Had a nasty reaction to deep heat, not sure if I need to go to a&e or GP’s

It’s basically burnt my fingers, I was putting it on DH’s back for him and it suddenly felt like my fingers were burning. I don’t know if it’s an allergic reaction or a burn. DH is fine. I’ve never used it before.

I am Salicylate Intolerant, only realised late on when a medication ramped up the intolerance into a severe reaction. I can't apply Deep Heat and the intolerance is from a variety of substances and build up from foods. Maybe the issue here https://www.verywellhealth.com/salicylate-allergy-5425616

Interesting, so am I! Maybe I’ll avoid deep heat…

Also this is a really good example of why nobody on mumsnet should try and armchair diagnose, based on anything really, but particularly not based on what an OP is writing.

Maddy70 · 19/11/2024 15:53

I react too. Ice pack and anti histamines are your friend

Agreed.

OP I would go straight to A&E.

Completely agreed, that photo painted a much clearer picture.

rollerround · 19/11/2024 15:57

A&E immediately. Don't wait, go.

OrlandointheWilderness · 19/11/2024 16:00

Wow that looks sore. A&E.

Have you seen the photo? It’s going to take more than an ice pack and a Piriton to sort that out!

Soubriquet · 19/11/2024 16:04

Ouch that looks nasty. I would have gone to A&E with that

Allthehorsesintheworld · 19/11/2024 16:06

Wow that is way more than irritation. Wrap a clean tea towel around your hand and go to A&E. take the tube of Deep heat with you.
Keep the tube though as you’ll have to talk to the manufacturers in case there’s a contaminated batch.

DH is still fine, I’m currently running it under cold water, I phoned the GP’s and they have said they will see me, got an appointment in a couple of hours. Stings like a ***

Ouch, that looks painful. 20 minutes under cool running water is recommended for burns. Cover with cling film for now, take paracetamol and/or ibuprofen (if no allergies etc.) for comfort.

You will need dressings, a tetanus booster if not up to date, & likely referral to/advice from your local burns unit.

This could be something to do with it, I’m allergic to ibuprofen and diclofenac my face swells if I take them. It never crossed my mind. I’m on my way to a&e I phoned the doctor back before my appointment and explained in more detail and they said it was probably best I go there instead.

That's like the initial reaction I had, on my face (it was awful) and I went initially to the GP but they hadn't a clue, as no dermatology specialist knowledge in the practice. They suggested all sorts but said it should clear, but the next morning it was far worse, so we to A&E and they dragged me straight in, as said a severe reaction! That's when I got referred to an allergy specialist, who diagnosed Salicylate Intolerance (I am allergic to Aspirin, so makes sense), but no matter what we say, always get checked out and as it is localised looks like something you touched is the issue, but you need to get to what and make sure it doesn't become infected. I can't handle Deep Heat and even gloves don't help. Hopefully sorted soon.

Survivingnotthriving24 · 19/11/2024 16:15

I think the GP is going to be out of their depth with that, have you sent them the photo? I think A&E is more appropriate here.

I would, alongside a few other topical ointments. I had no idea that it was in so many drugs, cosmetics, foods....

ChristmasisinManchester · 19/11/2024 16:21

Wow glad you are going to A&E, burns are nasty and the hands are important!

Okayornot · 19/11/2024 16:25

Glad to hear it OP.

MabelMaybe · 19/11/2024 16:25

@Sparklfairy cling film is recommended for burns in first aid courses, but only after you've run a burn under the tap for 20 minutes, so it removes the heat you mention.

diddl · 19/11/2024 16:25

That is awful!

Hope you are seen soon!

We always used to use a Ralgex stick.

I've touched my lip before after washing my hands after cutting up chillies & that was bad enough!

Isobel201 · 19/11/2024 16:29

geeze, I've used deep heat regularly and its never done anything like that.

whatthedickens5 · 19/11/2024 16:31

Oh my goodness. You poor thing. That's looks like a proper chemical burn and must be so painful. Wishing you well and hope it recover soon. X

Yourinmyspot · 19/11/2024 14:23

It’s got worse now and has taken the skin off my fingers I think I need to see someone.

Holy moly, Op that’s really bad.
I use deep heat a lot and have never seen anything like that.

DonningMyHardHat · 19/11/2024 16:37

Fucking hell OP! I hope A&E are able to sort you out quickly, that looks horrific!

OchAyeTheN00 · 19/11/2024 16:39

My god OP. Thank goodness you’re going to A&E.
