singyswife

Precancerous cells are just that, precancerous. Not all of them would actually go onto turn into cancer, but as yet there aren't reliable, definitive tests which can identify in which people the cells would go onto to cancer.
However we can see a difference in the nuclei of abnormal cells. Those changes (called dyskaryosis) get more pronounced the more abnormal the cells become, so we can pick up both the fact they are abnormal and also how abnormal they are when we look at them in the lab.
Dyskaryosis is graded, the low grade changes quite often go away by themselves so they don't need you to be referred for investigation straight away. High grade dyskaryosis means the changes need further investigation and treatment but they are not cancer.
It is thought that if high grade dyskaryosis develops into cancer it would take between 10-15 years (though it can be different for different people). This means that even if the abnormal cells were not picked up on one screening test, they should be picked up the next one in 3 years and there should still be plenty of time to treat them before they potentially could become cancerous.
There is only about a 1-2% difference in detection rate between being screened annually and three-yearly.
See the NHS CSP website for more info. HTH

mm22bys · 02/03/2009 10:28

OK, I am a year late, and I am scared. I have the phone number of the surgery in front of me but I can't do it.

My last test four years ago was completely normal, and I know am being irrational, but I am scared - scared of the actual process, scared if they find something, scared of any treatment....

mm22bys · 02/03/2009 10:32

Guys, I have done it.

They are so nice at my GP, it was even a male receptionist, I just told him I needed a smear and did a dr or nurse need to do it.

He said just a nurse.

So I'm booked in for 9.30am on Wednesday morning.

(So much good has come of all the publicity, they are talking about it on Five Live now, women who refuse to have smears, and I am glad I saw this thread...)

EyeballsintheSky · 02/03/2009 11:43

Good girl mm22bys. It'll be fine

frumpygrumpy · 02/03/2009 15:07

mm22bys, good for you! So glad. And now you are empowered!!!!

Slur...........

Mine is now moved to a week today at the same time......although my very heavy period has gone off like a tap

mm22bys · 04/03/2009 12:16

Well, I had it done this morning, and while the actual procedure was very quick and painfree, and frankly nothing to worry about, they kept me waiting for nearly an hour! I got there at 9.15 for a 9.30 appointment, and I got called in at 10.10.

Not for clinical reasons, but because another patient was late!

I was fuming, that she was kept waiting, I, and no doubt other patients, were kept waiting....

I just do not understand why they can't take in a patient who has already checked in, if another patient is late!

Good news is that I'll get the result in two to three weeks, so much quicker than last time, and hopefully, all being well, I won't have to worry for another 3 years....

frumpygrumpy · 04/03/2009 12:52

shame for the wait but YEAH, you are done!

MuppetsMuggle · 04/03/2009 12:56

WynkenBlynkenandNod · 04/03/2009 13:14

Mine is 6 months overdue as I kept on forgetting to book it between day 10 and 16 of cycle as instructed in the letter.

Have just called surgery and am going next week.

EyeballsintheSky · 04/03/2009 13:19
mcfee · 04/03/2009 13:40

OK you've got to me. I year overdue. Just phoned and am booked in for 18th March 11.30.
Two weeks of terror!!

EyeballsintheSky · 04/03/2009 14:32

Yay mcfee!

S1ur · 08/03/2009 18:54

I am reporting in late and bumping smugly.

I went and booked and lay back and relaxed - with dd and ds saying "but what are you doing mummy?"

So there. I can now rest easy on my smug and screened fanjo for another x years. Course haven't got results yet but I am an optimist.

jalopy · 08/03/2009 20:31

I've booked mine. It's in a couple of weeks and as luck would have it, I have horrendous thrush. This is the result of two courses of antibiotics in quick succession so my poor nether regions are retailating.

Let's hope I regain fanjo flora before the big day.

Shhhh · 09/03/2009 20:23
