For anyone who wants a boost to their general health. The suggested goals are:

EAT 10 PORTIONS OF FRUIT AND VEGETABLES EVERY DAY - if you don't usually eat much fruit and veg I would build up gradually or you could upset your digestion.

DO (AT LEAST) 10 MINUTES OF EXERCISE EVERY DAY - can be yoga, stretching or something more energetic. The plan is that the idea of doing 10 minutes is not too daunting, and having started you may well find you want to do more.

There are no restrictions on what you eat so long as you get your 10 fruit and veg as well. The focus is not on weight loss but on improving our energy levels and hopefully our general mood and well-being. Sign up below and post here to tell us how you're getting on and how you are feeling.

Basic guidance on what constitutes a portion of fruit and veg here and you can download more detailed information by following the link at the very bottom of the page

is it all machines or free weights?

be vv careful ur i want to come with you and show you!

have you really never been before? is there an official gym bum hanging about who can tell you how to use things?

zippitippitoes · 11/04/2008 22:39

ds and plumber mate have gone
right it is 100 quid for them to put in new basdin and tap and new bath taps

bargain do u think

obviously not the actual taps and sink

UnderRated · 11/04/2008 22:40

No, no official gym person. The weights is a machine, with various activities you can do - things to pull or lift up etc.

I wish someone would come with me

UnderRated · 11/04/2008 22:42

They charged you, zippi? I assumed it was a favour. Probably a lot cheaper than getting someone else to do it though.

TooTicky · 11/04/2008 22:43

I had my nose pressed briefly to the yurt window this morning but couldn't post because ds1 managed to pour water into the keyboard last night.
Wonder if the new keyboard will improve my typing? I have had to slow down a bit.

Boco - do tell one of us.

Fmf - the second one. I find the pink circles rather unsettling.
Do you do rainbows? I have two items of rainbow striped knitwear which satisfy my colour cravings.

Avi - glad you had a good birthday.

Franny - glad ds had a nice birthday. Lovely pics.

Wombling - hope ds feels better soon.

zippitippitoes · 11/04/2008 22:44

oh well yes i expected to pay

for heavens sake i have to pay ds for coming rounbd for dinner

TooTicky · 11/04/2008 22:47

Pizza for lunch (tomato, mushroom, sweetcorn, garlic) probably 2

Huuuuge plate of salad for dinner - red cabbage, carrot, apple, tomato, cucumber, avocado, sprouted lentils/beans. And tofu. Can I count tofu? It is a bean....
orange juice

Anyway, total of 8 or 9 probably, maybe 10?
Certainly felt v. good and awake and alive after salad

UnderRated · 11/04/2008 22:47

Oh dear zippi

Hello Toots

zippitippitoes · 11/04/2008 22:49

toot sounds good

and how do you manage to be so disciplined about posting you are only here for like 30 mins a day

TooTicky · 11/04/2008 22:49

Hello UR

TooTicky · 11/04/2008 22:51

Who, me? Dp uses puter for work and dcs also like to monopolise it. Now, if everybody was out it would be a different matter
Although I'm quite good at not actally turning it on, once it is on it sucks me in.

stuffitllama · 11/04/2008 23:03

hello wide awake tooticky

was just ousted by dh, am am being encouraged to retire (i am later than you lot)

use tomorrow as a tester ur and put them on the lowest weight or even the bar only while you make sure you're getting the movement right (there are usually diagrams)

the leg one that I'm talking about is sitting down and either pushing weights together or pushing them apart (thighs are meant to evaporate)

one back machine is sitting and pulling down on a bar which pulls up weights

the bum one is quite hard i think even with just bar, to get the movement right ..it seems too easy and light, so you add a bar and then boom you pull something

anyway my other tip is count how many you're doing rather than "5 mins on this" etc
the idea is to gradually increase the number and increase the weights so you get a bit of a boost from doing more and heavier even before it shows

and lunges with weights are unbelievably effective at reducing large arses .. you can do lunges just with a bar to keep you straight and balanced

but I'm very worried.. please don't injure yourself.. you should find someone to go with or take it very gently at first

then i want to say HAVE FUN but it doesn't really go, does it

stuffitllama · 11/04/2008 23:17

flip zippi I have had an unusually long lovely day doing what i like on here and you have made me rofl at every turn

UnderRated · 12/04/2008 03:17

I WENT TO THE GYM

I forgot to stretch, I'm sure I'll regret that in the morning, and was only there for 30 mins or so, but I did it! The weight machine doesn't have the thigh minimiser bit where you squeeze things together but I did:

Bench Press
Bicep curl
Tricep Extension
Leg Extension
Leg curl
Shoulder press
And something else, I think.

15 - 20 repetitions of each on the lowest or second setting.

Then a brisk walk on the treadmill for 10 mins.

Was just playing really. I am now reading about what I should have done so that I can do something a bit more sensible next time and have A Plan. Thank you for all your advice, stuffit & zippi. It was actually quite good fun

UnderRated · 12/04/2008 03:19

F&V: raisins, almost 3 bananas, most of an apple, roasted red pepper, peas, broccoli. 8

zippitippitoes · 12/04/2008 03:26

UR

good for you good fun

and if it's there you might as well use it

x

UnderRated · 12/04/2008 03:40

Zippi, why are you up? Are you ok?

Tatties · 12/04/2008 08:41

Morning!

FMF I think the tops are definitely you; I LOVE the green one
UR good for you going to the gym - it makes you feel great when you get into it (I have cancelled my membership )
MrsC what did you think of Frida? I discovered her in my teens and have been fascinated by her life and work.
Franny at ds ironing baby clothes

Hope everyone has a good weekend

FrannyandZooey · 12/04/2008 08:50

UR I think stretching is overrated - it's a bit of a thorny issue whether it actually helps or not
what i would do is warm up with the treadmill then do say 10 mins cardio on whatever thing you fancy - see if you can find a programme where you have to try to improve eg go a set distance in a faster time, or try to go up levels of intensity over the weeks or something (obv this depends on the machines you have)
then alternate weights and cardio eg do one circuit of the weights and then do your second circuit after your next lot of cardio
with the weights you should be aiming to do between 8 and 16 at the heaviest weight you can manage (work up gradually while getting used to this)
if you cannot do 8 repetitions on a certain weight then go down a weight
if you can do 16 then go up a weight

so do warm up, cardio, 1 set of weights, cardio, second set of weights (repeating what you did before), more cardio if you haven't fallen over

or split them up a bit eg cardio, half the weights, cardio, second set of those weights, cardio, do rest of weights, cardio, second set of those weights

this second one in particular will keep your heart rate up the whole time you are there and you may be able to get more done in a shorter time, as you can do quick bursts of cardio and put in more effort

oh and YES excellent UR for shaking your thing!

sounds like you did masses
interesting what franny said about stretching, i like stretching as it makes me feel thinner

how are you feeling now?

zippitippitoes · 12/04/2008 09:44

i dont do stretching

i am tired this am i have had to re assign the 1st jan to today or even possibly tomorrow

FrannyandZooey · 12/04/2008 09:52

don't know if this helps regards stretching

I never stretch when exercising - nor does dp - oh except at work where I am expected to do it as part of the warm up with the children

Stuffit - can I just clarify, ds excema is not weepy, I meant he is leaky, ie watery eyes, runny nose, his excema is red and sore but not weeping. That would be awful.

Tatties - I didn't watch it in the end, there was a dreadful docu about Kirsty MacColl's death that I got sucked into and then it was late. I will try to see it tonight.

A week of no drinking, lots of brown rice, little crab with the evening meal and nothing but fruit after 6pm and I have PUT ON ONE EFFING POUND! How is that fair? How have I not lost any? Ggrrrr.
