Should old tom-ay-toes be forgot and lemon brought to rind - 10/10 thread

For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

I am struggling to keep up atm - being a breeze in and out, non-commital, unreliable flighty kinda gal. It took me farking ages to read the thread this morning and then I found I had run out of time to post anything

100 are you my Mum? She told me to make lists. She was so lovely to me that she made me cry, then dd started crying because I was crying, and it all got a bit emotional. God I'm dreading dd hitting puberty. One or the other of us will forever be in tears. I will have to introduce EPO and VitB complex fairly early on I reckon

FrannyandZooey · 05/01/2009 22:04

i saw a thing today that said "what if there is no pmt and this is just my personality?"

apropos of not much

TigerFeet · 05/01/2009 22:08

what thing was it

I need one

Desperately

[who me emoticon]

Oh dear god, what will it be like when dd is 14 and we synchronise?

Better not get my sister over that week every month, that's all I can say.

FrannyandZooey · 05/01/2009 22:10

i can't remember what thing or even where

it has drifted into my consciousness without me noticing where it came from

it may have been some kind of nick nack in the co-op (most likely possibility)

dooneygirl · 05/01/2009 22:11

What about Fuyu instead of falafel? Like in Fuyu persimmons? Are persimmons known there?

(Goes and hides in the corner for being a newbie and speaking out of turn.)

ahundredtimes · 05/01/2009 23:05

Oh am pleased you are keen today Fra. Today, you have been like ds2's friend X. DS2 likes X because ds2 makes him laugh all the time. DS2 thrilled about it, X especially giggly during maths apparently. I feel a bit like that.

i won't be here tomorrow. I'll be in the cupboard. xxx

ahundredtimes · 05/01/2009 23:06

TF - yes, I am your Mum.

NotanOtter · 05/01/2009 23:24

this thread makes me smile
i loathe pmt and said to dP 'best thing about being pg - on an even keel no wild mood swings' sadly he said 'go on the pill' which i wont so.....doomed to a plate wanging future!

avocado
baby spinach
pumkin seeds
rocket
celeriac
baby plum toms
cucumber
carrot

dooneygirl · 06/01/2009 02:24

Way after everyone else:

juice
grapes
satsuma mandarin
sweet potato (2)
onion
pepper 1/2 red, 1/2 green
garbanzo bean
zucchini
lettuce
red potato

That was easier than I thought. Not the figuring out how to eat that many part, but the actual getting me to eat them part. I will be eating a lot of sweet potatoes, because I got a 10 pound box for $2.

SuperBunny · 06/01/2009 03:33

LOL @ Franny's dinner party. I'm sure in a few years, everyone will find it highly amusing.

I think we should have a rule that newcomers must not manage 10 in their first few weeks. It just puts the rest of us to shame. I'm still on about 5 for today and am off to bed in a min (befoore 10, I hope... early night, see?)

Meditation box sounds like a good idea. I had a similar one for a while but at the end, it just contained tea bags and then I used them and it was empty. I misread and thought you had a medication box full of things that mean something to you.

Sorry for the bananito, Franny. Isn't it vile? I suspect yours was karmic payback for the vinegar incident

Dooney, we have persimmons in the UK but I think the Fuyu bit will be lost.

dooneygirl · 06/01/2009 04:49

I was afraid of that. I didn't even know persimmons existed, until MIL showed me a bunch she'd picked. Having seen them, I still don't really know what they are.

I've seen those miracle berries here and there. It is always some suspect looking middle-aged balding man selling them. I never trust the middle-aged balding man, because they all look far too non-trustworthy.

TinyWhiteFeather · 06/01/2009 07:13

Lol at medication box SB, and the Tea-bags...I might put one in just cos you made me smile.

Was letched by a hairy middle aged man yesterday ew-ew-ew. Although am I now middle-aged (39)? But then you can't trust me either!

I have just banged my head at work and cut it and I feel a little sick. And have gone strangely cold, but didn't think I'd hit it hard enough for mild concussion or anything melodramatic like that.

One of my doctors said that there was no such thing as PMT and it was just unresolved issues.
I don't mind being at the whim of my hormones, apart from the really bad days, it makes me feel real, and there is so much you can get away with by blaming them!! Lol .
If you plot a mood chart (downloadable from the net) you can learn to anticipate them and use the highs and lows to your advantage, and know when best to take EPO and the such like.

Oh well, shall go and wander round aimlessly, wondering what I am supposed to be doing until my head clears.

Have A lovely lovely day, and to all stressed veggers, remember, a new day always brings with it new possibilities.....xx

TooTicky · 06/01/2009 07:13

I make a decent rresolution to get to bed early from now on and you all start playing late night larks. I'm not sure I approve.

TooTicky · 06/01/2009 07:14

We posted at the same second Feather

TooTicky · 06/01/2009 07:14

Oh, but I'm sorry about your head

TooTicky · 06/01/2009 07:20

Hope you are resting not falling over [concerned]

TinyWhiteFeather · 06/01/2009 07:30

What the hell is a bananito? And when people mentioned persimmon, I thought they were talking about the house building company. I didn't realise they were a berry

I obviously need to start looking at the exotic fruit counter in Waitrose!

FrannyandZooey · 06/01/2009 09:48

ok i feel the need for a proclamation

NUTS AND SEEDS DO NOT COUNT

if you want to count them in your head you can
if you want to make up stuff to declare on your 10 then you can (yes avi I do mean you)
if you want to eat them then please do so , they are very good for you

BUT YOU CAN NOT LIST THEM AS PART OF YOUR TEN
they are not fruit or vegetables

right

as you were

littlerach · 06/01/2009 11:05

Ah, but can we list them just to feel good and righteous?

Offto make soup now
And eat SEEDS

Sorry Fran.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 06/01/2009 13:12

What about pickled veg (onions, gherkins and such like)? Do they count toward the 10 a day?

I have just made an apple crumble for tonight. I was quite pleased that it would contribute to my 10 a day, but I have also smeared a load of dulche de leche over the apple In my defence I am trying to use up all of the christmas excess stuff in my cupboards.

I'll be having toasted seeds in my salad tonight, it's a shame they won't count

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 06/01/2009 13:18

Me again

What about coconut? I know some of you may be pissing yourselves and shouting 'the clue is in the name', but it somehow doesn't seem like a nut to me. A bit like chickpeas, they're counted as a pulse, not a veg, or are they a bean? Bloody hell, it's a minefield this malarky.

Sunshine78 · 06/01/2009 13:51

Hi have been watching this thread for a while wandering if I should give it ago. Started on the 2nd and have been managing the 10 portions and exercis but have had terrible constipation is this normal and will it pass as body gets used to the extra fruit/veg or am I doing something wrong? Try to drink 8 glasses of water a day also.

Please help as my stomach is getting very bloated and uncomfortable.

TinyWhiteFeather · 06/01/2009 14:59
