Is there a strange virus going around?

This is a really odd one!
started on Friday with a very sudden sore throat. Low grade fever overnight, woke to awful muscle pains, neck ache and a general feeling of low level unwell.
Saturday felt off with a running nose and aches and pains. Kept feeling warm and waves of nausea. Overnight into Sunday stomach pains started with diarrhoea and nausea, snotty nose, shivery, headache.
Symptoms are coming and going, feel a bit better one minute then headachey and off the next. Every time I eat I get stomach cramps and loose stool. Not positive for Covid (old tests tho).

It’s the stomach issues that are unusual, it’s like a low level flu bug but with a bad stomach too.

Anyone else have this?

It's a relief to know people are actually bothering to test. So many people on MN are saying no one tests anymore, Covid is nothing,it's just a little cold.

Still feeling pretty rubbish today 🙁. Are people going into work or trying to rest up?

Got to work

Giraff3 · 06/11/2024 14:44

I took 2 x days off when i was at my roughest. Then i tested positive, but logged on home for 1 day after two days off and then back in office. Everyone is coughing and sneezing in the office. So i imagine thats why i caught it in work. Breeding ground. Glad i caught the new strain now instead of at xmas. Ive had it 4 x times since 2020.

I can't afford not to work - self-employed. But I work alone (with animals) so I'm not really a risk to anyone.

Mine came on suddenly, cold, shivers and stomach cramps with diarrhoea.

I went to bed, slept for 3 hours, got up, ate porridge and then went back to bed.

Next day went to work (home worker) and felt like a cold 😩

Felt tired on and off all week.

But intense phase stopped after 8 hours.

dinkydoodah · 08/11/2024 11:03

I’m glad I am not alone and really feel all your pains!
Ive had symptoms for about 2 weeks now. Started gradually with just tiredness and slight loss of appetite. Then I felt really hot for a couple of days before crushing fatigue set in alongside mild breathlessness. After a couple of days I thought I was getting better and now it’s hit hard with a different set of symptoms.

Banging headache, breathless, achey, shaky, weak and now excruciating sinus pain which is the worst I’ve ever felt.
Saw pharmacist 4 days ago. Suspected virus which has set off sinusitis. Advised rest and steam inhalation.
3 days later and pain is much worse. Stabbing around eye, cheek and bridge of nose. Stomach upset from taking back to back pain relief which is not effective.
Went back to pharmacy and they’ve now given me antibiotics ( phenoxymethylpenicillen) as my temperature was high - as was my blood pressure which is a first for me! Started the antibiotics last night so I’m praying they work.
I’ve suffered with sinusitis before but never had pain like this. Have periods of manageable pain but then it gets worse again. Nothing ever comes out of my nose as everything is completely dry and far up in sinuses.
Sympathy with everyone suffering this in whatever form. It is bloomin’ awful

coffeesaveslives · 08/11/2024 11:36

Same with me @everythingisgoingup - I've finally had some decent sleep and feel much better (a week later 😫) but I still have a cough and a runny nose 🙈

shewolfmum · 08/11/2024 23:03

Dinky look up neti pot...it saved me. Use boiled water with salt in it ...

Thanks for the advice. I’m going to try this.

I had sinus surgery about 15 years ago to correct a deviated septum and the post surgery splints left a hole in my septum. This has got bigger over time so I’ve always been put off a neti pot as I thought the flow wouldn’t work properly.
I am, however willing to try anything at this point. 🙏

Except I've also done 3 tests and all negative
If it is Covid I need it to show up as I can have antivirals Sad
Brand new tests as well

I worked in healthcare during Covid. In the 2 first years where testing was regular I did lateral flows weekly or daily depending on outbreaks/ symptoms. Must have done hundreds! Never once had a positive.

Tested 3 times positive from lab tests which were done weekly or on request.

So to summarise the lateral flows just don’t work for everyone.

This was me almost exactly including the trips to the pharmacist and the antibiotics.

A few folks have suggested a neti pot. I got one mostly as I felt so desperate that I’d try anything at that point. But really I wish I’d had one years ago as it did provide some relief. I also googled yoga for sinuses and I did the neti pot followed by a few yoga poses, mostly child’s pose. I had to put a towel under my face as there was so much dripping out of my nose

I’ve had sinusitis before but this time was off the scale.

To get some sleep I’d recommend liquid Night Nurse as that saved my sanity.

🙏

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 09/11/2024 11:18

Oh and I’m quite sure that the second phase of my symptoms was Covid even though tests were negative. I say that based on a few colleagues with similar symptoms who did test positive. Someone did suggest that swabbing throat may be better for this variant.

I’m at the 6 week point and still have a cough and post nasal drip but it’s manageable now.

dinkydoodah · 09/11/2024 11:20

PortiaWithNoBreaks
thank you so much for your kind reply.

I am willing to try anything right now. I never have anything coming out of my nose as it so blocked further up and I’m never sure water can reach BUT even a slight improvement would be welcome.

Off to Google Neti pot 🙏

Boots sleepeaze has defo helped a restful night and it's an antihistamine so helps the cough too.

Totallybannanas · 09/11/2024 12:17

I've had a awful virus, started with sneezing, sore throat and then coughing. Aching and hurting from the chest up, even my eyes hurt. Fatigued and breathless, nausea and upset tummy. I have had a very wet productive cough, only just easing after 4 week.
Has anyone been left with breathlessness? It's not all the time but now and then my back hurts and chest feels heavy and I find it hard to catch my breath. tmi but I'm sure is also messed with my menstrual cycle, increased vaginal discharge and spotting. I feel like I need to go to the doctor's for a MOT as just feel broken from it.

Betty91 · 09/11/2024 13:23

I got ill at the end of September and only just started feeling better within last couple of days. I did 3 negative covid tests. Symptoms were coughing relentlessly - woken in night already coughing and would go on and on. Shivery and feverish and fatigue - loss of appetite and unable to face doing anything. I'm now left with a painful back and ribs from coughing so much - bad enough to make getting out of bed tricky - and I can't bend to put socks on etc.

I don't think I was drinking enough and underestimated that my temperature was dehydrating me. I had to order tena pads as the nighttime coughing fits were so severe I'd often not make to loo in time. If you've got this one I really feel you - rest as much as possible as I think I tried to do too much in the early stages of getting ill. I'm not sure if any of the over the counter cough stuff helped at all but I glugged it down anyway. Get well soon - it will pass - it's just a long boring one.

Yes - I don't know if my period just dramatically stopped or if it was this virus but I was due on and it hasn't happened. I am in the age range of it stopping but it coincided with this illness too. I've also been left with breathlessness - deep breathing hurts my ribs but I also feel like I'm just breathing using the top of my lungs if that makes sense? Very shallow breathing. I tried walking yesterday and I was exhausted very quickly.

I'm exactly at that age too, and experiencing similar with the breathing. I almost feel like I'm having a panic attack as chest gets the heavy and I can't get a deep breath. Wondering whether too late to go to the doctor's, I definitely don't feel right even though I am much better. Still have a we cough now and then too.
@Betty91 I also had to wear a wear pad 😭

Have you had a covid vaccine recently? When I was vaccinated a few years ago my period became completely irregular for about nine months. I just assumed I’d entered peri, but it went back to normal and later I discovered other people had the same reaction to it.

Totallybannanas · 09/11/2024 15:57

I haven't had an vaccination, since the first 2 which did mess with my cycle.

Cookie2204 · 10/11/2024 19:41

hi, how long does this god awful virus last ! Tested for Covid negative! First day was a week ago today and I thought my head was guna pop off with head aches… then fever, sweating , runny nose blocked nose thought I was getting a tad better 5 days in then started feeling so sick 😷 and Gita tender belly and iv thrown up twice today I can’t go on much longer like this it’s getting me down iv cried for 7 days like a big baby! But I can’t get anything done and I miss taking the kids out and having fun :( x

shewolfmum · 10/11/2024 23:08

I have felt breathless. Sort of shallow breathing. I am retraining myself to breath low and slow. Pop hands on side ribs at bottom and breath in to expand ribs a d out to contract them. Make breath slow...count equal inhale and exhale. Each day try to make a tiny bit longer. You can also do small breath holds on exhale when walking to increase breathlessness and decrease sensitivity to co2 which seems to be a biproduct of this delight of a bug...

shewolfmum · 10/11/2024 23:09

Also, my periods completely stopped after my first round of original covid back in the day. Never had Another. I am now 50 and had no real signs of peri...it seems to real go for me!

ArabellaScott · 11/11/2024 06:58

Glad I've found this thread. On about day 10 and still rough. Feverish, shaking, shivering, aching, nauseous, can't eat. Spent a week in bed and the kids are also off with it. Paracetamol is helping with the fevers but I've very much had enough now. No respiratory symptoms bar a wee sniffle and sore ears.
Sorry to hear everyone else is unwell.

ArabellaScott · 11/11/2024 07:04

I'm told Norovirus is going around, but in my experience that's violent and brief.

This feels more like a weird gastric flu.
