Had a nasty reaction to deep heat, not sure if I need to go to a&e or GP’s

It’s basically burnt my fingers, I was putting it on DH’s back for him and it suddenly felt like my fingers were burning. I don’t know if it’s an allergic reaction or a burn. DH is fine. I’ve never used it before.

Definitely not a mild reaction! Look like nasty blisters. Ouch. Could you call 111 in the meantime, if you have a burns kit you could use in the meantime.

Hoppinggreen · 19/11/2024 14:41

Bloody Hell, I thought you were being dramatic before I saw the photo!
You poor thing, hope the GP helps and you get some pain relief asap

DecayingRelic · 19/11/2024 14:43

I would probably have gone to Minor Injuries Unit with that tbh, but then my GPs are not that good, they only do telephone appointments in 3 week's time

MabelMaybe · 19/11/2024 14:43

I'm glad you've got a same day GP appointment @Yourinmyspot . Do take the deep heat with you. Have a think about what you did just before you put the cream on DH, in case the burn was caused by a reaction of 2 products on your skin at the same time.

CasuirDubh · 19/11/2024 14:46

Oh you poor thing. This happened to me before with the Russian version of Deep Heat. I assumed it was something mad in the Russian one but obviously the European version can do the same.

I hope you get seen soon. Looks so painful 😢

bloodredfeaturewall · 19/11/2024 14:51

ouch!

take the packet with you.
and phone charger/power bank and a snack as gp might send you off to a&e for wound care.

Baguettesandcheeseforever · 19/11/2024 14:59

Oof! That looks nasty OP. Hope the doctor can do something to help you.

Okayornot · 19/11/2024 15:06

I honestly wouldn't bother with the GP for that and would go straight to A&E. The NHS advice is A&E for all chemical burns, and also for all burns on hands.

hazelnutlatte · 19/11/2024 15:08

I suspect the GP will send you on to a&e or minor injuries, that looks like a significant burn and will need to be dressed by someone who knows what they are doing!

Sparxdislike · 19/11/2024 15:10

I wouldn't wait. Go to minor injuries or a & e so it can get dressed. Hope it's ok.

Hoppinggreen · 19/11/2024 15:19

It also need to be reported to the manufacturer.
GP may do it but as its over the counter not prescription you may need to, there should be a contact on the tube

AnneShirleysNewDress · 19/11/2024 15:22

That looks really sore. Glad your being seen OP.

BeMintBee · 19/11/2024 15:25

Gosh you poor thing that’s really sore looking. I would be inclined to go to a&e rather than wait to see the doctor.

did the reaction start as soon as you were rubbing it in or did you wash your hands afterwards? Wondering is it’s a reaction to the deep heat and mix of hand soap? Although surely you should be able to wash your hands after using it.

hope it’s sorted soon I’m guessing that’s going to be sore for a couple of days.

Vax · 19/11/2024 15:32

That's the problem with asking on here. Everyone is like, oh you won't be burnt etc.

Then you put a photo on where you clearly have some type of chemical burn.

I would go to A&E and get that dressed to avoid infection.

Balloonhearts · 19/11/2024 15:39

Wow. Is your DH OK? It's definitely not supposed to do that and might be contaminated!

If he is OK then I would take careful note of the active ingredient and avoid it in future as you look to have quite the reaction to it. Hands are quite hardy, imagine if you'd used it on yourself.

I'm another one who thought you were just being dramatic, the picture stopped me mid eye roll! I was like Ffs it's deep heat, not acid. How badly could it really burn...HOLY SHIT!

I think that's an A&E job honestly and take the tube with you. Until you get there, I would rinse it very thoroughly and I'd probably slather it in savlon to prevent infection but no idea if that's the right thing to do?

Edited

I think it’s a rare but possible extreme reaction to the deep heat rather than contamination. It’s listed as one of those rare potential side effects that we all probably don’t read as we wouldn’t dare use any medication otherwise!

have never used it myself and probably never will having seen the OP’s picture

Conqueeftador · 19/11/2024 15:42

This is an A&E job, not a gp one op. As per NHS website you have a chemical burn that is on your hands. Either of these mean A&E is most appropriate.

”More serious burns require professional medical attention.
You should go to a hospital A&E department for:

  • all chemical and electrical burns
  • large or deep burns – any burn bigger than the injured person's hand
  • burns that cause white or charred skin – any size
  • burns on the face, neck, hands, feet, any joints or genitals”

I am Salicylate Intolerant, only realised late on when a medication ramped up the intolerance into a severe reaction. I can't apply Deep Heat and the intolerance is from a variety of substances and build up from foods. Maybe the issue here https://www.verywellhealth.com/salicylate-allergy-5425616

Understanding a Salicylate Allergy

Since salicylates are in many foods, beauty products, and medications, it’s a difficult allergy to navigate. Read on for advice here.

Most likely if the DH is fine. I don't use it as I hate the smell but it's put me off too! Always do a patch test people.

MabelMaybe · 19/11/2024 15:45

@Balloonhearts definitely no savlon. Wrap the burned hand in cling film to prevent infection and get it to the hospital. If you put savlon on, they'll have to get it off before they can dress the burn.

Error404pagenotfound · 19/11/2024 15:46

Ouch! I really hope you’ve gone to A&E by now, that definitely looks like a chemical burn and needs proper treatment.

EtonMessy · 19/11/2024 15:47

Definitely needs proper attention at A& E or Burns Unit which you will probably be referred on to. You have to be really careful with hand burns. Hope you get it sorted , looks so painful.

Sparklfairy · 19/11/2024 15:47

I'm not sure wrapping in clingfilm is wise Confused

There was an old prank show with Ben Hanlin, and he took Joe Swash for a 'new' treatment at a spa. Joe got slathered in multiple tubes of deep heat and wrapped in clingfilm. The plastic acted as an insulator and made the effect far worse and by the end Joe was a panicking mess. No burns or allergic reaction but I'm thinking trapping the chemical closer to your skin using clingfilm that isn't breathable probably isn't going to help?

Forget the GP. Burns on the hand need to be seen in A&E. I’d go now before the after work rush.

whatisforteamum · 19/11/2024 15:50

Poor you hope you get it sorted.
