DH been unwell for a while and I finally dragged him to GP on Saturday. GP sent him for blood tests that were taken yesterday morning. Had a phone call at 9.30pm last night saying his White cell count was very very high and he needed to go to hospital and they were expecting us.
They rechecked blood and very very high (normal is 4-11, DH had 382!)
They have done chest xray but they just said they think its a blood disorder and something about bone marrow! Of course we are now thinking leukemia
I have had all of one hours sleep as didnt get home till 4am and baby woke at 5am. Im going back once seen DD1 off to school, and they said the hemotologist will be round first thing and we should have more answers then.
Anyone know anything other than cancer that it could be? Docs werent willing to say a lot last night tbh.
We all have to wear masks and gowns and his in isalation!
Help im panicing

well 2 months in, things areok. More results today. White cells still good, but liver not handling the drugs at all, so off to see another specialist soon.
Get % of cancer cells in 6 weeks, so hoping that shows good results.

Just seen this Lisa,am haem nurse and chronic leuk usually respond quite well to treatmentProb totally after the fact but glad dh is doing well

lisad123 · 28/05/2009 00:31

thanks tum, yes we have loads of good advice and things seem to be postitive and we are hoping for remission within a year. Do you know what they will do about liver problems? was a huge shock, but we live each day as it comes. Couldnt do within MN

wrinklytum · 28/05/2009 00:35

Depends on meds that are affecting liver, consultants will advise and adjust accordinglyGlad dh is in remission.Have nursed LOTS of pts who have achieved remission for years.dh seems to be progressing in right directon, take as a positive

lisad123 · 28/05/2009 00:42

his not in full remission, just that all outward signs arent there, the white cells ect. Last cancer count was 37%, so still soem way to go.
Just glad to be normal most days, his back at work and getting out on his bike, tbh you'd never know to look at him. He looks better now than he did a year ago.

Take each day as it comes and all that.dp has a chronic condition, and is immunocompromised.Even though I have the training I still panic a bit if he is unwell and has an infection. But honestly, cll is one of the more treatable haem cancers.Write down any questions for when you see the consultants, but it soundslike he is doing well

lisad123 · 28/05/2009 00:51

he has CML

OP posts:
wrinklytum · 28/05/2009 00:55

cll AND cml, both very treatable. The acute leuks much more aggressive.

lisad123 · 28/05/2009 01:00

i know, they thought it was aml when he first went in as wbc had reached 411 and spleen was so big it was pressing on stomach and bowels, you could see it poking out :s

still mostly good news atm, just need liver sorted but i know some of the girls here like to have a updated now and then.

OP posts:
wrinklytum · 28/05/2009 01:03

Glad it wasn't aml, sounds like he is doing wellGood luck with liver function tests

lisad123 · 05/07/2009 00:21

liver still not great. Waiting for next loads of results. They dont know if his rejecting drugs as his lost more weight and very tired.
