Had a nasty reaction to deep heat, not sure if I need to go to a&e or GP’s

It’s basically burnt my fingers, I was putting it on DH’s back for him and it suddenly felt like my fingers were burning. I don’t know if it’s an allergic reaction or a burn. DH is fine. I’ve never used it before.

This is in the leaflet, I should have read it first, just didn’t think. Lesson definitely learned.

It’s a bit less sore this morning which I’m taking as a good sign. I must admit a small part of me is glad I didn’t have to go to work this morning.

Oh my! I would definitely also react to it! I’ve learnt something from this thread. Glad you got seen to OP, hopefully on the mend now.

OMG that's terrifying.
We've used it for years, but we're not allergic to NSAIDs.

I hope your hands get better soon.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 21/11/2024 19:49

Thank goodness it was you rubbing it in someone else and not someone rubbing it all over you back! Your hands looks so sore and you will have to be really careful to keep them clean. I’m glad you have been signed off as there is no way you could work with mitten bandages.

Hope tomorrows appointment goes well,

Thank you, luckily it was only one hand and like you said I didn’t rub any on myself!

That is awful!

Hope you are seen soon!

We always used to use a Ralgex stick.

I've touched my lip before after washing my hands after cutting up chillies & that was bad enough!

Bet you had a great pout though lol

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 22/11/2024 18:39

How did your appointment go today?

Good thank you, they said it’s healing well, hurts when they change it and still sore but going the right way. They said I can see the nurses at my GP’s now to get it dressed so that’s better.

ouch. definitely glad you're getting it looked at.
as for your partners back, I would recommend the roll on over the cream. I find it works better (and it's not really SPICY like the other products, more herbal, but it really warms up on the skin, and gets in further. it's like using a hot water bottle)
so he may find it more effective than the cream, as I do by a long way, but also, if he needs it applied in areas he can't easily reach, you can help him put it on without getting any on your skin, as it's in a roll on, like a deodorant. (and the ingredients are different, so you might not react to that one, but I'd not be keen to check)
I would definitely not risk getting the cream on your skin again. that's a nasty reaction.

Even with the roll on, I think OP needs to wear disposable gloves.

If we saw that in the ER, we'd class that as second degree burns.

@Yourinmyspot Have your DH change the sheets and wash the ones he slept in twice. Ditto pillowcases and any blanket if it even got near it, once.

I hope the medicine is still keeping the pain from being overwhelming. I was seriously burned once and nothing, but shingles ever got close to being as severe. Not even two children being birthed.

This was my leg after using Deep Heat spray a few years ago. This was after an A&E visit where several blisters were burst

I am so sorry you had that happen! It looks so painful! I hope you healed without any scarring. Being burned sucks.

Mumsnet {{HUGS}} for you and @Yourinmyspot .

Yourinmyspot · 20/11/2024 20:48

That looks horrendous and very sore, I hope you recovered okay.

I did, with thankfully little scarring. Will never use deep heat again though...

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 20/11/2024 21:54

Bloody hell, that’s it I’m getting rid of it all. Never thought it did much good anyway. Hope you recovered fully.

I did thankyou x

I’ve been to have it dressed at my GP’s today, a smaller bandage now. Not as sore as it was and is looking a bit better. Hope to be bandage free and back at work next week. Will not be going near Deep Heat or anything similar in any way or form ever again.

I'm glad the pain has lessened and you're on the mend. It must've been a very difficult and painful week for you.

Singleandproud · 26/11/2024 14:56

I'm glad you are on the mend.

Do you know what exactly caused the reaction?

Obviously deep heat isnt likely to be given to you whilst unconscious like penicillin or similar but if the ingredients is in other things it might be worth carrying some form of warning or adding it to information held at work etc to avoid further issues. I'd probably avoid food with capsicum etc if it was that.

Plastictrees · 26/11/2024 16:58

I don’t blame you! Glad you’re on the mend. It must be so annoying having your hand out of action too. It’ll be so liberating once the bandages are off!

She’s allergic to ibuprofen and the leaflet inside the packet said not to use if allergic to NSAIDS

Singleandproud · 26/11/2024 18:29

@ChristmasisinManchester AHH so she is, I'd forgotten those earlier posts.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 03/12/2024 20:26

A lot better thanks, still bandaged up but hopefully not for much longer. Seeing the nurse again on Friday and hope to be back at work next week. It’s not really painful anymore just slightly sore and itchy!

Yourinmyspot · 15/12/2024 14:11

My hand is a lot better now, two fingers with no bandages now. I’m going back to work finally tomorrow only for four days as the school breaks up on Thursday.

So glad it has healed so well but is no one taught how to dress wounds anymore? All the dressings I have seen recently look they have been done by a four year old.

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 15/12/2024 17:12

That still looks so sore! Hope work goes well this week.
