DH been unwell for a while and I finally dragged him to GP on Saturday. GP sent him for blood tests that were taken yesterday morning. Had a phone call at 9.30pm last night saying his White cell count was very very high and he needed to go to hospital and they were expecting us.
They rechecked blood and very very high (normal is 4-11, DH had 382!)
They have done chest xray but they just said they think its a blood disorder and something about bone marrow! Of course we are now thinking leukemia
I have had all of one hours sleep as didnt get home till 4am and baby woke at 5am. Im going back once seen DD1 off to school, and they said the hemotologist will be round first thing and we should have more answers then.
Anyone know anything other than cancer that it could be? Docs werent willing to say a lot last night tbh.
We all have to wear masks and gowns and his in isalation!
Help im panicing

Hi Lisa,
Just read your blog, hope your LO feeling better soon. That's the last thing you need
Re the money situation you wrote about on friday. Our McMillan nurse put us in touch with an advisor who was attached to the hospital and specialised in helping cancer patients with forms/benefits and even got us a grant from their fund for a little holiday for us, but it could of been used for anything. Have you been advised of this? If not, make sure you ask your link Mac nurse to refer you as all hospitals should have access to this, I would hate to think you may of slipped through the net. It's a nightmare coping with ill dh, children, home, family etc AND money worries - so at least you can get a bit of help with the money side.

Hi lisa
How's your DH doing now?

lisad123 · 25/03/2009 15:20

His doing ok. He started his second lot of chemo on its own today and this will be a long term drug, but only if he reacts well to it! Im really hoping he does as its his best hope. We find out monday!

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 25/03/2009 15:27

will keep my fingers crossed for Monday then x

lisad123 · 25/03/2009 15:31

Hope monday brings good news. Take it you went to the Harvester for the anniversary meal then lol. Why is Darren banned from salad?

lisad123 · 26/03/2009 16:13

salad bars have huge infection risks! His immune system is way to risky to risk any ifection, could kill him as he wont be able to fight it.

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 26/03/2009 17:01

Ah I thought you meant he couldn't have salad full stop! doh!

Abertawelass · 27/03/2009 22:00

Hi again, did a little searching after what you said this afternoon. Googled talking to children about cancer and found info from cancer research uk other hits included the BMJ. Try cancerhelp.org.uk/help/ hope it's of use. See you next week, get in touch if I can help ( I could always add some shopping in my trolley if you need it) :-) X

Hi, just read the whole thread, So sorry for you all it must of been such a shock. I just wanted to say that I am bone marrow donor and so many more people are nowadays.

Also my best friends dad had the same type of cancer, he did die 2 years back at 58 but he lived a completely full and active life for 25 years after being diagnosed.

thinking of you x

lisad123 · 30/03/2009 15:02

update:

Darrens responding well to the new chemo! whoo

however his liver isnt handling it and is not workignas well and one of his levels is very high!! We have to go back next week and they'll re test. If its continuing to rise they wil have to look at stoppping drugs, and retrying others. Im hoping it doesnt come to this, as this new chemo is his best shot!

nickschick · 30/03/2009 15:10

Lisa I havent spoken with you on threads before but you and your family have been in my prayers since I read this the other week. x

Elibean · 30/03/2009 16:10

re Darren's response to the chemo, hurrah!

I'll be hoping with you that the liver functions re-stabilize....if its any help, I underwent a year of chemo (for chronic hepatitis) and the first few weeks my liver function tests went shooting up - then my body adjusted, and I was able to carry on. I believe its not uncommon with many sorts of chemo, for that to happen. Fingers tightly crossed for you both, xxx

StealthPolarBear · 30/03/2009 18:34

So glad he is responding well, hope his liver adjusts

lisad123 · 02/04/2009 22:54
