quite a lot
and 13 of them are meant to be vegetables
here i always trot this out but it is a good article

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:52

oh but look:

"The Japanese, who have seven to 13 vegetables and two to four fruit to aim for daily, do admittedly eat smaller portions - as little as 50g "counts". The maths, though, even if these nations got by on minimum recommendations, still leaves Britain's daily quota looking scant. In fact, when a Brit eats a "portion" of vegetables, it is about a third of a portion served up in Spain"

pointy shall we stop discussing this now
i don't think the lurkers are really going to be thrilled by it, even if i am
i bet you are sorry you got me started now

shall we talk about embarrassing ailments or something?

OP posts:
pointydog · 08/05/2009 20:54

yes, let's stop this crazy portion talk. It's not h ealthy

FrannyandZooey · 08/05/2009 20:58

well i have nothing else to say
and dp wants the computer and says there are peas all over the kitchen floor
i think i had better go now

When my grandmother lived in her own house, she painted beautiful birds on the bathroom walls.
She spent a lot of time drawing and painting. Also, when her eyesight was a little better, she used to do the most amazing embroideries (most people would call them tapestries, but they were her embroideries).
She could have sold them, especially one of The Green Man, several times over, but kept them because they were part of her.

pinkspottywellies · 08/05/2009 22:19

Cuc, avocado, pepper, tomato, peas, mushrooms, raisin (yes, singlar, 1 raisin!)

Oh dear. Need to get back on track.

Franny how much are you selling sling for?

We had a double glazing salesman here tonight. He was musing on why there is a stigma about them, whilst trotting out all the cliches

TooTicky · 08/05/2009 22:27

Pink, why the single raisin?

pinkspottywellies · 08/05/2009 22:58

DD had a box and dropped one on the floor so I ate it She also gave me a segment of the satsuma the man at the fruit and veg stall gave her. I forgot to list that!

How you doing TooT?

TooTicky · 08/05/2009 23:18

Oh, you must never forget your segment!!

I am a bit delicate but surviving, thanks. Strange time.

pinkspottywellies · 08/05/2009 23:21

Hello,

Have just got back from my first TV appearance, am knackered and have headache and hungry. House is tip, strwn with washing, and I have no idea why I am not in bed yet.

TooTicky · 08/05/2009 23:50

TV appearance? What have I missed?

SuperBunny · 09/05/2009 02:14

Wombling! First TV appearance? Do you have more lined up?

womblingalong · 09/05/2009 08:17

Apologies ladies,

Was exhausted last night, and rambling, it was not very exciting really, I think I oversold it. I was demonstrating products on one of the shopping channels and I might do it again.

It was definitely an experience, the presenters are compelling, as you just watch amazed they can talk so comfortably without stumbling for an hour or more on most products.

pinkspottywellies · 09/05/2009 08:45

Did anyone see we got a mention on the thread about an argument with 9yr old dd about her lunch? They wre talking about doing a 5 a day chart, the OP thought maybe 2 a day would be more like it and someone said she could up it gradually, then teach her to swear a lot and put her on the 10/10 thread

pinkspottywellies · 09/05/2009 08:46

Wow Wombling! What were you demonstrating? Where can I watch it?!

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 09/05/2009 08:50

wombling - more info please! What were you demonstrating, and on what channel???!!!

Toot - I know just what your granny means about embroidery. They take so much time and tlc, that it's like part of you. I hope you have some pieces of hers.

I am very ashamed about yesterdays list, but here you go.
